Hey everyone,

Apparently Regis College has a Thursday night series called Thursday
Thrills where they bring in different acts to entertain. My Cousin
called me and told me They would really like to start incorporating
more a cappella into this series but they don't really know where to
look. I told them I would post a note to see if any groups were
interested in brushing up their skills or making a little extra cash.
They did say it paid but I did not get a figure. It is on Thursday
nights (obviously), and you would have to do about an hour set. I
don't know much more at this point. I am trying to find out if there
is a sound system or not and I am waiting on some contact info. I
think it is great to have another possible location for groups to
perform and college students tend to be a very good audience.

If anyone is interested please send me an email for now and as soon
as I get the contact info I will email you back. Or you can send me
your contact info and I will pass it on.

Thanks

Dan

Okay, folks,

If you live in southern Colorado, here's your chance to do something great for a cappella and have a lot of musical fun in the process.

I have been trying to identify someone in the Colorado Springs general area or the southern region of our state to be our eyes and ears down there. We have area ambassadors in the west, central and north areas, but need to find someone in the south to help the rest of us get a handle on what's happenin' down there. I also need someone to assist with a project involving the upcoming CMEA at the Broadmoor.

I have tried to get 3 different contacts down there to help, but for perfectly valid reasons of health, job conflict and travel, they simply haven't been able to commit to this.

If any of you can spare a little time and energy for Colorado A Cappella, I would be very grateful. Please call me at 1-800-203-8745 (my biz phone) and I'll explain what we'd like to accomplish. You would be doing your singer friends a great service.

Gimme a call, okay? Or send me an email at rjsharette@....

Thanks folks,

Hey all,

I'm new to Colorado and new to this group, but I'm not new to a
cappella! I'm interested in joining or starting a group based in the
Denver/Boulder area (I live in Boulder).

My ideal group would be a 5-person, rock-oriented vocal band
performing self-arranged songs with a mix of originals. I'd like to
rehearse 1-2 times per week and gig about twice a month, on average.
I'd love to record an album.

I sing bass, and I can also sing baritone or VP. I started with a
cappella in college. Afterward, I co-founded and musically directed
The Humbuckers, a 5-man, semipro vocal band based in Washington, DC.
The group sang about 70 shows over three years, recorded an album
that was well-reviewed by RARB, made some dough, and otherwise had a
great time before breaking up amicably. I ran sound for Cartoon
Johnny, another DC-based group, for six months before moving to
Boulder. I'm an album reviewer for RARB.

If you're interested in starting a group or auditioning me, please
send an email to davetrendler@... (remove ".nospam").

Thanks!

Hi,

Got this notice from the guy who wrote the a cappella article in the Christian Chronicle that Rol sent a note about a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately our group is not going to be able to apply for this engagement even though we're from Longmont, but I thought maybe it would fit another group out there.

Cheers!

We are an Event Planning and Management Company that is putting together a private function for one of our clients.  This function is currently scheduled to be held in the Longmont, Colorado area on Saturday evening, 12/6/03.  We are looking for an Acappella Group that can focus in on holiday-themed music (but not too Christmas-y) and can perform from approximately 6:45 - 9:30 PM.

Providing that you're available on this date and to be considered, please let us know what your best "agency" rates (to us) would be and "why" we should hire your Group..

When e-mailing us...and THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT…..because we handle so many different events.....please state the date and location of this Event in the Subject area of your follow-up e-mail or, you can cut and paste the following into the Subject area of your e-mail to us -  Acappella Group for Longmont, CO on 12/6/03.

Lastly, if you're not available, but can recommend another appropriate Acappella Group that can meet the above criteria and be in somewhat close proximity to the event location - we would appreciate your e-mailing us with their contact info.....Please no phone calls at this time.

As we are a VERY busy agency…….this would be a great way for us to get to know you AND your talents for future bookings as well!

Hey Colorado a cappellists!

Thought some of you might enjoy reading this message from a new CASA Ambassador in Sweden. He's ready to get things done there, and with assets like "The Real Group" helping, should find lots to do.

Read all about the trials and tribulations of a cappella groups in Sweden and you'll find many "been there done that" things to relate to.

