Hi everyone!

“Spring is sprung, the grass is ris’
I wonder where the flowers is.
Birds on the wing –
Now ain’t that absurd?
I thought the wing was on the bird!”

Thankfully, that is NOT one of our new songs.

If you want to listen to what we’re REALLY up to, come hear us this spring. See details below!

Cheers! - Mark

The LoDo Air Band comes to the Bolder A Cappella Series on Monday night for two shows of aerial a cappella acrobatics, accuracy and acumen! With a little audience amazement along the way.

This venerable Colorado vocal group hits the Redfish Brewhouse next Monday, landing on stage for a first set at 7:30pm and a second show at 9. They are making their second repeat showing at Redfish in as many years, having first been featured in the opening month of the series in January 2002. Boulder fans love them and keep coming back to see what's new in their ever changing acoustic itinerary.

If you enjoy good contemporary a cappella, along with a family atmosphere enriched by great food and drink, make your way to Boulder's Redfish next Monday evening, May 12. There a great music room awaits, with excellent sight lines and super sound, all without cover or minimum. Redfish is downtown on 13th Street a half block north of the Pearl Street Mall. Reservations available at 303-440-5858.

Just do it.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to drop a quick note to say thank your for all of your
support and to give some details to those of you who might be
interested in knowing about the recent Harmony Sweepstakes National
Finals (or should it be International Finals?). Alas, we didn't win,
but the competition was fierce. Actually, it was the best field of
talent ever, according to some who have attended the event since its
inception nineteen years ago! We believe it too! Every group was
excellent. The Australian group, The Idea of North, took home top
honors. They are a mixed quartet that has been touring the globe for
ten years now. Clean, tight and highly polished would be the best way
to describe them. We highly recommend their CD for you vocal jazz
fanatics out there. You can visit their website at:
http://www.idea.com.au

As for us, we were happy with our performance overall and received a
good response the audience and from all the other groups.
Unfortunately, we drew the short straw and had to open the show,
which had definite disadvantages. But on the positive side, we were
able to kick back and enjoy all the other awesome groups after our
set was done. All in all, it was great fun and a fantastic learning
experience and we are looking forward to hosting next year's regional
Sweeps.

With our intense preparation for the sweeps our CD project was put on
a temporary hold but we have now gone back full throttle and hope to
have it available very soon. We will also keep you posted about
upcoming summer concerts. You are welcome to visit our website to
check it out as well at:
www.groovesociety.org
We'll be kicking it all off at Redfish on June 2nd at 7:30pm. We hope
to see each and every one of you there! Take care and thanks once
again for supporting a cappella!!!

Sincerely,
Joe & Bianca Herbert

To Colorado FOCS fans:

Just wanted to thank everyone for showing us such a warm welcome to Colorado last month.  We had a great time at Westminster, Chatfield and Fairview. And the Redfish gig was definitely a highlight of the tour (food like that is hard to find :-).  Check out pictures of the shows online at www.focs.com.  Just click on the PHOTOS link.

And, because  we had such a good time, we had to come back.  So, tell all your friends -

Hello a cappella fans,

The Groo-oo-oove we're talkin' about here is the Groove Society (pictured below). Featured in the Bolder Boulder harmony series last season, they have since won the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes and returned to the area earlier this month from wowing the crowds at the National Harmony Championships in San Francisco.

Those of you who caught their sets last time will know what a great job they do with their original songs, as well as a lot of material from recent and vintage pops, R&B, rock and jazz.. You won't want to miss this great evening:

This Monday, June 2
7:30 and 9pm
Redfish Brewhouse
(on 13th, north of the Pearl Street Mall)

There's no admission or cover. What there is includes great sight lines, accoustics, food and brews in a friendly family atmosphere. Yeah! It's Win-Win and Win again if you enjoy great contemporary a cappella music.

Come on out Monday night and enjoy yourselves. You may want to call for a reservation. There are a lot of Groove Society fans out there waiting to hear them again: 303-4405858. Steve Shenk, the owner, will see that you have a great evening.

And here's a photo of Groove Society to share with your family and friends.

Were you at Redfish Monday evening?

If so, did you enjoy the
Groove Society as much as I did?

Wow, they've come a long way in the last 6 months. They were polished and entertaining Monday night and had the vocal jazz idiom down perfectly. The generous audience seemed to enjoy every minute.

Okay, where will you be Monday, June 16?

We hope you'll be at Boulder's Redfish to enjoy Groove Society's most recent competition for the top Rocky Mountain region vocal band out there. It's time to face the music of
face!

