Now that I have your attention, yes it is true, FACE will not be at
Nissi's on August 5th because there will be another quality a cappella
group there that night.

Ignition! Quartet, one of Denver's premier barbershop a cappella
groups will be at Nissi's in a little less than 2 weeks. After a very
fun and successful night in April, We have been asked back for an
encore performance and are looking forward to seeing another great a
cappella crowd.

Ignition! has just returned from the Barbershop Harmony Society's
International competition in Nashville, TN where we were judged as one
of the top twenty quartets in the world.

So, if you love a cappella music, and you are looking for something a
little different than the wonderful all-vocal-rock sounds of FACE.
Please join us at Nissi's in August. We could try some vocal
percussion but we would just end up spitting all over ourselves.

Tickets are $8 in advance ($10 at the door) and can be purchased via
the websites below.

For more information about the venue please visit
www.nissis.com

For more information about Ignition! please visit

Thank you for your support

I think all of you who are in a cappella groups can gain something from checking out Deke Sharon's mid-summer guidance for college groups (in particular -- much applies to any avocational group).

He speaks from considerable experience, mentioning the "Bubs" which for those of us in the west, actually refers to the hugely successful "Beezlebubs" from Deke's alma mater, Tufts University.

Those of you layin' around trying to think of what may quick start the fall semester for your high school or college group could do you and your group a favor by making note of his comments at http://www.casa.org/content/view/1381/243/.

I'm sure he'll respond to specific questions also, if you have some.

Spread the word. k?

This has been announced in a few places over the past week, but I know that many of you did not receive it.  If you have already received, please excuse the redundancy.  I know that some of you will want to attend this, so I am sending this information as a special announcement.  Please visit either www.nexusqt.com or www.dap-online.com for further details.  Feel free to pass along to others you may know of who would be interested.

DAP and NeXus GET SHANGHAI’D!”

It has very recently been announced that Mark and Dianne Zenk (Bass and Soprano of the Denver a Cappella Project and bass of NeXus) have been made an offer they couldn’t refuse and will be transferred by Mark’s company to Shanghai! (Yes, CHINA).  While this is very sad news for the Denver a cappella community, it is an unbelievable opportunity for the Zenks and we wish them all the best as they depart Denver in early September.  Neither group has made a decision at this time as to their future plans but, this will certainly mean the speedy and untimely end of both of these outstanding groups as they exist today.

In response to an outpouring of requests from their many area family, friends and fans, they have decided to hold a joint “Farewell Concert”.  The concert will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. at the Colorado Community Church, 2220 S. Chambers Road, Aurora, CO 80014.  (This is a former theater, and a great concert venue, located on the NE corner of Iliff and Chambers).  A limited number of tickets, at $10.00 each, are available and can be securely purchased online with ANY credit card at either of the groups’ websites:  Visit http://www.dap-online.com , or http://www.nexusqt.com  for more details and instructions for ordering yours now.  For this special “not to be missed” performance, each group will perform a full “show set” – much of which has never been performed in the Denver area.  You won’t want to miss it!

A Cappellastock--Get Your Tickets Now!

Get ready for A Cappellastock, August 23rd, 8pm at the Ogden Amphitheater! We are more excited than ever as we are setting records with ticket sales. If you were one of the many who wondered how A Cappellastock could get any better after last year's show, hold on tight because we promise you another A Cappellastock experience that will knock your socks off!

Thanks to all of you, A Cappellastock has become the largest one-night concert of its kind. Now celebrating the fifth year, it has also become Ogden's largest outdoor concert of the year and is starting to draw many from out of state. Former bass of Rockapella Barry Carl said, "A Cappellastock does it right. This is a major league rock show with all the trimmings."

Lineup of groups for A Cappellastock include:

XRP  represents the former members of Rockapella. They kicked off the hit TV game show Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, and started the contemporary a cappella movement. The group has not performed together since 1991, but has decided to come together once more just for A Cappellastock.

