Thanks, Phil! Sounds great now.

It is possible, as you can see, to gather a collection of musicians
('fabrics'), from tracks 5 to 16 (1 to 4 is reserved for the drummer),
that can join in a jamsession, by almost pointing at them.
So far TWL talk (but this will be my personal project for a while,
the TWL Jam Session!)

Now up to FMC2, which seems to have not such a steep learning
curve. I tried it already and yes, sounds good! It'll be on the air soon...

Bob.

Phil,

I think you found out already how to get access to a saved FMC2 midi
file, but for all the others (I had to find out myself too, but reading
helped!):

*You have to save to the (virtual) A-drive, next drag it, while still in
Steem,
from the A to the (Steem) C-drive folder*... and then you'll find it back as
a regular
midi file... in Windows!... great, Bill!!

Phil, all,

Perhaps 'PHASE2' could be the name of another 'CD' production
(whereby we use the knowledge of the PHASE1 exploration of
these softs) ??

an idea ocurred to me reading this - there is a Linux version (Xfractint) of
the Fractint program
that combines almost all fractal formulas you can think about. Since the
source code is available,
one ONLY has to hack an extension to midi.

Just my 0.02 Euro worth

Oh, and Xfractint is here:

The "Expresso" tool in KeyKit (which runs on Linux) uses an
L-systems fractal generator. You can play with this algorithm
interactively at http://nosuch.com/music/expresso.cgi
and http://nosuch.com/music/roast.cgi
The documentation for the Expresso tool inside KeyKit can be
found at http://nosuch.com/keykit/doc/lib/wexpresso.html
You can find other L-systems fractal music generators
by searching the web.

Yes... I mention this in the FMC manual as well...BUT the steem authors came
with a fix, and if you download the STT file from the FMC page, you run that
FIXIT .prg and then you can save to the C drive.

Just got an email from the steem authors about this and they said that if
you create a folder called AUTO in the A drive version of FMC and copy the
fixit prg in there, you don't have to worry about running it everytime as
when steem boots up, it will run that program before it gets to the desktop

ahh...the bottom left corner of the main composer screen. You can
pick O or 1, and also set your Pulses per Quarter note. ( Items 22
and 23 on the main composer screen map on the PDF.) Having the Screen
maps in front of you while you explore the program really helps.

BTW: Type 1 MIDI file seperates all the tracks out seperatly, while
Type 0 MIDI file merges all the tracks onto 1 track. This is a
   standard in the MIDI spec.

Another thing you might find interesting is, while FMC does have a
way to send program changes to your instruments,(by selecting the
MIDI button in the top right corner of the main composer screen) it
does NOT save it to the MIDI file. This might be a good thing, as you
can take it into Cakewalk or whatever and do all your program changes
   in your fav sequencer.

Not too bad! It starts to develope towds the end. The real trick
in "arranging" is in the tonality screeen. Also in the main composer
screen you can set your note limits which seems to be very importment
in the overall composition. For example if you set one of
the "tracks" to have a note limit of 2 and 3, it can generate a very
nice bass line. Its good to be more restrictive on some tracks, while
giving others more headway ( like 3 to 8) You can also audition the
highest and lowest notes by selecting the hi-lo icons to the left of
the screen. Some tips there.

way around this fun software.
A long way to go before having mastery over FMC, but as with every journey,
it must start with a first

Have you found any best areas or methods of extracting the fractal plots
from the M-Set with FMC?
you take - what - 12 samples - does any particular area lend itself better
for certain things within
     FMC?

The fractal is the "Latoocarfian" fractal from the book "Chaos in
Wonderland" by Cliff Pickover. I took the algorithm from the book and
wrote a short program to generate the fractal (I could not find any
other programs that had the Latoocarfian implementation, this was about
2 years ago).

I wrote a series of commandline programs to "search", "plot", and
various other tools to work with the fractal. The search program is used
to find new fractal terms that result in an attractor. The plot program
is used to create a graphic. These programs were written in ANSI C (I
have compiled them on both Windows and Linux).

This particular set of 'etudes' was created by a single program (also
written in C), each MIDI paired file generated was produced from a
different set of fractal terms. The 'a' and 'b' in the filenames
indicates that these MIDI files used the same fractal terms, they use a
different offset from the starting point in the fractal (ie they
generated similar files).

There were two different algorithms used to "map" the fractal data to
music data. The first is a "pseudo-rubato" section where the pitch,
onset, duration, and amplitude data was extracted from the fractal data
using the following:

pitch = scale(X[0], loPitch, hiPitch)
onset += scale(X[-1], loOnset, hiOnset)
amplitude = scale(Y[0], loAmp, hiAmp)
duration = scale(Y[-1], loDur, hiDur)
new piano(onset, duration, pitch, amplitude)

The 'X' and 'Y' refers to the iterated variable. The [-1] index refers
to the "history" buffer. The buffer is used to store previous fractal
iterated values, where -1 indicates the last value generated. This
"history" buffer comes in handy where trying to generated a LOT of data
(ie for a Csound instrument). It also is an easy way to prevent having
several parameters that follow the same contour.

