For all you film addicts, we're now starting to expand our film
section. And, since we love you, the devouted readers, so much,
we're giving you the first look at our review at the revolutionary
title in the movie world: Toy Story. Starting a new era in
animation, and including a sequel which is actually as good as the
original, this series is something to talk about. So, read on!
TOY STORY (1995)
by Josh Shepherd
Few movies become entertainment franchises, and even fewer have
appeal that reaches to kids, college students, grandparents--
moviegoers of all ages. And while motion picture history may remember
Toy Story as "the first entirely computer-animated film," it's the
characterization and outrageous plot that viewers remember. With
simulated camera sweeps and startling details only technology could
accomplish, we encounter the childish premise that toys have a social
life and personalities all their own. After a toy soldiers re-con
mission of six year-old Andy's birthday, Woody's title as Andy's
favorite is threatened by the new stuck-up spaceranger Buzz
Lightyear. Sprinkled with humor, the dialogue moves the story along
swiftly from Buzz's not-so-accidental fall from a two-story window,
to he and Woody arriving at the dreaded Sid's room. Sight gags (like
the Barrel of Monkeys rescue attempt), one-liners ("You are a sad,
strange little man, and you have my pity"), and mockery of popular
culture (read: the green, squeaky aliens) make this one of the most
laugh-out-loud hilarious movies in recent years. Combine that fact
with the jaw-dropping, minute attention given to facial expressions,
textures, and split-second movements, and it's no wonder Toy Story is
an international phenomenon. Given even more dimension with Randy
Newman's soundtrack, the daring climax is reached when rivals Buzz
and Woody must work together to escape Sid's house and catch their
friends in one chase scene after another. The first in a new
generation of Disney/Pixar films, Toy Story is a classic tale of
friendship, enjoyable because you catch new bits of humor and
technical genius every time you watch it.