Hi-Fidelity is one of the best musical comedy acts in the nation. Their tribute to the original Star Trek Show has won them appearances on X Box Commercials as well as the Last Call with Carson Daily as the joke explainers.

Tonic Sol Fa has sold more than one million CD's, appeared on a Christmas special with PBS, with Jay Leno and many other television personalities.

T Minus 5 is Ogden's own home-grown a cappella group and continue to perform throughout the West. We can't wait to play host again this year and share with you some truly amazing entertainment.

The Saltaires have been ranked in the top ten barbershop choruses internationally five times and were named by official declaration "The Cultural Ambassadors of the State of Utah" by Governor Michael O. Leavitt.  We are lucky to have them as our pre-show entertainment.

Revels auditions are almost here (August 23rd!).  If you, or anyone you
know, would love to be a part of our amazing Colorado Pioneer show this
year, please help spread the word and encourage them to audition! This
year is going to be a VERY SPECIAL REVELS year!

----------------------------------------

Rocky Mountain Revels, a non-profit performing arts organization
celebrating its 8th year in Boulder, is proud to kick off Boulder's
Sesquicentennial Celebration with its upcoming "A Pioneer Christmas"
show.  With 2009 ushering in the 150th anniversary of the founding of
Boulder, Nederland, Gold Hill, and Denver; the Boulder Sesquicentennial
Committee is planning a year-long celebration!

"A Pioneer Christmas" represents a remarkable community effort.  It
envisions a pioneer experience in a loosely woven story told through the
Revels traditions of music, dance and drama.  Over 50 community members
will appear on stage, and another 50 will be volunteering behind the
scenes backstage. Performances will be December 14th and 20th at the
historic Boulder Theater, rehearsals are every Monday evening from
September through December.

Some of the great American music we will be singing this year includes;

Shall We Gather at the River
  Bound for the Promised Land
  What Wondrous Love
  Cherry Tree Carol
  Bow and Be Simple
and...  a fabulous melodrama called "The Christmas Inn"
and.. poetry by Eugene Field, Carl Sandberg, and others

----------------------------------------

Auditions for Rocky Mountain Revels "A Pioneer Christmas" are on
Saturday, August 23rd at the Lutheran Atonement Church at 685 Inca
Pkwy., just off Baseline Rd. in central Boulder from 2-5 p.m. The
audition song should be a folk song or carol sung a cappella, it need
not be anything fancy.  You must be able to carry a tune, but you do not
have to be a trained singer.  Wanted:  large community cast of all ages
(7-70+) and varying experiences.

Hi everyone! Summer is drawing to a close, and with it we’re looking forward to some of our biggest shows yet: this coming Thursday at Boulder Theater with VOCO, and next Thursday at Flatirons! But before I get to that, a quick thank you: August 6th added to our growing list of memorable and amazing evenings. We want to thank the hundreds of you that waited not only for the rain, but also for the tornado to pass as well (although the paper the next day called it a gustnado, not a true tornado. I grew up in Kansas and have never heard of a gustnado). We were so touched that so many people were still around, that we found a corner in the art gallery and did a short “unplugged” set for everyone who stayed. If you were there, you know that it was a different kind of show, and a different kind of fun - once again, thanks so much for sticking it out with us. It really meant a lot! BOULDER THEATER THIS THURSDAY!!! It’s finally here! Our big show with Moira Smiley and VOCO at Boulder Theater is upon us. There are still tickets available, although the reserved sections are nearly sold out. We’ll have some new material to share with everyone, and of course we’re excited to introduce Moira and VOCO to Boulder. Hope to see you all there! Doors are at 6:30, the show starts at 7:30. Click here for tickets: http://www.bouldertheater.com FLATIRON CROSSING NEXT THURSDAY Then NEXT Thursday, August 28, in what has become one of our favorite traditions, we’re closing the Summer Concert Series at Flatiron Crossing. This is a free outdoor concert in The Village area, just outside the AMC Movie Theatres. We get to play from 6 to 9 pm, and it’s been a ton of fun the past few years. As always, check out our website for the full calendar and other great info! http://www.FaceVocalBand.com Cheers! - Mark - - - - - - - - - - - Mark Megibow Business Manager Face www.FaceVocalBand.com

Hi family, friends, and fans (you can pick whichever best describes you)!

