Greetings:
Bruce's management, True North Records, has asked The Cockburn Project
to pass this along to our readers:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OUTSTANDING REVIEWS FOR BRUCE COCKBURN'S CANADIAN TOUR
AFTER THUNDER BAY TOUR HEADS WEST INTO
SASKATOON, CALGARY, KAMPLOOPS, KELOWNA, VANCOUVER, VICTORIA, NANAIMO
COCKBURN PLANS TRIP TO VENEZUELA BEFORE EUROPEAN TOUR
TORONTO OCTOBER 24, 2006 - The Canadian dates for Bruce Cockburn's
North American tour are seeing packed venues, double encores and
five-star show reviews. Performing with Julie Wolf (Ani DiFranco) and
Gary Craig (Blackie & The Rodeo Kings) critics are claiming that the
songs off LIFE SHORT CALL NOW are some of Cockburn's best material
yet. This is Bruce Cockburn's 29th release with appearances from Ani
Difranco, Damhnait Doyle, Hawksley Workman and Ron Sexsmith.
Bruce had the number one video on BRAVO in Canada last week for the
single "Different When It Comes To You". A CP wire service story
caused a buzz when it asked Cockburn what would you do if the Taliban
invaded Canada? "I would enlist, some freedoms are worth defending,
regardless of your personal beliefs about war" claimed Cockburn.
The LIFE SHORT CALL NOW tour hits Thunder Bay, Wednesday, October 25
then heads west to Saskatoon, Friday, October 27 and the Canadian tour
finishes in Nanaimo on November 6. Before Bruce embarks on the
European dates he makes a stop in Venezuela.

Greetings:
Be sure to check out http://www.cockburnproject.net for recent updates
to the setlists section. David Newton has been updating both newer
tour dates and older ones as readers send in setlists, scans of the
actual setlists Bruce uses and pictures to include on the tour dates
pages. As Johnny Carson used to say: Keep those cards and letters
coming in, folks....that's how we build on The Cockburn Project, with
contributions from our readers. We also accept transcriptions of
interviews with Bruce or his own comments during shows. If you are
good at transcribing consider sending in some contributions from
recordings you may have.
Colin Linden, long-time musical associate of Bruce Cockburn contacted
The Cockburn Project wanting our readers to know that he's going on a
very short tour in Europe and the UK in October. He'd love to have
Cockburn fans come and hear his music in one of the following venues:
Radio gig: Bremen, Germany 10/5/2006
Take Root Festival, Assen, The Netherlands 10/7/2006
The Borderline, London, England 10/9/2006
You can also visit his website at: www.colinlinden.com for other tour
information.
For those readers who don't know Colin he played in Bruce Cockburn's
band from 1991-1994 and then worked
with him producing his recordings from 1996-2005. They still play
together in their 'sometimes' band "Bambi and The Deer Hunters".
That's it for this issue of The Cockburn News. Hope you are enjoying
fall or spring (depending on your hemisphere) we're having Indian
Summer in my neck of the woods.
Peace,
Suzanne Myers

There are several new dates added to Bruce's tour in November and True
North tells us he'll continue to tour with his current band Julie Wolf
(keyboards) and Gary Craig (drums). Here are the November dates we've
received. Please visit: http://www.cockburnproject.net and go to the
'tourdates' page for further information and a complete listing of
Bruce's tourdates. In some cases we have the venue information posted
so you can find out about tickets.

Nov 6 Nanaimo, BC Port Theatre
Nov 8 Bend OR Tower Theatre
Nov 9 Petaluma, CA Mystic Theatre
Nov 12 Santa Fe, NM Eldorado Hotel Pavilon
Nov 15 Austin, TX One World Theatre (Two Shows) *
True North also passed along these great links to YouTube. They have
a True North page where you can view videos of Bruce in action. It's
a wonderful retrospective of his work. They are interested in your
feedback on his most current video for the single off of Life Short
Call Now, It's Different When It Comes to You. You have to join utube
to be able to rate the video, but it's easy to do. There are several
links here that bring you to different parts of the site. I would
imagine that a highspeed connection (which I've got)makes this a whole
lot quicker, but apparently you can also create a playlist and/or
download this stuff to your own computer. If you search on 'Bruce
Cockburn' you will come up with other stuff not put there by True
North, some of it older video taken from Canadian TV and other
sources, some of it people's 'homemade' videos featuring Bruce's
music, but it's also worth a look.

