I think sometimes, if i'm hearing it correctly, he goes from alternating 1st and 4ths strings in drop d to thumping the 1st (base string dropped to d)...
I think what he means, rather, is that in many songs he will drone a bass note over the solo, rather than try (as in Rocket Launcher) to maintain the song's...

It's actually 6th and 5th strings in Water Into Wine, alternating between D and A. He pretty much does it the whole song, but there are a few small instants...