THIS JUST IN:
m-pact is coming to town!

In just two weeks, Face will be sharing the stage with m-pact - we haven't had that opportunity in more than a few years, so we're STOKED. The show will be at Centaurus High School, where director Scott Wickham has been a huge supporter of a-cappella for years. m-pact will visit the school choirs earlier in the day, and then we'll both rock the stage at night.

If you're not familiar with m-pact (you SHOULD be!), they are former National Champs AND Audience Faves of the Harmony Sweeps. For over ten years now, they have toured the world, bringing their elite sound to thousands of people. For me personally, when I started with Face, m-pact was one of my early inspirations. Here's their website more more information: www.m-pact.com

Here are the details! Hope to see tons of you there!

Hello all fellow Colorado A Cappella friends!

I just wanted to let you know about a cool new group that is starting in Denver called 52eighty.  This group is going to be composed of singers all under 30 and our average age has to equal 25.  This is because of the rules of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Youth Chorus Competition that we are gearing up for over the weekend of January 28-31 in Pasadena, CAClick here for more information on the competition.  We are working on fundraising and all kinds of things right now as a leadership team to make sure we can bring as many people with us as possible.  Most (if not all) of our expenses on the trip will be covered by the Harmony Foundation, The Sound of the Rockies Chorus and through our own efforts of fundraising and the goal is that there are no expenses out of any of the pockets of our members

SO – if you meet the criteria, we’d like YOU to be a part of it!  If you have friends at your school who might be interested or know people to forward this email to PLEASE DO! See below for the leadership team’s contact information and please feel free to call me if you have other questions.  If you are interested, please send me an email to let me know and I will get your email address on our distribution group so you can receive information about our rehearsals, etc.

The first practice for 52eighty is going to be this next Saturday the 13th at St. Luke’s Presbyterian church off of C470 and Broadway. Exact address is 8817 S. Broadway, Highlands Ranch...  Practice will start at 10am and go till 2pm... Aside from singing, we're going to have time to hang out and have pizza for lunch.  If you're wondering what music we'll be singing, check out the members only site www.soundoftherockies.com/52eighty with username: guest and password: 52eighty (you may have to enter this twice)... on that website we have all the songs that we will be doing so far.  Some of them still need learning tracks but those will be up soon.  The songs that you need to focus on are ' If I Had My Way' 'Santa Baby ' and ' I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm' ... those will be the songs we'll be working on first.  You will also see a list of rehearsals there and more information about the shows we will be a part of prior to our competition.

Some familiar faces will be there.  Chris Vaughn, gold medal lead singer from the quartet Gotcha! will be the director and Travis Tabares along with the other members of Revolution will be singing in the chorus as well.  Bring your friends and any guys under 30 that you think would be interested. This is going to be a blast and, not something that you'll want to miss out on!!!  If you have any questions feel free to give myself, Brian, Chris, or Travis a call or email.  I will put all of our contact info at the bottom of this message.

P.S.  If you're having trouble with finding a ride or something, please don't hesitate to ask us for help.  I’m sure we will be able to find you a way down to practice.

Hope to see all of you there and thank you to anyone who is able to forward this on to someone who might be interested!!!!!

Hello Colorado singers,

Something's been happening in Colorado that looks promising. CVJS (and therefore, you folks) has been a member of what was called the Colo Music Assn for some time. Our rational was to alert a cappella and other pop singers about the music business that might provide opportunities for you all to fit into the Colorado music groove. The CMA has been a somewhat struggling organization that appears to be lifting itself up by its own energy to produce a new and exciting personality and vision for the future.

A new, clever name won't do it alone, but the energy and involvement expressed in their new newsletter, included below, bodes well for a stronger and more energetic platform for the music business (in which many of you are already involved) in the state and the Denver Metro area in particular. So, take a look at the info below and even go to the same old website (which also has an entirely new look), http://www.coloradomusic.org/index.cfm, and check out what's happening. I know many of the items below aren't your cups of tea (I usually sort and forward more specific items from their bulletin), but here's the whole banana to check out this time.