That's it for this issue of The Cockburn News. Bobbi Wisby our

changes there. David Newton is trying to keep up with the setlist
submissions that readers send in as well. If you have setlist info,
pictures of gigs, scans of tickets or other memorabelia you can send
that directly to him at: setlists@.... Thank you to
all who have sent these kinds of things along. We also welcome
transcriptions of Bruce's own comments from gigs, on-air interviews,

Greetings:
This just in from a reader in Minnesota:
"My local public radio station, "The Current," recently had Bruce as a
guest for a wonderful interview/performance segment. It aired
yesterday morning (July 7) on The Morning Show, a truly eclectic daily
music and humor program hosted by Dale Connelly and Jim Ed Poole (AKA
Tom Keith, who also does the sound effects for Prairie Home
Companion). They've been playing an amazing amount of Bruce's stuff
this year, which no other station in the Twin Cities seems to do.
(Actually, the others seem to play none at all). The good news for
everyone else is that the entire interview is available for listening
at the station's web site. In case you want to list it on the web
site, the link is":
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2006/07/07/bruce_cockburn/
Keep those setlists and touring information coming in...we're posting
information on the 'setlists' pages. If you have stuff to share,
including photos, scans of the actual setlist, etc. send it to:
setlists@....

Greetings:
Below is the original newsletter I sent out earlier this afternoon,
but since I've received quite a few questions as to 'how to' locate
the song to vote, here's how:
On the left side of the KFOG webpage is a link to click: "Fogheads Only"
Next screen, under the picture click on: "Foghead Music Panel"
In the voting section, Bruce's song is #8.
I hope that helps! One reader also reported he's heard the song
'Different When It Comes to You' on XM Radio.
Enjoy!

Original Newsletter:
True North sent this along and I thought you'd all be interested in
hearing asnippet from Bruce's new album: Life Short Call Now, due out
in North Americaon July 18th. The single from the album will be
"Different When It Comes to You" and if you go to:
http://www.kfog.com/
you can become a 'foghead' and get a chance to listen to the song and
'rate' it.KFOG broadcasts out of San Francisco, but people everywhere
can listen and voteonce you 'join'. Directions how to do it are listed
at the site.
The song title & artist are anonymous so listeners are only voting on
the sonicsof the song, but I've told you the title and of course you'd
recognize Bruce on your own!

Greetings:
Of course the biggest news is the North American release of Life Short
Call Now July 11th. Keep watching The Cockburn Project for updates as
we receive them.
As previously reported, Bruce Cockburn's hit song "Wondering Where The
Lions Are" has been recorded
by Jimmy Buffett and is the opening theme to the upcoming film "Hoot",
according to a recent e-mail from True North.
They went on to say that "Hoot" is based on the Newbery Award honoured
book which has been a New York
Times bestseller.
The movie is set for a May 4 North American release. The film is
directed by Wil Shriner and is produced by Frank Marshall and Jimmy
Buffett. Visit here to read more about it: www.hootmovie.com/
There will be a soundtrack album released to coincide with the release
of the film.
As announced at http://www.cockburnproject.net earlier this week, True
North has begun to release tourdates for the coming season:

