This week we are all about new artist Taylor Sorenson. We have been
listening to his impressive rock 'n' roll tunes for months now and are
completely hooked. So to celebrate the release of his full-length debut, we
have a review and a "getting to know Taylor" feature on our site. Also,
check out today's new releases, including new music from Sara Groves and the

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST?
Mel Gibson's movie is now the biggest R-rated movie in the history of the
USA. But more than the hype and all the money it is making, Mel Gibson's
movie shows, more accurately than ever shown before on the silver screen,
what Christ went through for us. Our staff take a look at the movie and give
their honest reactions to this amazing film.

THE OVERFLOW - TAYLOR SORENSON (2004)
by Melissa Miles
"1, 2, 3... Ah, won't you come and follow me? Hey won't you come and get
yourself free?" That, my friends, is the hook from Taylor Sorensen's first
single "Follow Me." It's a catchy tune with a 1950's feel to it that causes
you to be-bop a little, even on the 400th listen. It does what a good single
is supposed to do: you want more, and more, and then a little more after
that. In other words, it makes you want to buy the album. Those who heed the
call of "Follow Me" (both lyrically and single-y) will not be disappointed.
Four of the songs on The Overflow ("Love Somebody Else," "Follow Me," "Red
Fone," and "Sanctuary") were released previously on 2002's The Fill EP. For
a review of that project, go here. Let's see… 11-4=7 original songs. While
the truly glowing tracks are contained in this quartet, there are a few gems
that were held back for the LP. "Fly Away" is a laidback guitar tune
perfectly suited for a movie soundtrack (perhaps a driving scene with lots
of tree-cast shadows), "Red Fone" is super-Bono-esque, and "World Keeps on
Spinning" sounds like an excerpt from the Sixpence catalogue. In fact, wait
a minute! Is that...? It is! Leigh Nash singing background on that tune
(bandmate Matt Slocum was an executive producer of The Overflow, and did
some instrumentation on the album as well). Another name-sighting: Tree63's
John Ellis provides some guitar licks on "Gloria 34" and "Sanctuary." That's
quite a group to be backing up a newbie.
Sandwiched between the contributions of these artists lies the heart of
Taylor. Sung with a silken voice, the lyrics are simple but comforting.
"What Love Is" addresses neglect: "Does your mother know your name? / Was
your father ever there? / But you still know what love is. / You still know
how to give." "Upside" speaks of a relationship: "Well I hurt your heart
with my mouth like that / You know I hate it baby / When I love so bad / But
it's your love that loves me at my worst."
King David's Psalms take a big part in "Gloria 34" and "Sing (Or the Rocks
Will Get To)." I wonder who collects David's part of the royalty check?
"I'm gonna show you what I'm talking about, I'm gonna light the shadows of
doubt. Oh, now baby won't you see? Love will set you free, so won't you come
and follow me?" For a first record, The Overflow is incredibly solid. Good
sound, good label, good vocal, good band, good lyrics, good vibe. Good,
good, good. Lead on Taylor, we will follow.

IT'S NEVER ENOUGH - ACE TROUBLESHOOTER
Fans of Tooth & Nail's usual punk sound will definitely like Ace
Troubleshooter. These Minnesota natives deliver the punk, but really fail to
distinguish themselves from the rest of the folks in the genre. Casual punk
fans may want to stick to Relient K and MxPx.
THE LIME CD - DAVID CROWDER BAND
If you just got Illuminate and are screaming for more, the DCB is here to
satisfy your every craving ...with a twist. This large EP, priced at only
$7.99, has 6 unreleased songs recorded live plus two studio tracks: the
instrumental "End of October" as well as a demo cut of "Heaven Came Down".
LIVE IN SAN DIEGO DVD - SWITCHFOOT
These days, live concert DVDs are becoming a dime a dozen. However,
Switchfoot is a stellar live band, bringing rock 'n' roll and crowd
interaction to new heights. This disc captures a short 50-minute performance
by the boys featuring songs from their latest disc, The Beautiful Letdown.
Sadly, though, this DVD suffers from sometimes very poor video quality.
THE OTHER SIDE OF SOMETHING - SARA GROVES
Sara Groves has had a tough couple years since her last disc, All Right
Here. After struggling with her faith, she has come out on "The Other Side
Of Something". On this disc we get the usual stories of life, inspirational
tidbits, and innovative pop. As well as the usual musical brilliance of
producer Nate Sabin, the disc also features Charlie Peacock helping out on
some tracks, including the Jazz-influenced "The Boxer," sure to be an album
favorite.
THE OVERFLOW - TAYLOR SORENSON
See the review above for info on this disc.
REAL LIFE - RJ HELTON
If you watch that American Idol show, you might know who RJ is. After
getting that far, he had record labels knocking down his door. But he chose
a gospel label to make his debut, and gospel this disc surely is.
STAPLE - STAPLE
Hard rock fans will definitely like Staple's Flicker Records debut. After an
independent EP and LP, these guys had radio support even without a label.
Fans of Blindside, Disturbed, and Project 86 should check out this band.
