IN THE COMPANY OF ANGELS: A CALL TO WORSHIP - CAEDMON'S CALL (2001)
by Melissa Miles
"But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the
living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful
assembly..." - Hebrews 12:22 [NIV]
We were made to praise our maker. It is our highest calling. Therefore the
enemy tries his hardest to keep us from it. In recent days, he has succeeded
in pulling our focus off of our Lord and placing it on our fears and woes.
Released just 18 days after the infamous September 11th attacks, Caedmon's
call newest album In the Company of Angels: A Call to Worship draws us back
to our ultimate purpose. It calls us to rise above this world, and gaze at
His marvelous light. The need for whole-hearted, God-pleasing praise has
never been more desperate.
It might be said that this album is the "baby" of gifted 18 year-old
Caedmon's member Joshua Moore. Is there anything this boy can't do? He plays
almost every instrument known to man on Angels, wrote two of the songs,
mixed some of the recordings, and even co-produced it. Along with his songs
are ones written by founding Caller Kemper Crabb and a new classic by the
late Rich Mullins. While all of the songs on Angels are fair to good, three
stand out as great.
Opening track "We Delight" wastes no time escorting one into the presence of
God, inviting all to come and thank Him for gifts so undeserved. As one of
Josh Moore's songs, it loudly proclaims "We delight in the law of your
Word/We delight in Your Son who was perfect from birth/We delight in the day
He's returning to earth/Hallelujah!" "Carry Your Love" takes this
thankfulness a bit further. It speaks of outward ways to praise Him --
primarily submitting one's whole self to the Lord's will. It's a sweet song,
telling God of a willingness for anything if it is for His glory. As the
lines say, "We are vessels for breaking/Under your love/We are lead by your
Spirit... Send down your Word/We are eager to hear it/Ready our hearts to
carry Your love." A wonderful twist on the quintessential praise song.
The last track really makes one want to let loose and "Danse." Written by
the Celtic minded Kemper Crabb (thus the medieval-style spelling,) "Danse"
re-tells some of the most basic Biblical stories (Creation, Adam and Jesus)
while admonishing worshipers to "Danse, danse, danse, danse in God's
honor/We must yield all of our steps unto the King... Let His praises ring
throughout the earth." Communing with our loving Father is the most
rewarding thing that people can experience here on earth. A useful tool for
praise, In the Company of Angels lifts listeners into that spirit, often by
borrowing from the early church's liturgy. Lovers of worship and everyone
needing a few peaceful moments with God would do well to answer this call to
worship.
