Here's a great review of the newest in the Revival Generation
series. This disc is all live from england, just like the first
Revival Generation release.
LIVE & UNRESERVED - VARIOUS (2000)
by Josh Shepherd
Immaculately written and furiously delivered, Live & Unreserved, a
combined recording of the re:vive and Soul Survivor festivals,
continues in Revival Generation's rigorous, hale vein of praise.
From the riant attitude of the record, the atmosphere at both rallies
sounds more Mardi Gras than stuffy conference--only the pleasure is
not fleshly and false, but spiritual and true. Commencing the
celebration is Paul Oakley, whose opener "Joy" shines with a
strengthful chorus and the "woo-a, woo-a" call of the crowd. The
anthem "I Have Come to Love You" witnesses the Changer of lives
dedicating us to "speak about His fame." With a ska-like eighth-note
basis, "I Fix My Eyes on You" fades out premorsely at just two and a
half minutes, breaking into a spontaneous guitar progression of
prophetic longing that's the project's finest moment. The next three
tracks achieve a unique balance on the acoustic/electric tightrope,
with "We Bow Down at Your Throne" finding the purest, deepest
sanctum of God's presence. It's interesting to note that this is the
first RG release without a delirious? song, denoting that this
indirect offshoot of the early 90s' Cutting Edge events has come into
its own. Incomparable songwriter Matt Redman steps on the stage
with "Thank You for the Blood," a winning repetition goading
listeners to new realms of renewal in its quick-fire chorus: "We sing
of all You've won for us ~ Done for us ~ Paid for us." Leader Martin
Layzell conveys "You Opened Up My Eyes" in his inclement, curt
single, dispelling a sense of marvel at Jesus' mercy. Redman
verses "O Sacred King," his previous song from Lovely Noise whose
live treatment here possesses more emprise and unbroken poignancy
than even the Father's Song mix. The final track beholds an empty
tomb and the very face of mercy, cutting out on the truly fervent
multitude's encore of "Jesus, keep me near the cross." The sweat,
screams, and smashing music of Britain's largest worship gatherings
are given new vitality on Live & Unreserved, a gritty, intemperate
collection of weariless, vertically-directed elation.
