Here's a review of the great major-label debut of the folk band Caedmon's
Call. It's not the one on the site, but here's another one that's been
written:
CAEDMON'S CALL (1997)
by Josh Shepherd
From the opening bars of "Lead of Love," this inspired major-label debut
never ceases to explore, to relate, to struggle, to reflect—a
seven-member collaboration built on clear perspective and college-kid
intellectualism. The aforementioned opener looks at our journey on the
narrow & straight path, concluding that "I'd rather have wisdom and pain
~ Than be a comfortable old fool." Swelling with surrender and
brokenness, "Close of Autumn" speaks of God's love overcoming bullheaded
anger. Discovering that rebellion and defiance are "Not the Land"
promised me, Derek Webb and the band find that thinking of others first
is the key to peace. Instantly recognizable as Caedmon's signature song,
the following track sees the hollow vapidity of "This World," at the same
time embracing "the least of these ~ who look like criminals to me."
Following suit in trademark eccentric perspective, cut #6 sees life
through the eyes of a "Bus Driver." Shunning temptation and pride,
"Standing Up for Nothing" refuses to retreat from being salt and light.
The album's best example of Caedmon's inherent energy, the cover of Rich
Mullins' "Hope to Carry On joys in God's love that brings riches to the
poverty of our existence. Backed by a psychedelic forfisa organ, "Stupid
Kid" draws on images of immaturity and adolescent fear in describing
Christians' non-engagement with the world. "I Just Don't Want Coffee"
openly shares an internal struggle of mundanely epic proportion, yearning
for love to comfort. The Cd's tenth cut attempts to achieve human
perfection, substance and depth apart from God's grace, only to fall
short and realize it's "Not Enough." Raising questions of justice and
failed expectations, "Center Aisle" shakes the confidence of faith
recounting a life lost to suicide; answers don't come easy, yet
relationship is cherished for resolving conflict and doubt. Featuring
Cliff and Danielle Young in harmony, "Coming Home" commits to moving
forward, while observing that I chain myself to rotting desires in
raising the banner of individual freedom. Defined not by religious
rehearsal or false morality, Caedmon's Call artfully examines burning
questions with percussuion-based mix, and (often) painfully honest
reflection.

AVAILABLE TODAY (on Christian MusicWeb and at your favorite store)
GLAD YOU MADE IT - PARKWAY
Two members of the horrendous Silage have returned to Essential as
Parkway, and they have some pop tunes to bring to you, which aren't too
bad.
THE INDWELLING - TIM LAHAYLE & JERRY B. JENKINS
The latest in the Left Behind series has a lot of drama, but it seems
that they are just drawing it out to make more money off the Christian
public. Nevertheless, some of the best Christian fiction out there.
LISA BEVILL
After four years of no sounds from Lisa Bevill, she's come back with a
more pop/rock sound, a very beautiful voice, and much more to like.
THE PROMISE - PLUSONE
Cashing in on the boy-band phenomenon, PlusOne are the clean-cut,
beautiful pop tunes which are probably a little more uplifting than the
Backstreet Boys and N*Sync.
THIS MYSTERY - NICHOLE NORDEMAN
Piano-playing Nichole crafts a beautiful disc of charming vocals and
uplifting pop. Includes some awesome strings and a duet with Fernando
Ortega. And it happens to be the PICK OF THE WEEK.
SMASH HITS - ALL STAR UNITED
After two albums, why a "Greatest Hits" album, you ask? Well, because
Essential is getting rid of them (and Plumb too), and so they add a
couple songs. Only neccessary for those who have never heard ASU or just
love them to death.
WAKE UP SCREAMING - SLICK SHOES
If you like MxPx, chances are you like Slick Shoes too. Wake Up
Screaming features more upfront lyrics and 90's punk.