This 6-guy group has also grown a lot since their last Bolder A Cappella appearance in the fall. They are on the way to real success. I think you'll have a ball with their wide ranging repertoire of pop, rock, jazz and even classical selections. Don't miss
face at Redfish on Monday, June 16. Shows at 7:30 and 9pm.

We'll remind you when the date gets closer, but put it on the calendar right now, so you won't wish you hadn't missed them.

Meanwhile, three cheers for Groove Society and their skillful arrangements and great voices. Can't wait until they finish their first CD this summer.

Always some great a cappella happening on every other Monday night at Redfish, on 13th, north of the Mall in Boulder.

Here's an event that may interest you, even though not much of it is likely to be a cappella. Marguerite is a wonderful vocalist and will likely lead a well trained vocal group. Notice she is also looking for men's voices, so you guys may want to check this out.

Sunday, June 8, 4:30,  216 S. Grant (Methodist Church Arts Center) -
Denver
Marguerite Juenemann's Colorado Jazz Workshop Performance

An eight voice vocal ensemble over piano, bass and drums, singing and swinging everything from Basie to James Taylor to gospel. In short, just plain good, strong vocalizing in 4 part harmony with some improv.

The group is always open to new members and we could surely use some guys.

Announcement from the acappella news listserve. Anyone thinking of a move to the Windy?

Chicago based group, Stripped, is all set to hear some more auditions for Basses with mad skills.

We're looking for a real bass who has good reading skills and a nice blend. We are a Soul/Rock/R&B group who need a bass (21-30 age range) that can throw down his sounds and mix it with some nice Vocal Percussion as well.

If you're interested in auditioning, drop me an email at
<strippedsean@...>  or come to our website www.breakingboundaries.org/stripped.htm.

Hey, if you're close to Chicagoland, you can come on down to our next gig which is at Roosevelt University's Herman Crown Center on June 23rd.

Yeah, let's FACE it. These guys are the up-and-coming Boulder area group that won Runner-Up status at the spring RM Harmony Sweeps.

They'll also a lot of good musical fun.

What? You haven't decided what to do tonight? You know it's supposed to rain out your after work hike, right? So, why not plan right now to sit in on "FACE's" number 1 show at 7:30, or the second show at 9pm -- or both.

That's Boulder's Redfish  Brewhouse, family fun and great a cappella music. Good refreshment, accoustics and sight lines in the comfortabel music room for about 90 of you, so join us. No admission; just good entertainment.

Wow, what a show FACE put on last night in Boulder. They had a packed and very enthusiastic audience. And they had the time of their show biz lives, I think -- based on their excitement and response to the welcoming crowd. Watch for them in your area. They will bring smiles to -- whatelse -- your face.

Now we have 2 more weeks of Redfish a cappella before the summer hiatus. Next Monday, of course, is Five O'Clock Shadow, coming all the way from Boston to treat us with a return performance. They knocked the socks off of Boulder folks last April 14 when they opened the spring series of Bolder A Cappella . Now they're back -- on their own -- but dying to do Redfish again, with its savvy and enthusiastic audience, they (and you) will have a ball. And if you can't catch them Monday in Boulder, stop by Tuesday, June 24 at LoDo's Soiled Dove, where they'll make their first Denver appearance in many years. More later in the week.

Finally, on Monday June 30th, we'll say hello to the 5 guys from Fort Collins called "Curious Gage." Want to know what that means? Well, besides great a cappella, I have no idea, but I'm sure the audience that night will find out. So, plan on one last Bolder A Cappella show on the last day of the month, before summer takes over and we have to wait awhile for a cappella to warm up the Monday evenings at Redfish.

Just do it.

Established, performance a cappella quartet is looking to replace
the 1st soprano or "tenor" spot. Denver-metro area; non-smoker,
willing to travel to Evergreen once a week for rehearsals and work
extensively during the Christmas holiday. Ideal candidate would
have sung a cappella harmony with other performance groups in the
style of jazz, blues or barbershop. Appropriate age to fit group
would be 25 - 45 and be able to fit into costumes (size 4 - 10)
though vocal production certainly supercedes this criteria. Tenor
would be required to join SAI to compete in Regional Sweet Adelines
competitions, though concentration of repertoire does not focus on
barbershop. A background in theater or dance a plus.

I hope you have Monday and/or Tuesday on your calendar to catch FOCS while they're back in the Denver area.