18 March 2006
Greetings:
We've passed the Ides of March and hopefully (depending on your
hemispheric view) you are looking forward to a change to Spring or
Fall. In my half of the world it's Spring, and I'm ready, bring it on!
In an e-exchange with Bernie Finkelstein, Bruce's career-long manager
and president of True North Records, I received some news about
Bruce's projects and other goings-on to pass along to our readership.
As you may already know, Bruce has been back in the studio recording
a new CD now titled Life Short Call Now, which will have a release
date of July 11, 2006 in North America. Bernie said, "It's got lots
of wonderful things on it, including the use of a 23-piece string
section that is just wonderful." Principle players in the band are
Dave Piltch on bass who's well-known for his work with kd lang, Gary
Craig on drums/percussion who's worked with Bruce before and Julie
Wolf on keyboards who's recorded/toured with Bruce but also, very
notably with Ani di Franco. Kevin Turcott plays the horns on several
cuts and there's even a brass band on one cut! The CD will include
two or three instrumentals. Produced by Jonathan Goldsmith, some of
the songs are Beautiful Creatures, Mystery, Peace March, Different
When it Comes To You and Slow Down Fast, some of which Bruce had
previewed during his last legs of his 2005 tour. Bernie noted, "Great,
great record and very fresh."
Touring dates will be announced soon, a few in late June, some in July
but the bulk of the tour will begin in August and continue through to
the end of November. The tour will resume again in the new year
(egads, 2007!) The earlier dates will be solo, but beginning in
August and through November Bruce will be touring with a band. I
passed along the requests I get from readers for tourdates in the UK,
Australia and the southern US and Bernie said the 'chances are good'
for dates in Europe and Australia in the early new year.
Jimmy Buffet has recorded Wondering Where the Lions Are for the theme
of a new movie call Hoot, based on the book Hoot. Some of you may
remember that Jimmy also recorded Anything Anytime Anywhere and
Someone I Used to Love, on his CD License To Chill, which hit the
charts at #1 in 2004. He also recorded The Charity of Night, which
got significant air-play and brought more fans over to find out more
about Bruce and his work. The movie is due to be released April 21,
2006 and Bernie said, "Jimmy does a great job on Lions".
Bruce will be receiving a special Humanitarian award during this
year's JUNO Award weekend to be held in Halifax on March 31-April 2,
2006. Bruce's award will be presented at a ceremony on March 31st.
This is the first Humanitarian award ever presented by the JUNOs and
Bruce will be present at the ceremony. Bruce has been nominated 29
times for a JUNO and has won nine times.
Bruce is also featured on one of the DVDs up for the Music DVD of the
Year at the awards as:
LIVE 8 - Toronto - Michael Watt, Rob Brooks - Various Artists EMI
Rob Brooks
The vice-president of marketing at EMI Music Canada, Brooks has worked
with an amazing assortment of Canadian acts from The Tea Party and
Shaye to Anne Murray and Tom Cochrane.
Various Artists
The single disc features highlights from the worldwide concert to help
"make poverty history." The Toronto portion of Live 8 featured
Canadian artists Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams, Bruce Cockburn, Randy
Bachman and The Carpet Frogs, Sam Roberts, Simple Plan, Blue Rodeo,
Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies and Neil Young.
You can read more about the JUNOs, this year's nominees and Bruce's
accomplishments at:

Greetings:
It's been a while since we've passed along information, but these two
'bits' seemed 'newsletter worthy', so here they are!
Andrew MacNaughtan, Canada's award-winning rock photographer has
organized a photographic celebration as a means of raising funds for
and awareness of MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY with the ultimate goal to
alleviate Third World debt. The participating artists have all spoken
out for this cause and Bruce Cockburn is among the over 50 Canadian
recording artists participating in "A Decade of Music Portraits" for
Art Gives Hope. One autographed edition will be up for auction
between March 7 -17 and 24 more unsigned editions are currently
available for purchase. These are in rare quantities. Among all
Bruce Cockburn fans only 25 will own these. Proceeds from this event
will benefit humanitarian efforts in Africa. For more information
visit http://www.artgiveshope.ca . Not only is this a chance to own a
piece of music history, it's a chance to save lives and end suffering.
And in other news:
Signpost Music is pleased to announce the immanent release of Steve
Bell's twelfth career album!
Steve Bell / My Dinner With Bruce songs of Bruce Cockburn
Steve has been a staple of the Winnipeg music community for over 25
years. His career has produced a dozen solo albums selling well over a
quarter of a million copies independently and garnering numerous
awards including JUNOS in 1997 and 2000.
Steve Bell has now chosen to celebrate Bruce Cockburn's ongoing
contribution to music and culture with the release of My Dinner with
Bruce, a collection of 13 of Steve's favorite Cockburn compositions.
Steve's interpretations, driven by his virtuoso acoustic guitar play
and distinctive tenor voice, make this album a treasure for both the
Bell and Cockburn faithful, as well as those discovering these artists
for the first time. The album, recorded in the fall of 2005, will be
released nationally on the Signpost label.
Of this new project, Bernie Finkelstein (President / True North
Records) says, "Steve Bell finds the beauty, strength, and intrigue in
Bruce Cockburn's songs and gives each track his own fine
interpretation. Simply said, this is a wonderful record".
Enjoy!