Almost exclusively choir singing, which was great; I got to travel a lot both in the boys choir and with my class choir, performed at the opera when they needed kids and even did some recording and TV/radio stuff.
>
> In 1999 I and some friends of mine started the vocal group VeryEight. Although most of us were still singing in choirs by that time, we felt that it would be nice to do something else for awhile. We had the intention that we would sing both jazz and classical, but when we started working on Swingle Singers arrangements and other things in that genre, there wasn't time for anything else!
>
> We have been struggling on for almost five years now, with all the troubles it means to be 8 people with somewhat different ambitions and with all the joy that comes with singing with talented people that you've known for long and that you have a great time with. We have been trying to become more "pro" in the sense that we have put together some PR material to use when we approach management people and organizers. It's not easy, but things are starting to get better for us, and hopefully we will soon be able to book gigs on a more regular basis.
>
> Since we are an amateur group (we only rehearse once a week normally) we are not that dependent on incomes at the moment, but we are currently looking for our own place to rehearse at, and then we suddenly got some expenses to cover. It is going to be exciting to see what happens to us during next year!

At that time I also wrote a couple of email to CASA to see if there they/you got any ideas about it and maybe if they had got any email addresses that I could use. I never got any reply on those emails though.
>
> During this year I also got to know Bill Hare through some technical discussions on rmac. Sometime late this summer he wrote that he planned to come to Europe and asked me if I knew any vocal groups in my area that might be interesting for him to meet. I was glad to be of some help, and when he visited us for a weekend in the beginning of October he had a workshop with us in VeryEight, met a girl from a Swedish vocal jazz group called Vocation, and also got to meet Peder Karlsson in the Real Group's studio. Bill also jumped in as our soundman on small gig we had that weekend (where all the fuses went at the same time we went on stage ;-)), and it was after this gig I was asked to join you guys.
>
> I'm really excited about this and I have a feeling that though it will take some time, vocal groups in Sweden will really benefit in the long run. It wasn't until I searched for email addresses to vocal groups (to tell them about the internet forum) that I found out about a lot of groups, and when I approached them almost everyone seemed grateful that something was happening in this area. My first goal is to try and get people to understand that they have everything to gain from cooperating instead of doing their own isolated thing. The forum isn't really cooking yet, but I have my hopes up and I know it takes time to establish a forum like that.
>
> Just the other day I sent out my first newsletter, mostly because of the Idea of North concert. (Idea of North won the 2003 International Harmony Sweepstakes) Since I haven't really gotten started with the CASA stuff, it isn't "branded", but next newsletter will be, I promise! I will forward the newsletter to you so you could have a look at it yourselves. If you don't know Swedish it will be kind of hard to understand, but you could always look at the pictures! :-)
>
> I have also registered
http://www.acappella.se where the forum (today available at http://www.goka.org) will move within short. Sometime in the beginning of next year I hope to launch something that looks more like http://www.acappella-online.de which I think is just great! When acappella.se is ready to be launched we will also organize a vocal group party, to kick of CASAs precense here in Sweden. With "we" in this case, I mean me and Peder from the Real Group who had heard about my ambassadorship from Bill (I guess?) and was really exited about it. Things will be a bit easier with those guys on boards...;-)

It's "face" at Redfish Brewhouse
Appearing Monday, November 24
Shows at 7:30 & 9 pm

Hey! Monday's the night to come in from the cold and chill out instead with some cool and refreshing a cappella sounds from Boulder-based 6-guy group face!.

Let's face it.

When it comes to facing the music, face is already there.

Or you could put another face on it and say, "Let's face the music and . . dance?"

Well, not much room for dancing in the Redfish music room, but if you face the bar and turn just right, it'll look like you're dancing -- maybe?

Why not just get comfortable and listen to the great sounds that come from these faces? There'll be two shows -- both crowded, so make your plans early and reserve a face table (what the heck is that?) by calling 303-440-5858.

Now, you don't wanna wait; tomorrow may be too late (song lyric?).

Every musical facet of face is fascinating. The songs are well sung. The blend is beautiful. The energy is extant. And the fun will just put a smile where it belongs -- on your face.

Be there! 'Cause it's face family frolic night at Redfish -- all ages are welcome, with no cover and no minimum. Just good food and drink and a great musical show. Redfish is at 2027 13th Street a half block north of the Pearl Street Mall.

Last a cappella show until January, so it's now or 2004! Come on down!

(Bolder A Cappella is produced by the Colorado Vocal Jazz Society in cooperation with Redfish owner, Steve Shenk. With its excellent sight lines and acoustics, competitive prices and no cover, this is where you get great a cappella all year long.)