Remember that as a CVJS affiliate, you have the opportunity to participate as a member of this organization, so check them out and share what you find out with the rest of your associates here at the message board. I'll be at the September 21 meeting to see how it's all going to come together. Let me know if you're up for that and we can have a singers' caucus on hand to let them know it ain't all brass and drums. Okay?

A Cappella Dreaming: 10 Voices, One Shot by MICKEY RAPKIN; October 3, 2008

The a cappella group Straight No Chaser has taken a not-so-straight path to a five-album recording contract. The members, now mostly in their 30s, began singing in the act while undergraduates at Indiana University.

TEN years ago, the founding members of Straight No Chaser — an undergraduate a cappella group from Indiana University — performed at Carnegie Hall. They sang the national anthem at a Chicago Cubs game. They took road trips, ensnared female fans and created a lasting tradition on campus. And then they graduated.

Save for the odd wedding or college reunion, these men had not sung together with any regularity since. Until 2008, when Craig Kallman, the chairman and chief executive of Atlantic Records, offered the 10-man group a five-album record deal.

This may be the year’s most unlikely major-label story.

David Roberts, 31, a project manager for a Midtown bank, was sitting in his cubicle in January when he got the call. Michael Itkoff, also 31, a sales rep for a medical-device company, was at home in Atlanta. Jerome Collins, 32, was in Hong Kong starring as Simba in a theme-park production of “The Lion King.”

“We thought it was a joke,” Mr. Itkoff said. “But Atlantic flew us to New York and put us up at the ‘Dream’ hotel. There was a fruit plate in my hotel room. They were talking about a tour with Josh Groban or Michael Bublé. I thought, are you kidding me?”

Mr. Kallman — like nearly eight million others — discovered Straight No Chaser on YouTube in December, through a 1998 video of the group performing an unlikely riff on “The 12 Days of Christmas” (a riff that incorporated snippets of everything from “I Have a Little Dreidel” to Toto’s “Africa”). Randy Stine, an original member, had uploaded the clip strictly for the group’s own amusement, but it quickly went viral.

“We thought the attention would die down after the New Year,” said the group’s founder, Dan Ponce, 31, now a reporter for ABC News in Chicago.

But Mr. Kallman smelled a potential holiday crossover hit in the vein of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, a metal band famous for playing Christmas music in large, sold-out arenas. That band has sold more than five million albums, and last year it played a 90-city tour that grossed more than $45 million.

“We’re at a time when we’re entertained by air-guitar video games and reality competitions about hairstyling, dressmaking and grocery bagging,” Mr. Kallman said in a telephone interview. “Straight No Chaser was this organic YouTube sensation. The idea is to develop an act with real resonance for the holiday season and build a brand in the a cappella arena.”

Major labels have flirted with a cappella groups before. R&B acts like the Persuasions had been signed to the majors in the 1970s before moving to smaller labels in recent years. In 2005, Tonic Sol-fa, an a cappella quartet out of Minneapolis, was briefly signed to Vivaton Records (a division of Sony), but the label folded a week before the group’s album hit shelves. At the height of the 1990s boy-band boom, an a cappella group called 4:2:Five (featuring a young Scott Porter of NBC’s “Friday Night Lights”) met with Sony, but when the executives suggested adding backing tracks and choreography, the members walked.

That kind of tinkering is perhaps understandable. While there are more than 1,200 collegiate a cappella groups in the United States, according to estimates from the Contemporary a Cappella Society of America, mainstream attitudes toward the genre are not kind. A cappella is regularly mocked on screen, notably on the NBC comedy “The Office” and recently in the Will Ferrell film “Step Brothers.” Still, Mr. Kallman was not deterred. He did not want to hide that these men were an a cappella group. Rather, he hoped to embrace it.