Greetings:
Happy New Year one and all. Hopefully this new year will bring the
peace we are all seeking.
This just in from Nicholas Jennings, author of Before the Gold Rush -
Flashbacks to the Dawn of the Canadian Sound, an excellent historical
reference to the early 'life and times' of Bruce Cockburn, the
beginnings of his partnership with Bernie Finklestein/True North
Records and many other noteable Canadian musicians. It's truly 'worth
a read' and though out of print can (I just searched before writing
this) be found in limited quantity through the link to amazon.com at
http://www.cockburnproject.net. However, this press release is about
something equally exciting:
NEWS RELEASE
www.cbc.ca
SHAKIN' ALL OVERCANADIAN POP MUSIC IN THE 1960S
ON CBC TELEVISION, MONDAY, JAN. 30 AT 8 P.M.
The flower-power decade gave the world a wealth of great music, from
England's mods to America's psychedelic rockers. But the hippie era
also gave us cool sounds from the Great White North. It started with
the folk music of Ian & Sylvia and the rhythm 'n' blues of Ronnie
Hawkins and quickly evolved into a sonic revolution, as literally
hundreds of bands and singer-songwriters from coast to coast began
making noise. SHAKIN' ALL OVER captures all of those freewheeling
sounds, from such legendary stars as Joni Mitchell, The Guess Who,
Neil Young, Anne Murray and The Band to cult heroes like David Wiffen,
The Collectors and Mashmakhan. The two-hour special airs on CBC
Television, Monday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m.
SHAKIN' ALL OVER takes viewers on a trip back in time to Vancouver's
4th Avenue, Winnipeg's community centres, Montreal's dance halls and
the clubs and coffeehouses that sprang up along Toronto's Yorkville
and Yonge Street. There, in the absence of a music industry, a brave
new sound began to emerge. The special is full of candid interviews
with more than 60 iconic figures like Gordon Lightfoot, Buffy
Sainte-Marie and Bruce Cockburn, who offer illuminating stories about
each other. And, the show features an abundance of rare performance
clips from the period, from Early Morning Rain to Oh What a Feeling.
But SHAKIN' ALL OVER also features some of Canada's brightest younger
stars, including Blue Rodeo, Barenaked Ladies and Sarah Harmer, who
pay tribute to the period. Hawksley Workman tells of being inspired by
Ian Tyson, who wrote his first song, Four Strong Winds, after hearing
"this punk named Dylan." Matthew Good fondly remembers cranking the
volume on Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride. And Sloan's Jay Ferguson
draws a connection between the Canadian bands of the '60s and current
garage-rock favourites. Said Ferguson: "If you listen to records by
The Ugly Ducklings or The Great Scots, they could almost be a hit in
this day, because it's so contemporary with the revival of that sound
by The White Stripes and The Hives."
Along with vintage archival footage from a variety of sources,
including the CBC, SHAKIN' ALL OVER mines contemporary material to
present recent covers of classic Canadian songs, including Diana
Krall's spellbinding performance of Joni Mitchell's A Case of You and
Margo Timmins' and Tom Cochrane's stunning rendition of The Guess
Who's American Woman. This is a music lover's dream: a TV show with
non-stop performances, including more than 60 classic songs.
SHAKIN' ALL OVER is based on the book Before the Gold Rush -
Flashbacks to the Dawn of the Canadian Sound by Nicholas Jennings.
Directed by Gary McGroarty, and produced by Nick Orchard, Randolph
Eustace-Walden and Pierre L. Touchette. Executive producer is Luc
Chβtelain. Produced by Soapbox Productions and Amιrimage-Spectra.