The Last Note Singers is having its dress rehearsal tonite,Tuesday, 11/25/03, for its 21st (or something like that.  Who was counting in the 80's?) holiday season of performances.  Afterwards, around 9:45 PM, we're going to migrate to Choppers Sports Grill, 80 S. Madison in the Cherry Creek neighborhood, our Tuesday nite, every week bar for our "dress down" rehearsal.  We'll do a short set, and maybe sing some carols just to get you into the holiday mood. Choppers is an accappella friendly venue with happy hour prices on drinks and fantastic appetizers.  It's your only chance to buy a cold one at an LNS gig this holiday season.  Join us if you can.  Peace, love and all that other stuff!

Hello A Cappellists,

I know you're all busy in the throws of the holiday season, but we're looking again for new Colorado a cappella groups, as well as repeating some of our great performing ensembles from the past, to feature in the winter series of our very successful a cappella shows in Boulder. There are three dates still open at this time -- January 12, February 23 and March 22 -- and we like to have at least one new group in the line up.

The scheduled dates remain on Mondays. Our fall series got off to kind of a slow start, but picked up each week until our current record of approximately 210 folks (not counting hold overs to the 9pm show) jammed in for the two shows by face! last Monday night. Wow! It has sure been fun for all of the groups to sing for folks that come only and specifically to hear good contemporary a cappella music.

I believe you all know most of the details, but you can review some of the details below, and, of course, I welcome your phone calls with specific questions. Basically, we're looking at continuing our regular schedule and arrangements (why screw around with a good thing, right?).

The program calls for two 45-50 minute sets or shows, at 7:30 and 9pm. This has proved overall to be the best arrangement.

Of course, a cappella is the feature of the series, but some groups have inserted voice/guitar solos or other short non-a cappella segments that have usually fit in very well with their presentation. An opening segment in each show that features an up-and-coming group is also welcome, provided we are notified in advance of this and it is limited to 3-4 numbers maximum.

Boulder A Cappella has no cover and we ask you to participate only on that basis. At the same time, Redfish and CVJS reserve the right to bring in nationally known groups, usually not as part of this series, that will help stimulate new interest in a cappella and in our Boulder offering.

Bolder A Cappella has benefitted from participation by most of the well known groups in Colorado, and we hope to keep our standards high, yet include the best-in-field of other area groups, especially representing the many styles available including jazz, R&B, folk, Gospel, Doo-Wop (still looking for that one) and Barbershop. You name it; we want to hear it.

The fee arrangement has been modified to improve your opportunity to make higher fees. As larger audiences are realized (remember, that's part of your job as featured artists), Redfish has agreed to raise the  maximum performance fee to $250 AND provide supper from a special "band menu" for up to five members of your group. In most cases that will be all of you, but some groups will have 8 or more members and that would of course "break the bank." Basically, figure an allotment of $50 as a limit for this discount menu (you will not go away hungry).

On some occasions we have seen poor turnout, so, were your group to draw as few as 30 people your fee might be as low as $150. That's the base amount. For every person on hand at the first or second show (counting twice), your fee increases by $1.00 up to $250, so with 100 folks on hand between the two counts, you realize your $250 fee. The total of the two counts for face! (including hold overs) was actually 253, so they were way over their target.

Since most of our groups are now providing their own sound (it's your choice), the fee is contingent upon this and will be reduced by $50 if Redfish has to supply house sound, which is only operated by their house technician.

Please send an email back to me indicating your interest (or not) and your preference of date(s) and I'll try to return to you by December 15th with a secure offer.

Thanks for making a cappella important in Colorado!

Hey all, just a quick note, I've been very busy updating A Cappella Holiday, the only 24/7 all-holiday a cappella radio show!

In the past few weeks, I've added lots of great tunes; the playlist now includes contemporary, barbershop/Sweet Adeline and doo-wop tunes from groups like Tonic Sol-Fa, Rockapella, Stormy Weather, The Ritz, Christine Lavin, Hampton Avenue, Jubilation Singers, The Kringle Singers, D.C. Anderson and Rescue Ministries-- plus lots more!

You can find full details and tune in at http://acappellaalways.com

(And don't miss the sister station, "A Cappella Always," for plenty of non-holiday a cappella music...)

