14 November 2004

Greetings:

The Cockburn Project is pleased to bring you a reprint of Greg King's
interview with Bruce Cockburn that originally appeared in The Sun
Magazine, June 2004. We have reprinted the interview in its entirety
with Greg's permission. Here's a sample of the in-depth interview at
http://www.cockburnproject.net:

King: Your activist colleague Jody Williams, a Nobel Peace Prize
laureate and founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines,
calls the current Bush administration "the most dangerous in U.S.
history." How do you think this administration compares with, say, the
Ronald Reagan administration?

Cockburn: Reagan was the first cosmetic president. He seemed to be
nothing but appearances. His successor, the first President Bush, was
not cosmetic. This was a guy who had been head of the secret police,
the CIA. He was presumably an adept string-puller, someone who hides
his real activities behind the facade of the presidency, like a con
game to keep the public docile. It's hard for me to understand how
Americans feel about their president. I've never been anyplace else
where people invest so much of their own ego in the head of state.
People in the U.S. take criticism of the president personally. "Our
president, right or wrong" is the attitude. But the president of the
United States is just an elected bozo, no better than the rest of us.

True North Records reports the following:

"Bruce also continues to have his songs covered by different artists.
Cockburn compositions can be found on albums by more than 200
different artists including the Barenaked Ladies, Jerry Garcia, Maria
Muldar, Anne Murray and The Rankins. This summer saw the release of
two high-profile albums with Bruce Cockburn songs included; Jimmy
Buffett's License To Chill features two Cockburn tracks, "Anything
Anytime Anywhere" and "Someone I Used To Love" performed as a duet
between Buffett and Nanci Griffith. License To Chill remains in the
Top 50 selling albums in the US. Hymns To The 49th Parallel is the new
disc from kd Lang which features covers of some of her favorite
Canadian composers including a great take on Bruce's "One Day I Walk".
Other interesting Cockburn covers this year include Brit band Elbow
covering "Live On My Mind"; Montreal-based jazz singer Ranee Lee
interpreting "My Beat"; and Irish blues singer Mary Coughlan covering
"Blues Got The World", originally recorded for Bruce's Night Vision
album in 1973.

The next three titles in the re-issue series will be released early in
2005. The next three albums to get re-mastered and re-packaged will
be Circles In The Stream, Sunwheel Dance, and Big Circumstance. Keep
reading True Notes for details on bonus tracks and extra's to be
included in these upcoming re-releases."