We have lots of new entries at The Cockburn Project in the setlists
section thanks to our readership who've been contributing lots of
information about the gigs in Bruce's most recent tour. Thanks to
these contributions, The Cockburn Project continues to grow as a
resource for readers eager to learn more about Bruce's music.
A recent search shows that Bruce will be seen on Canadian TV on
Bravo!Canada Tuesday, January 17th. Read about it here, or check your
local listings if you reside in Canada:
http://www.bravo.ca/television/rehearsalhall/feature.asp
Bruce is going into the recording phase of a new album beginning
January 30th, according to an interview Daniel Keebler, who is the
editor/creator of Gavin's Woodpile, did with Bernie Finkelstein,
Bruce's manager. You can read the interview at:

29 October 2005
Greetings:
There has been a terrific amount of mail in my 'in' box regarding the
DVD I told you about last week. I did contact Bruce's management,
True North, asking if a US/Canadian format of the DVD would be
forthcoming and found out quite the opposite. The DVD was not
produced with either Bruce's or True North's permission, and it is not
sanctioned by True North or Bruce himself. Bruce was not compensated
for his work by the producers of this illegally produced DVD. That
being said, it is of course, up to you whether you acquire it or not.
I thought it was prudent to let everyone know what I'd found out and
so I have. There will be no US/Canadian version coming out.
That being said, apparently there's a lot to know about the
international DVD market and I've had a 'quick education' in the past
several days. I know that the information regarding this DVD
generated a lot of mail and discussion about the various 'modes' that
DVD's play in. One reader was kind enough to provide everyone with
some information as to which DVD players would work internationally
and how to set the controls on certain 'non-European' models to accept
and play European DVD's so I am going to pass along that information.
This information is 'generic' in nature, it would apply for any
international DVD someone might buy. The Cockburn Project takes no
responsibility for reader's choices regarding international DVD's or
how to play them on their machines. This information is being passed
along as a courtesy. Any adjustments you make to your equipment is
your own responsibility. I have also included links to sites you can
read about these conversions yourselves. So here goes:
The following machines have the capacity to be converted to 'region free':
Philips 642
Philips 727, only available used
Cyberhome 300, only available used, no longer made, poor quality playback
Cyberhome 500, only available used
It takes less then a minute to make them all region + Pal/NTSC
conversion. You can get directions how to reset the units at these sites:
http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/hackable.asphttp://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php
That's it on this topic for The Cockburn Project.

27 October 2005
Greetings:
Yes, greetings again! I've gotten information about another award
that Bruce has been honored with, a satellite radio broadcast in
December and lots of information on ordering DVD's internationally.
It's been an interesting 48 hours as readers worldwide have
responded to this DVD coming out October 31st. I've found some
places that will ship to the US/Canada (thanks to readers) and have
information on the format of this DVD. I've even been contacted by
an internet site interested in marketing the DVD to US/Canadian
customers. I've learned that apparently a DVD is not a DVD for all
and will not play on just any machine. DVD's are produced for
particular regions of the world and you need to either have a
machine that matches the format, have a machine that can play any
format or be able to use your computer to view DVD's. Here's the
information one true 'friend of the Project' sent along:
He ordered the dvd through the UK amazon(http://www.amazon.co.uk)
where you can mark orders as "gifts" through them and that way you
usually don't get charged any customs fees.
And from another reader:
You can pre-order the DVD from www.amazon.co.uk
And they will ship this outside the UK. It will be released on
October 31st.
And from another reader:
Bruce's DVD is also available at amazon.co.uk (British Amazon
website), and they do ship to the U.S. The total cost with shipping
is 13.28 pounds sterling, which is something on the order of $24 (I
haven't checked the exchange rates lately, so it could be a bit more
or a bit less). The DVD will be released in England on 10/31, and
it will ship that day or the next. I've ordered from amazon.co.uk
before, and I've found the shipping to take 4 to 5 days. Bear in
mind, however, that if you order a DVD from amazon.co.uk, you will
ordering a DVD coded for the British Isles and Europe. It will not
play on a U.S. or Canadian DVD player unless you have a multi-region
player. These are relatively common in Europe but not on this side
of the Atlantic. It is, however, fairly easy to switch region codes
if you are playing the DVD on your computer. On a Mac you will get
a dialog box asking if you wish to switch the region (although
you're limited to how many changes you can make unless you tweak the
system software). My Windows based friends tell me it's harder to
do (I think the region switching software has to be downloaded) but
not impossible on other PCs.
And from another reader in New Zealand:
Bensons World appear to deliver worldwide and have the DVD listed.
We have placed orders from New Zealand and they have not said they
can't ship them here. Shipping price is listed as 1GBP and DVD
price as 11.79GBP.
Here is the URL for the DVD -
http://www.bensonsworld.co.uk/dvd/7000000106377.asp
And from the original 'finder' of the DVD:
Another source in Germany:
http://www.glitterhouse.com/
And they do ship to US and Canada!!!
And now for some 'other news':
XM Satellite Radio has a one-hour program with BC scheduled to air
Dec. 12 at noon (ET) and again the same day at 9 p.m. (ET). This,
apparently, was recorded while he was in town for The Birchmere
show. It will air on The Loft Channel 50. BC did the first-ever
Loft Session at XM, a solo performance of about 28 minutes, several
years ago. This time, he's returned with a lot more.
Says Mike Marone of XM:
Bruce Cockburn
Back in the early days of The Loft, Canadian troubadour Bruce
Cockburn delivered what was both the very first and a very short
Loft Session. Returning for a second time, Bruce graciously played a
solid hour of faves mixed with select tunes off the new instrumental
CD Speechless. A true honour.
And last but not least, another long-time Cockburn Project friend
and contributor found this interesting information on True North's
website today:
Bruce will be receiving another honor. He will be receiving the 2005
Artistic Achievement Award on Dec 1st. This is awarded by the
Winnipeg Folk Festival. She saw the info on True North's
website...here is the link www.truenorthrecords.com/fullstory.php?
news_id=92
So, WHEW...thanks to everyone who's written in with information.
That's the beauty of The Cockburn Project, it's kept alive and
thriving by it's readership. I'll contact the internet sales rep who
wants to market the DVD and if there's more information to pass
along I'll pass it along!
Peace to all,