“Group harmony is in the air,” he said. “ ‘Jersey Boys’ is a worldwide phenomenon. The ‘Mamma Mia!’ soundtrack is Number 1.” With Straight No Chaser, Atlantic is aiming for the mass audience that made Mr. Groban’s “Noël” the top-selling album of 2007.

Perhaps the idea of a major-label a cappella Christmas hit isn’t so far-fetched. “Once in a while a fresh Christmas album breaks through and has a chance of becoming a perennial seller,” said Jay Landers, senior vice president of A&R at Columbia Records, an Atlantic competitor. “Josh Groban and Mannheim Steamroller will continue to sell for years. A cappella might be considered a niche signing, but if the repertoire is fresh and accessible, then it could work.”

And so a Straight No Chaser album, “Holiday Spirits,” is due out Oct. 28 on Atlantic’s Atco imprint. The album is a collection of 12 Christmas classics (and two original holiday tunes), including a live version of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” (Richard Gregory, 76, now a retired music teacher in Massachusetts, wrote the original comic arrangement of the traditional carol while serving in the Navy in the 1950s. It became a staple of the Princeton Nassoons, and Straight No Chaser added its own funny flavor.)

There may even be a reality show on the horizon. Mark Burnett of the “Survivor” franchise, Jesse Ignjatovic, the executive producer of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, and Atlantic are shopping a competition show featuring Straight No Chaser that is tentatively titled “A Cappella Nation.”

Look at what’s working in the reality space — family-friendly entertainment,” Mr. Burnett said. “There’s no way this is not a big hit. It’s great music. It’s fun for the whole family.”Skip to next paragraph

The Straight No Chaser “12 Days of Christmas” video had a certain kitsch appeal, what with 10 men harmonizing to “I Have a Little Dreidel.” But the eight million people who clicked on it were also likely responding to the genuine, unironic enjoyment plastered across the members’ faces; the video begged to be forwarded.

But the trick was capturing that energy on disc. Straight No Chaser — the name was inspired by the Thelonious Monk composition — began album rehearsals in March, and the first day was surreal. “It was like we were right back in the senior year of college, and we were going over music for a show at a sorority house,” Mr. Itkoff said. “It was like no time had passed.”

Except time had passed — nearly a decade. Mr. Itkoff, the medical-device salesman, was married now and had to convince his wife that frequent trips to New York (and whatever might come next) would not upend their life in Atlanta. They’d recently had a baby, and his wife had stopped working. “Her biggest worry was that I’d leave her for months at a time, with no income and a child.”

For a similar reason, one original member, Patrick Hachey — a high school music teacher in New Jersey with three kids and a wife — declined to join the reunion. (Another original member, who had fallen out with others in the group, was not asked to join, and the slots were filled with two younger alumni. The group has had several lineups at Indiana University.)

Most of the album was recorded over two weeks in July in Bloomington, Ind. Steve Lunt of Atlantic, an industry A&R veteran who has worked with Britney Spears and ’N Sync, was brought on to produce.

Though they were recording for a major label, the budget was conservative. Not counting travel and other expenses, they spent roughly $20,000 on recording.

Mr. Lunt flew to Bloomington twice to put his stamp on the project. “Collegiate a cappella is intentionally goofy and tongue-in-cheek and ironic,” he said. “But there’s a thin line between goofy and stupid, and goofy and funny.”

The members of Straight No Chaser understand Mr. Lunt’s concern, and they are in on the joke — to a point. “It’s great to see a cappella lampooned on shows like ‘30 Rock,’ ” Mr. Stine said. “We laugh at a cappella along with everyone else. Clearly it doesn’t have the coolest reputation. Maybe we can change that.”

Still, Mr. Lunt refers to the finished project as “Beach Boyz II Men,” a comment that highlights the inherent marketing challenge. “This is a 10-piece, slightly overgrown college vocal band,” he said. “We’re trying to catch lightning in a bottle. We’re swimming upstream. There are a lot of mixed metaphors here. But the genuine enthusiasm you feel from these guys is infectious.”