It promises to be a great show as always and this time you have two chances to catch Five O'Clock Shadow..

Monday, June 23 at Redfish Brewhouse in Boulder. Better make a reservation or plan to sit in the back. Last Monday night was packed for FACE. The FOCS shows are at 7:30 and 9pm. Redfish is on 13th a half block north of the Pearl Street Mall.

Tuesday, June 24 at The Soiled Dove in LoDo. Great little theater style club where FOCS will do one show at 8pm. Doors open at 7pm. The Dove is on Market just south of 20th.

These are not CVJS sponsored shows, so there will be an admission charge, but it's only $5 at the door.

These shows are a great opportunity to hear one of the premiere CAC groups in the country. Hope to see you enjoying some a cappella next week. This is where it's at.

I don't know the Dove's (or LoDo's) rules, but I would think accompanied minors in any case can get in. Better to check first hand with the Dove at 303-299-0100.

Redfish is definitely open, but guests are carded in the music room if they order. I recommend making a reservation by phone -- 303-440-5858 -- so you can be sure to get a good seat. The second show will probably be less crowded.

Enjoy!

Hello folks,

It's that time again. Time for your input for the Summer Colorado Songster newsletter. While we try to gather a lot of dates and info ourselves, please don't take for granted that your info will get in the newsletter without your input. We WILL publish any dates in Colorado that you send us, so let's have it! Read on:

The Colorado Vocal Jazz Society supports CASA activities in Colorado, helping with projects like the National Championship of Collegiate A Cappella and the Harmony Sweepstakes. We also sponsor special vocal jazz and contemporary a cappella events, maintain a website for CASA-In-Colorado and publish a quarterly newsletter for CVJS members and Colorado members of CASA. Frankly, this is all made possible completely by volunteer effort and funds provided by CD sales of one of your colleague groups, the New Wizard Oil Combination, as well as modest outside contributions to our non-profit foundation, CVJS.

The next issue of the Colorado Songster goes to press at the end of this month and will be distributed by mail in early July. You should have received the previous issue in April (if we have your accurate snailmail address; if not, send it!). In addition, we try to funnel dates and information to CASA's International Newsletter (the CAN) which is published bi-monthly. We need your help to keep all this information flowing.

If you have Colorado-based events/concerts for July thru Sep/Oct which should be listed in the Songster calendar and the CAN or are worthy of a feature article in either, please email the pertinent info to the following by these deadlines:

for the CAN: June 25!
for the CO Songster: June 28!

Please send listings for the CAN to jessika@...
Please send your Colorado Songster information to info@cvjs.org.
Event listings should be in the following format:

Day(s), Date(s): time(s)
Program and/or Group Name
Venue name, City; admission?

CAN Associate Editor Thomas King and I would also like to receive your news briefs (CD releases, group member changes, births, marriages, media appearances and any other cool news). Send them these items to info@... and to acappellanews@...

If you are interested in advertising in either the CAN (worldwide distribution) or the Songster (600+ Colorado subscribers), send your proposal or inquiry to me at info@... or to CAN Advertising Manager Brian Michaels at cool.jock@...

And, finally, please send any other interesting articles and news notes to me at info@... or to the CAN at
EditorCAN@...
In addition, our Songster publishes a classified section briefly announcing audition or membership opportunities as well as individual interests in a cappella participation. Listings are also due by July 28. Please send them in the following format:

Auditions:
What parts are needed for type/size of group
Group name, brief details
Contact name, phone, email

Interests:

Send in the picture!!! ....Gave your dog a haircut just like Stacks?...( you should be ashamed of yourself, but...) HEY, SEND IN THE PICTURE!! (please nobody do that though, ok) The more creative they are the better the chances of seeing it featured on the site. Now this is a new idea so lets give it a couple weeks at least before we pick a winner. Please email any pics to photos@... as soon as you can and we'll check em out whike we're on the road. THANKS!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

PLAY THE FOCS MOVIE TRIVIA GAME AND WIN FREE TICKETS!!!

Here are the rules;

1) Figure out which movies the quotes are from.

2) Be the first person to email oren@... with the right answers. (To avoid getting TOO swamped with emails, let's say no entries will be accepted more than 24 hours after the update has been sent)

3) The winner will be given free tickets to any show that was promoted on the email update with those quotes!

(To try and give as many people a shot at some free tickets as possible, let's just say it's one win per person. However, if you win but can't use the tickets for that show after all, you WILL be eligible to win another time.)