Bruce did the soundtrack for a Canadian film in 1984
called "Waterwalker." It's a lovely film and an equally lovely
soundtrack. I just happened to find it for $19 at

And for those of you who didn't get to see Live 8 here's a site
where you can watch some of the action, thanks to another reader of

Greetings:
This just in from True North:
BRUCE COCKBURN SET TO RECORD HIS FIRST INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM TITLED
SPEECHLESS
BRUCE COCKBURN CELEBRITY INTERVIEW AT
THE NORTH BY NORTHEAST MUSIC & FILM FESTIVAL JUNE 10, 2005
JUNE 2, 2005 TORONTO World-renowned guitar master Bruce Cockburn
is getting ready to record his 28th collection of songs for his
first ever instrumental recording. The album will be produced by
Colin Linden and Bruce Cockburn and is scheduled for a world-wide
September/October release.
Pieces are being chosen now, some gems coming from previous albums.
SPEECHLESS (The Instrumental Bruce Cockburn) will also include
several new songs and recordings.
Instrumental pieces chosen for SPEECHLESS include: Sunwheel Dance,
the title track from Sunwheel Dance, (1971) Fox Glove from 1973's
Night Vision, Mistress of Storms from The Charity of Night (1996)
and Salt, Sun and Time from Salt, Sun and Time (1974).
On Friday, June 10 at 4PM Bruce will take a different stage when
journalist Nick Jennings interviews him for The North by Northeast
Music & Film Festival (NXNE) at the Holiday Inn on King Street. The
NXNE Festival takes pride in 2005 by celebrating independent success
stories. Besides recording 27 albums, writing hundreds of songs,
receiving numerous prestigious awards, Bruce is also known as a
compassionate ambassador for humanitarian causes world-wide. He has
traveled extensively on many fact-finding trips to Cambodia,
Vietnam, Guatemala, Kosovo, Nepal, Nicaragua, Mozambique and in
January 2004 war-torn Baghdad.
Musicians today aspire to be able to record their music how and when
they want to, and hope they can make a long-standing respectable
career out of it. Bruce Cockburn does just that and has done so for
over 35 years. He has always remained true to himself, his music,
his values and his views.
Bruce will be presenting Alanis Morrisette with her Walk of Fame
Award on June 5th and is taking part in the White Ribbon Concert
(Ending Men's Violence Against Women) at The Phoenix Concert Hall in
Toronto on Tuesday, June 7.