Despite the excitement of a major-label deal, most of the group members have kept quiet about it until now. “We had to protect our jobs,” Mr. Itkoff said. “We’re not 19 anymore. But it was like leading a double life.”

With the album’s release approaching, it is hard for the members not to daydream. To that end, Mr. Stine recently quit his day job, in part because he couldn’t get two weeks off to record the album but also because he hopes the project will have legs. Mr. Roberts, the Manhattan finance guy, is more conservative. “The economics in the group are tough,” he said. “There are 10+ mouths to feed here, and any money will be split 10 ways.”

Mr. Kallman of Atlantic described the project as “low risk.” He signed Straight No Chaser to what is called a 360-degree deal, meaning Atlantic will share in potential revenue from merchandise, concert tours, even ring tones. The group was given a very small advance (basically just enough money to cover recording costs), and it will take a “standard cut of net sales,” according to Mr. Ponce. “We’re happy with the deal.”

There’s a distinct possibility, all involved agree, that this excitement could disappear as suddenly as it arrived. “We’re talking about a cappella,” Mr. Roberts said. “Let’s be honest.”

But if the scene in Bloomington is any indication, perhaps there is hope for an a cappella Christmas hit. On one of the last nights of recording, the boys were out celebrating, playing a drinking game called Sink the Bismarck at an old haunt. There was a bachelorette party a few tables over. A member of Straight No Chaser was making small talk when one of the women — an Indiana University alumnus — interrupted him.

“Are you the original members of Straight No Chaser?” she asked. And then she screamed.

52eighty. We're Denver's newest men's youth a cappella chorus. Made up of some of the most talented young men from the Barbershop Harmony Society and other vocal groups from the Rocky Mountain region. Singing all styles of music from barbershop and vocal jazz to choral and chamber music. This is one group that you will not want to miss out on.  Composed of singers all under 30 our average age has to be equal or lesser to 25, according to the competition’s rules.  The Barbershop Harmony Society’s Youth Chorus Competition that we are getting ready for will be over the weekend of January 28-31 2008 and will be held in Pasadena, CA. Most (if not all) of our expenses on the trip (as well as suits and misc. expenses)  will be covered with help of private benefactors, the Harmony Foundation, The Sound of the Rockies Chorus, The Rocky Mountain District and through our own efforts of fundraising and the goal is that there are no expenses out of any of the pockets of our members.  If you or any person or organization you know might be interested in supporting this group, please contact Mike Davidson at mike@... or 303.912.0461.  Your generosity and support is very much appreciated.

Hi everyone!

Face is excited to announce that, after last year’s overwhelming success, we will return to Boulder Theater for a special holiday show. Because last year’s show sold out by Thanksgiving (we’re still a little stunned by that!), the good people at Boulder Theater are allowing us to do TWO shows this year, so we’re hoping there will be plenty of tickets to go around this time!

The two dates are December 16 (Tuesday) and December 19 (Friday), and tickets are available on Boulder Theater’s website (www.bouldertheater.com) as well as at any Face performance between now and then. More details are listed below.

If you haven’t been to a Face holiday show, we perform a healthy amount of holiday classics, and as with our regular repertoire, all of the arrangements are of our own design so it still maintains our all-vocal rock sound. We also perform plenty of our “usual stuff” and there are some brand-new arrangements in the works that we’re planning to unleash at those shows, so they will truly be special evenings all around.

Each show will have slightly different “pre-show entertainment” that begins shortly after the doors open. Tuesday’s pre-show artist has yet to be determined, but for the Friday show, the stage will be graced by the Dueling Piano Players, Brian Juan and Mike Cappo, formerly of The Reef here in Boulder.

Here are the details. Hope to see a bunch of you there!

Face All-Vocal Holiday Rock
Where: Boulder Theater
Date(s): December 16 and 19
Times: Doors at 6:30, pre-show entertainment at 6:45, Face at 7:30
Price: $15 General Admission, $8 Students and Seniors
Ticket Sales: www.BoulderTheater.com
We will also have tickets for sales at all of our performances between now and then.