The 'scale' function is used to scale the fractal data into the range
required for the parameter. The 'lo' and 'hi' parameters represent the
limits for the respective parameter.

The second algorithm used is a little more complex:

density = scale(X[-2], loDen, hiDen)
pitch = scale(X[0], loPit, hiPit)
velocity = scale(Y[0], loVel, hiVel)
new piano(now, .125, pitch, velocity)
while(density > 0) {
     pitch += scale(X[-1], loInterval, hiInterval)
     new piano(now, .125, pitch, velocity)
     density--
}

The overall shape of the piece is determine by a fractal as well. Each
algorithm is allowed to run for a specific duration (as based on the
fractal).

These sets of program that I have written have no GUI interface, they
are all commandline (hence the reason they are so cumbersome to work
with). I am working on rewriting the program in Java, but for some
reason, the fractal code does not produce the same series of numbers as
the C version does. When I use the fractal terms from the original book,
I get the same "rendered" images, so I know that the C program is
correct, but the Java code is NOT... The rendering engine in Java works,
thou.

Hope this wasn't too long winded...

Mike

Hello fractagens,

A friend of mine mentioned to me something she heard on National Public Radio
that sounds interesting.

I looked into it and lo and behold it sounds like a new CD featuring possible
generative music.

David Byrne (remember him? the singer for the Talking Heads?) has a record label
that puts out various
artist compilations of lesser known music. His latest is a CD compilation of
what is called Blip-Hop.

I read some reviews and they mention the use of machines to make the music.
That could be a very
wide interpretation, but the reviews of the music sounded like what you would
say about a generative
music album (kind of like the Fractal Garden project). I emailed the PR guy
for the label, asking
about it.

By the way, she is the only non-generative musician that likes generative music
that I know of (other than
that occasional fan mail from MP3 listeners), and she is a poet.

Hi Phil and all

It says in the manual to select BUSY areas for the best result. You can also
load another BUSIER plot in the main composer screen.Top right corner: click
on "load fractal Image". There are several images provided. If you are using
monochrome: pick the ones that have an H in the title.( Hi Res) M means
medium Res and L means Low res.

Sometimes I select a wide area, then select WITHIN that area, as it zooms
the area selected to a certain degree.

Dear All,
I hope you will all be glad to hear about (and attend) one or both of these
concerts in NYC later this month.
If you don't live within manageable distance of NYC do please let local
friends know about it.
This collaboration with Lisa has been a great, joyful and spiritual
exhiliration since we first began working together last year.

good wishes to:
all tuners, max-ers, fractal composers/programmers, iotans and experimental
musicians, algorithmic composers and agni yogis......... keep creating and
keeping our energy uplifted whilst many others fail to imagine how to
elevate either us or themselves....

in thoughts for serious global peace at present,......

Lawrence Ball

Lawrence Ball and Lisa Sangita fuse their Western and Eastern classical
roots
into a fluid, lyrical and ecstatic expression. The music ebbs and flows
between deeply reflective and highly animated moods, and between
straightforward and intricately interwoven textures. These pieces begin
from
the raga format, but evolve according to the in-the-moment emotional pulse
and interplay. Since the Oct.26th concert coincides with the huge anti-war
rally
in Washington D.C., we would like to dedicate it and the Oct.23rd one as
well
to the principle of working to create peace through non-violent cooperation.
We would agree with one wise soul who has said that war is a failure of the
imagination.
Both Lawrence and Lisa have been improvising and composing for over 30
years.
Lawrence has recorded almost 2000 pieces of distinctive piano explorations,
the
hallmark of his repertoire. He is also the director of the Planet Tree
Music
Festival
in London which has presented new and exciting musical programs since 1996.
Lisa Sangita who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area specializes in playing
her

electric sarod (a one-of-a-kind adaptation of the traditional classical
Indian
sarod)
in unusual contexts, but has found the greatest satisfaction in the
combination
of
sarod with chordal instruments. She studied with maestro Ali Akbar Khan for
more than 15 years. The timbres of sarod and piano are quite similar, but
they

differ widely in the way they express themselves (piano being a very
harmonic
instrument and sarod being more strictly melodic). Together they create a
whole
new musical language.

" contemplative... capable of transporting listeners into hypnotic reveries
rife with ingenious improvisations and ever-mounting creative energy
a sonic mix that promises enthralling melodies and rapturous rhythms."
Derk Richardson The East Bay Express

Hi All

As you may have noticed, I just uploaded some experiments I have been doing
with FMC. I am still learning the program myself. I tried doing some
settings to generate percussion, thus you will see my perc1.mid. FMC DOES
produce some interesting percussion patterns. Still experimenting however.
You set all your Midi channels to chan 10, and carefully set your note
limits, then experiment with the rtyhm screen for each track, then compose
and see what it sounds like.
Some of the other stuff was experiments in mutitimbral or just piano, or
piano and strings. These are "raw" files however, with no editing at
all.Feel free to use any as seed files.
