This week, we have a special review of one of the best artists in the
Dallas indie circuit. This folk/pop artist brings a great deal of
insight to the listener, so we're please to welcome Dieter (not
dieter) Roth. Hope you enjoy it!
SHUFFLE - DIETER ROTH (1999)
by Josh M. Shepherd
Life is an interim, a match of grit, emotion, and freedom that will
ultimately resolve in eternity. Museful songwriter Dieter Roth stakes
out his corner of truth in Shuffle, an ambling, well-delivered pop
project. The opener breathes the dust of useless self-justification,
finding that only "In Your Love" is complete freedom. A leisurely
praise of the everyday "Majesty of God" progresses into "A Little
More True," Roth's overcast, depth-seeking inquiry of triviality and
tepid love. This single alone convinces listeners of Dieter's minute
insight, but the title track takes it a step further. Examining
attitudes of guilt, and misery, this unique, singable melody takes
both the miraculous and the mundane in a "Shuffle" towards the light,
realizing the price paid for joy, and dwelling in that grace. With a
tender mix of guitar, piano, bass, and percussion, Roth relates a
poetic, slow love song entitled "Dream Sweet Dreams." Back on the
subject of existence as an intermission, track five craves "Angel
Wings," and soars on a rhythmic verse artifice and the hope of
salvation through Christ. Only "Sirens' Song" and "More than Once in
a While" seemed stale, due to weak melodies and preachy concepts ("A
lady in red just walked by ~ Winked at him with her suggestive
eyes...") that make listeners cringe. "Trust" is a minor-key groove
discussing confidence in love, while "Overcome" looks at our racing,
dimly-understood life within the framework of a radio-friendly pop
style. Delving into a college A/C ballad, the closer brings to mind
a "Coffeeshop" with all the unafraid sharing and childhood
remembrance that implies. Produced by Ed Cash between his sessions
with Bebo Norman and Caedmon's Call, independent-minded Dieter Roth
shines profundity on the daily Shuffle through routine and
relationship.
