This week we have a review of a recent concert featuring delirious?
and SONICFLOOd, and delirious? features a bit of their upcoming
album, GLO.
DELIRIOUS? AND SONICFLOOd
SIX FLAGS OVER TEXAS ~ JULY 20, 2000
by Josh Shepherd
After a day of being twisted, looped, and corkscrewed by the Six
Flags coasters, fans' appetite for intensity was insatiable as nearly
10,000 jostled to find their seats for the coming experience. The
coupling of delirious? with ultra-overdubbed group SONICFLOOd proved
workable, focusing the crowd's eyes on One higher than the stage. As
SONICFLOOd led through standards like "Lord, I Lift Your Name on
High" and "Open the Eyes," there was ample room for improving both
song selection and the tightness of their sound. Finer selections of
the SF set included "Holy Moment," from Matt Redman's Father's Song
project, and "Lord of the Dance" by Kevin Prosch, to be on the
group's next CD, SONICPRAISe. Most ignored their musicianship and
cherished the band's heavenward focus. Then, the main event.
Stu G., Stew, Tim, and Jon emerged first, with Garrard hammering out
a few choice chords before Martin grabbed a mic, and they proceeded
to the potent prelusion of "Bliss," their shaky, not-backing-down
thesis. Fans, meanwhile, lamented at the park's new security policy:
everyone in a seat, no hoarding the front. Still, all were quickly
caught up in "Louder than the Radio," which cut to the d: song to end
all songs "Did You Feel?," saturated with jubilee and uttered with
conviction by the 9,000+ participants. Marking the third time in
three Dallas-area concerts, "Dance in the River"--a spur-of-the-
moment, nonstop tune--again infringed on habitual worship structure;
an ample, embellished version of "Not Ashamed" proved that Cutting
Edge spirit and Mezzamorphis magnitude can be concurrent (exist
together). "Our new album Glo stands for the first three letters of
the word `glorious,'" said Martin, introducing the first U.S.
performance of "My Glorious." "We just wanted to make again a record
about the glory." Slashing chords entangled with flexible vocals
clad this lofty yet meek construction in a stance of victory: "And
all will say, my Glorious." If this wrenching heartcry is only a
specimen of Glo, get ready for an unearthly assault October 10.
"Follow" followed, a bounding, mirthful singalong that gave an
external glimpse of the throng's internal madcap furor; once Martin
leaped off stage to join the crowd, fans rushed to support his
crowdsurf, and to get in on the action. The spiritual togetherness
of delirious? was fixating: there was no bass player or drummer
just "doing his thing," but an always-five-man effort, focus, and
aspiration to take the music higher. Tim, who'd been unmistakably
lost in worship throughout the set, hushed the melee with his
alleviative keyboard intro to "Kiss Your Feet." This "Isn't He
beautiful?" refrain became the evening's unifying anthem, a six-
minute recurrence that stretched to twelve when a "groove of the
Spirit" overtook the band and their adherents. Though its drops and
turns aren't as jolting as thrill rides like "Obsession," the
simple "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever" linked the generations,
denominations, and experiences of the concertgoers as Smith stepped
back from lead vocals and let the worshipers escort the presence of
God in.
delirious? milked every moment for the highest impact, from
truncating "Gravity" into a fleeting, 3:10 romp, to introducing the
raved Mezza single with, "Let's go to `Heaven,' yeah?" (and ending it
on a screeching, pulverizing Stu G. solo). The characteristic
Wembley Stadium hand-waving transfigured "Sanctify" to a declaration
of expectancy and love that everyone made their own. Another King of
Fools track, "History Maker," clinched the spectacle on a colossal,
impudent dare to speak, stand, and run for Christ.
"This is a good time to be alive because God is pleased with the
church, and we are in a church," said Martin as they wrapped up. "If
you believe for some reason you can make it living a life for Jesus
outside of the church--I'm basically saying it's impossible. Jesus
is not coming back for me and you, He's coming back for the bride.
I'm pleased because I know that we're going to make some history
here. We may even redeem the cowboy hat." A Texan near the stage
threw him just such a hat, and joy reigned as Martin jumped around
looking like a dodgy West Texas rancher. He cheerily ordered, "I
want to see everybody jumping! One, two, three, four..." A final
chorus was sung to the multitude's vaulting leaps, and delirious?
left despite loud demands for a "Deeper" encore. Heaven and earth
had converged, God and man had communed, and the oppressive Dallas
heat felt more like the afterglo of an intimate, world-shaking
encounter.
