hey old school, thanks for sending this review to the list. it's really nice to read positive things about my old band once in a while.
If you're interested in knowing, Agitpop are currently finishing up a recording project we started 7 years ago. We're planning on whipping up a web site to sort all this information out and get it out to the public

I hear they're coming.
they started playing the college circuit in GB and are do on the West
Coast early May.
Anyone in the Eastern or Mid states hear if they's coming through?
That garage track was actually our first recording together. he
(guitar/singer) basically said "play something" and then he played
along. I don't know if he just made up words or what. I uploaded a
short track called wer.mp3
Let me know what you think of that.
the Gold track was okay, sounded like Blue Cheer, i guess that it
garage rock? have you heard the Inca Babies? I think I had a track in
the file section (it may still be there).

I downloaded your track and aside from the typical garage recording
quality it's not too bad. It has kind of a loungy stones feel. I
think I hear a lead in there somewhere but it's hard to tell. The
voice was kind of hard to pick out but I get the idea: kida
blues/rock. The drums have a good sound. They actually sound like
drums and not pots and pans. My band has had a terrible time
capturing the sound of our drums, however, my bassist, gino, went to
a couple of chat rooms and found out how to get a great recording in
a shitty place. His basement (where we play) takes sound and kills
it. We record through a mixer and the latest version of sonar and up
unitl a couple months ago, all of our recordings were almost
unbarable. I wish I could tell you the sites he went to to make
changes because all he did was move the microphones a few times and
our basement recordings improved 200%.
Anyway, I figured instead of simply talking shit I'd give you a track
of ours to check out. It's called Gold (as you can see in the files
folder)I apologize in advance if it doesn't work.
Six Stone Jugs are:
Gino - bass and bkg.vocals
Rob (me) - l vocals and r. guitar
Joe T. - l. guitar and bkg.vocals
Rex - drums and bkg.vocals
This group title grabbed my attention for a couple reasons. First
off, the obvious lack of people to talk about college music.
Secondly it fits into an idea I've been brewing (about garage rock
in general). I came up with the idea of putting a nationwide ad out
asking for home recordings of garage bands from all over the
country. If they're on reel to reel or four track, or whatever, have
them converted to cd (or cassette) and let me and my band sift
through and reproduce (new versions) for a 2 cd compilation. One
disk would be re-mastered recordings of the originals and the second
disk would be us (along with several musician friends) covering
them. I'm looking for bands from the 70's exclusively. More
specifically bands inspired by the stones, beatles, springsteen,
iggy pop, kiss, MC5, and so on. The bands would also have to produce
proof of their exsistance such as old press kits, flyers, t-shirts,
iron-ons, write-ups and such. All of it would be photographed and
collaged into the CD cover. Finally, the bands could never have
been signed or mass produced. I don't know... it's just an idea.
I want bands from the 70's because of my love for (what the chili
peppers referred to as "good time boys") bands from the 80's.
(fishbone, firehose, etc) Some of their inspiration must have been
drawn from the acts in their area. The bands they saw at bars or in
high school. (the kings of their town) What I mean is that we all
listen to signed bands and big time acts but I believe that a band's
true inspiration has to have a deep root in the local scene (if
there is one). If I could hear a band or two from Minneapolis that
was big in 1978/79 then maybe I could understand how soul asylum or
husker du managed to find their sound or who were they aspiring to
be as great as? (not sound like) just be as great. Like the way the
Doors wanted to be "as big as Love." (side note: Love is among the
greatest bands to have existed between 66' and 72' and they receive
almost no recognition today. They were the biggest band in L.A. when
the Doors were starting out).
I don't know... My band may play rock/alt country but I still look
back to My 3 Scum (a band I grew up paying 2 dollars to see in 1989
when I was 15) for inspiration and they were DK style punk.
Anyway... keep the messege board alive, right? What do you think?
I think I can... May take a day or two. I'm pretty sure I'll be able
to make the transfer from tape to computer. I should be able to
figure it out. thanks.
any way you can record this to MP3 and upload a sample in the file
section. If you need help getting a program to do this let me know.

13 years ago (August 1991) my life was changed by the discovery of a
radio program called the Progressive Top 20. I recognized some of
the bands from 120 minutes, but most were totally new to me. Carter
the Unstoppapble Sex Machine, The Blue Aeroplanes, King Missle,
Swervedriver: All of it blew me away. I had been a metal head for
years only dabbling in the Violent Femmes and Depeche Mode enough to
talk to the Cure chicks. Grunge hadn't hit yet. R.E.M. seemed old
and slow in comparrison to Soul Asylum's "Hang Time" album or Ned's
Atomic Dustbin's "Godfodder" but I stray from my point.
I have this song on cassette that I recorded off the countdown. I
have no idea who the band is. I've randomly purchased bands like
Happy Mondays, The Sundays, The Mighty Lemondrops, XTC, Erasure, The
Pixies, The Pouges, The Meat Puppets, Poster Children, Gang of Four
and so on. (again, I had been a metal head and had no idea who any
of these bands were.) Though I've grown to love several of them,
I've never found the one I was looking for. Thinking back on it, I
had a beautiful crash course in college music before it's demise.
All of this happened before Dave Matthews, Live and Blues Travelers
broke into the big time. They were all quirky little bands simmering
in the vat of alternative (no longer college) music.
The lyrics to the unknown song are as follows:
You gave me the love I thought I never had. I was so blind I think I
must have been mad. I'm really sorry yeah I'm really upset. I still
can tell you I can tell you yet. (CHORUS)I never told you just how
much you meant to me. I never told you just how much I cared.
The music is punchy like ned or dinasaur Jr (slightly softer) but
there's an acoustic guitar playing along with a heavily electric
lead sreaming with a ton of reverb. There's a breakdown at the end
where it's just the singer, building drums, and a faint lead. He's
repeating the chorus and then his voice is overdubbed talking and
then singing " I'll never leave you never leave you never leave you."
I've taken this song into record stores (with a walkman) I've played
it for djs over the phone, and I have asked everone on the planet
short of Matt Pinfield. I've also typed every possible name of this
song into Kazaa, KazaaLite, Napster, Winamp, etc. I typed the lyrics
into every search engine on the web. I looked up "the progressive
top 20 countdown" on-line. Hell, I even called the college radio
station to see if they had kept records of the countdown or formats
or anything. oddly enough!!! they did from 1995 forward!!! crazy. I
guess the computer boom inspired record keeping. I even tried to
look up the DJ who had played the stuff (duh, he used an on-air name)
and everyone who knew him is long gone. Regardless, I may come up
with a reward of some sort. Or you could...
I am open to all ideas and any discussion in general about who this
band could be or anything at all. It's hard to find a conversation
about smudge, clockhammer or firehose anymore.