NOTE - Different numbers denote different characters speaking within the scene.

MOVIE NUMBER ONE
”A man in a really nice camper wants to put our song on the radio. Give me the pen, I'm signing, you're signing, we're all signing!”

MOVIE NUMBER TWO
”Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes, and they let me use explosives, okay?”

MOVIE NUMBER THREE
1) “I want to spend the night with you.” 2) “You mean sleep over? Well, ok, but I get top bunk!”

MOVIE NUMBER FOUR
” Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being in love which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.”

MOVIE NUMBER FIVE
1) “What did you do that for?” 2) “It doesn't matter it’s in the past.” 1) “Well it hurt.” 2) “Yes the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can run from it or... learn from it.” (tries to hit him with the stick and he ducks)... “There see!!"

MOVIE NUMBER SIX
” All you need is for one person to think you're cool, and you're in.”

GOOD LUCK!!!

Newcomers Curious Gage have finally put up their very
own website! For those who haven't heard the Gage's
unique sound (and right now, that's pretty much
everyone) this is a good chance to see what they're
all about. While the site is a little bare at the
moment, it will at least give a glimpse into the
insanity that is Curious Gage before our big breakout
concert next monday (June 30th, Redfish Brewery in
Boulder, CO).

Make sure to check out the website at
www.curiousgage.com, and don't forget to sign the
guestbook! ;)

Hope to see you all at the Redfish next monday!

What is Curious A Cappella? ------------ I have no idea.

What is the a cappella group "Curious Gage?"

Webster's says "gage" is a "pledge" or a "challenge." It's also what the French call the glove used to slap the guy(gal?) you want to duel with.

Okay. That means Monday night these guys from CSU territory are gonna pledge to sing better than "FACE" or "Groove Society" and they consider it a challenge to do so, and if folks from those other groups show up, these five guys may throw a glove at them (musically speaking of course).

If I were you I wouldn't miss that scene for anything. The guys in "CG" do have some DNA from a great group preceding them called Tangent, fierce competitors in the Harmony Sweeps awhile back, so if I were one of you avid a cappella (AAC) fans out there, I would want to trundle on over the Redfish Brewhouse before 7:30pm to see what they're all about. I'm enclosing a picture of some of "CG" enjoying FOCS (5 O'clock Shadow) in their special show last Monday at Redfish.

Besides, it's THE LAST SHOW IN THE SPRING BOLDER A CAPPELLA SERIES! (appropriate because spring left us last week) You don't get any more of this good stuff here until September -- unless you copy down some of the hot dates (calendar type) I'm sending out in the Colorado Songster shortly.

So, make your way to Redfish for one last spring a cappella fling. Monday -- last day of June: 7:30 and 9pm. No cover (Steve is picking up the tab -- not your tab though <g>), good acoustics, great food and beer, a family crowd -- all there to hear your kinda music. 13th Street north of the Mall in Boulder. Call 303 440 5858 to reserve a few spaces.

Hope to seeya there. Support your kinda music. C'mon down.

Attachements:
1) Curious Gage & friends enjoy FOCS @ Redfish

2) FOCS's Mike (don't call me Mikey) and Oren (don't call me Utah) do it (duet)

I guess the Subject says it all?! We are 3 looking for the 4th. We
have a performance on the 31st of July to sing the national anthem @
a Sky Sox game. And then our Bass seemed to get too busy for us.We
can go either way as far as a Tenor or a Bass. Did I mention that 2
of us own and operate a recording studio? We are all 3 songwriters as
well and have a POP/R&B album ready to record. So there is more to
this than just being a singer in a wannabe group.. we are ready to
GO>>!

I have to recommend this site most highly. I too recently saw a
television show for the company listed at:
http://www.wrldofproducts.com I checked out their website and decided
to join. Using this absolutely incredible program I have been able to
slash our families groceries bills by about 70% each week! In fact
just this past weekend I purchased $ 197.94 worth of groceries and
only had to pay $ 13.22! This thing allows you to get just about
everything in the supermarket for pennies on the dollar. I feel sorry
for the supermarkets with programs like these. The company also has
an entire network of sites offering different types of savings. This
can be found at: http://www.networkofsavings.com They also operate
The Wholesale Mall of America where they offer over 68,000 items at
below wholesale prices. I was a little confused about the mall, you
have to click on log in and then register from the log in screen.
registration is free and once registered you may purchase anything
you wish. The mall website is at: http://wproducts.mygiftparty.com
This is truly a one stop for all your savings place.
