3 September 2003

Greetings:

A Cockburn Project reader noticed that the September 3 issue of ICE

it out and the following is the result:

Ranked by many as Cockburn's best album, Humans (1980) was the first
of his more rock-oriented releases. Wielding an electric guitar,
Cockburn infused the entire album with a tougher sound, resulting in
classics such as "Rumours of Glory" and "Tokyo."
Includes: "Grim Travellers," "Rumours of Glory," "More Not
More," "You Get Bigger As You Go," "What About the Bond," "How I
Spent My Fall Vacation," "Guerrilla Betrayed," "Tokyo," "Fascist
Architecture," "The Rose Above the Sky"

Another contributor wrote in to tell The Cockburn Project about a
piece of art they'd come accross with obvious connections to Bruce
and his influence at: http://www.petergullerud.com/ At their
suggestion I contacted the artist and conducted an e-interview to get
the low-down on his work entitled: I Am the Eggman. What follows are
his candid comments:

CP: There are obvious references to Bruce's work in your poster
entitled: I Am the Eggman and it is listed as a 'gift' to Bruce
Cockburn on your website. How did that come about?

PG: I was once invited to a Cockburn concert backstage in Toronto
due to work I did on a rainforest comic book (grootlore.com)
incorporating Bruce's lyrics "If a Tree Falls". I was a Cockburn
fan before that, so I simply decided to see him on his recent tour
when he played at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood. I was able to
give the original painting to his road manager before the concert
began. Bruce was kind to send me a note in thanks.

CP: How, specifically has Bruce's music/lyrics influenced you in
your artwork?

PG: Rather profoundly at times..as in this painting. As a poet,
Bruce has a gift of painting pictures with words. I try to
incorporate similar feelings and messages with my paintings. He
makes you think. I try to make people think when they view my
political or spiritual paintings. I once did a painting
called "Kicking the Darkness 'til It Bleeds Daylight", words directly
taken from his song "Lovers in a Dangerous Time". Musically, he
inspires on a more subconscious level. Lots of emotion there. I
often paint while listening to my favorite music. The better the
music, the more inspired a painting can become.

CP: The political message of I Am the Eggman seems to be fairly
self-explanatory, but what do you expect the viewer to bring away
from the piece?

PG: Some kind of wake-up call, I suppose. 2004 is just around the
corner. I want people to become less complacent when it comes to
politics and elections. Too many "progressive-minded" people don't
vote. Many think "what good does it do?"
On the other hand, you have well meaning people voting for great
potential leaders who unfortunatley don't stand a chance due to the
media biases, etc. One reason I voted for Gore was I knew Nader
didn't stand a chance. Green Party people tried to tell me "the
lesser of two evils is still evil - we need to make a third party
statement". I would say "the lesser of two evils is less evil. We
can't let Bush become president." Even though it was a stolen
election, if more people had voted, we wouldn't have Bush in power
today. We wouldn't have as much hatred toward us as is evidenced
from very little world support for this past Iraq war. On 9/11, the
world was on our side. It didn't take long for that to end. And we
might not have an economy as bad as we have now due to the further
propagation of "trickle down" economics.
Too many "conservatives" go right along with their Commander-in-
Chief even when deception has become grossly evident. Not enough
questioning. Again, too much complacency. The painting [I Am the
Eggman] is influenced by the song "All Our Dark Tomorrows" from
Bruce's new album [You've Never Seen Everything].

CP; Is the term 'I Am the Eggman' a reference to the Beatles tune of
the same name?

PG: Oh, yeah. I just thought it was a good title even though the
smug Bush would never admit to having egg on his face after all the
empty surprises his war and administration have produced.

CP: Eariler you mentioned a website [http://www.grootlore.com/] and
made reference to a comic book that featured the lyrics to 'If a Tree
Falls'. How did that project come about and what organization was
involved in its creation?

PG: It was totally a self projected project that was endorsed by
Fantagraphics Books, Inc. I had published a lighter version of
Grootlore with them prior and they gave the ecology story its
blessing. Mr. Cockburn and Bernie Finkelstein gave me permission to
use the lyrics in the first book of the trilogy. I was always
passionate about ecology matters ..another reason [was being] a big
fan of Mr. Cockburn.

Editor's note: Bruce has expressed a strong interest in the art of
the comic book and has spoken about considering it as a alternative
career choice during dry spells or writer's block episodes.

Thanks to Peter for his willingness to contribute to The Cockburn
Project and thanks to our readers who supply us with leads and ideas
for articles and interviews.

Peace,
