4 November 2002

Greetings,

The Online Folk Festival is a streaming internet radio station
playing a wide variety of folk-related music 24/7 via the internet.
November 4-11 Greg Grant will be featuring Bruce Cockburn and playing
songs that span his entire career. You can tune in on-line and listen
while you work at: http://www.live365.com/stations/woodsmeister.

November 16 Bruce will be performing in Shanghai, China to benefit
UNICEF. Read on for an explanation of what UNICEF, and this concert
in particular is all about.

From UNICEF:
To commemorate Universal Children's Day, a day of world-wide
fraternity and understanding between children and a day of activity
promoting the welfare of the world's children, and in connection with
the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), on
16 November 2002 UNICEF-China will host a benefit concert to raise
awareness of the major issues facing China's children and to seek
wider support for its ongoing programmes in China.

Created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1946 to help
children in Europe after World War II, the United Nation Children's
Fund (UNICEF) is the lead UN agency for children that works globally,
striving for a world where all children have a childhood of joy and
promise, realizing their rights to dignity, security, and self-
fulfilment.

Since China's ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the
Child in 1989, it has provided the legal mandate and framework for
UNICEF-China's work for the protection and well-being of children.
Under the Convention, every child--whether male or female, wherever
they happen to be born or who their parents happen to be, or how much
income they earn--has the right to the same basic things which all
children need to realize their full potential. Although China's
economic success has led to major gains for children in urban areas,
the children of the rural poor have not benefited to the same
extent. Some of the major areas of UNICEF's work include:promoting
equal opportunities for all children, providing second-chance
education for school drop-outs, combating HIV/AIDS stigma and
discrimination, promoting child immunization and safe injections,
salt iodization for elimination of iodine deficiency, combating
trafficking of women and children, combating gender stereotyping, and
microcredit programmes for women's empowerment.

UNICEF has actively worked for the cause of children in China for the
past twenty years, focusing its programmes in the poorest rural areas
of the country where an estimated 100 million people still live on
less than one dollar a day.UNICEF-China has committed US$105 million
over 5 years to improve the lives of children in China. The total
number of children in China is nearly 360 million, over half of the
total child population of the east Asia-Pacific region.

The annual Concert for UNICEF-Chinais a forum for international,
regional, and local celebrities to demonstrate and promote public
commitment to children's issues and highlight UNICEF initiatives
in one of the world's most populous countries. The concert will act
as a long-term communication platform to advocate for the needs of
Chinese children and for UNICEF projects in China. For 2002, the
Concertfor UNICEF-China will be held under the theme Changing the
World With Children.

It is a part of the world-wide campaign Global Movement for
Children, headed by Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel, which
aims to facilitate citizen action and obtain the commitment of key
actors in all sectors of society to make a real difference in the
fulfilment of children's rights. It involves a commitment to achieve
real action at all levels. The call of the Global Movement is to
change the world with children. This involves listening to what
children have to say, giving them the chance to speak, and enabling
their participation. The event will focus on the importance of
counting all children in, of allowing their voice to be heard and
recognizing their ability to change their world. It will highlight
UNICEF's School-in-a-Box education initiative and the importance of
an education for all children girls and boys alike, as the stepping-
stone to havingtheir voices heard and change effected.