It has been a long time coming, but the day is FINALLY here…

Three 5 and 6 is proud to announce the release of their debut CD, “Urban A
Cappella”

This album is approximately an hour in length and is mostly comprised of
original songs that were written by the group over the past 2 years. They have
truly put their passions into this CD and believe it will move you in many
ways. This album is pure a cappella like you have never heard it before. If you
have heard them perform then you can attest--they're not your average a
cappella band!

Those who have had a chance to preview songs from the album agree that the sound
and energy of the music is downright jaw dropping! Reviewers have made comments
such as, “I have never heard anything like this before!” and “This is amazing!
I can’t believe this is only voices!”

The CD is currently available on their newly updated website, www.three5and6.com
along with a large selection of t-shirts, stickers and posters. All of these
items would make great Christmas presents for family, friends and co-workers.

The new version of their website was just launched last week and along with the
CD and merchandise, contains a great intro presentation and some fun downloads
like wallpaper, screensavers and a video. Also, make sure to click on the
“Forum” tab and voice your opinions about their new CD and website.

Take some time and check it out and I hope you enjoy the CD.

Merry Christmas!

Since Christmas is almost upon us, we thought a "budgeting" incentive might be a good idea. So, we put together a "Gift Certificate" you can use for Christmas stockings or on the tree for family, fans and friends who would value a Harmony Sweeps reservation. After all, if you're going to go anyway, why not invite significant others with this reminder and special present for the holidays or an approaching birthday or anniversary? And here's what it looks like:

And here's how it works:

Hey all. As the subject says, our 8 part mixed
acappella group is looking for a tenor as one of
our members is leaving.
We are a new group (so new we don't have a name
yet) who have been preparing music for about 3
months. Our repertoire is varied in style:
classical - Eric Whitacre's "Go Lovely Rose";
contemporary - Toto's "Africa"; traditional - The
Star Spangled Banner and others. We're hoping to
perfrom fairly soon (around late winter), so we
would need to find someone who can learn quickly.
Right now, we are holding our rehearsals at the
Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the
University of Denver (Iliff and University) on
Tuesday nights from 7 to 9:30 or 10pm.
If this sounds interesting to you, PLEASE let me
know ASAP by e-mail. Thanks.

Tim Jones here, from the Utah comedy a cappella group MOOSEBUTTER.  I wanted to let you all know about a really cool event going on Saturday January 17 in Orem, Utah.  It will be well worth a trip.

Wes Carroll, vocal drummer for the "rock band without instruments" The House Jacks from San Francisco will be teaching a one-day Mouth Drumming Workshop at Heritage Music in music.  Wes is known the world over for his amazing drum talent.  He is just as good of a teacher, too.

We'd be happy to work out accomadations or travel arrangements with you to make it easy for you to come.  Call me or email with any questions.

It's winter-- Brrr!
Time to examine the good things in life that happen inside. That includes the winter series of great contemporary a cappella groups at Boulder's Redfish Brewhouse every other Monday.  These  nights, you'll want to chill out with some cool and refreshing a cappella sounds.

Appearing Monday, January 12 at 7:30 and 9pm.
Boulder County's TIMBERLINERS!

There's an old saying that if you don't like a particular Barbershop song, just stick around 'cause they're bound to sing it again!  <g>

Seriously, nobody doesn't like Barbershop -- especially when it comes fresh to you with the enthusiasm that these Boulder County regulars bring along. These guys have been putting on entertaining shows since before Tom opened his Tavern. In fact, there's good evidence that a local Barbershop Quartet was on the opening night show at Chautauqua way back when.

The Timberliners are some of the most faithful a cappella enthusiasts in the world. They know what it takes to strike a chord and sustain a line -- to the point where you think the tenor may bust something. Their Chautauqua shows are a legend -- one of Boulder's favorite summer traditions. If you enjoy this stuff, call Jonathon at 303-442-0556 about joining -- or short of that, book a quartet or a whole show if you're a mind to. Monday night, though, just sit back and enjoy.

Be there Monday night -- no cover, no hassle, no bad notes. Just warm hospitality and good sounds.

You won't regret it!

And come back on January 26 to hear CU-Boulder's legendary BUFFoons!

Some of Colorado's most popular vocal bands now invade Boulder regularly on specific Mondays. Many of these groups perform mainly for private parties and are not generally available to the public. Bolder A Cappella is produced by the Colorado Vocal Jazz Society at the popular Redfish Brewhouse, With excellent sight lines and acoustics, competitive prices and no cover, Redfish provides a unique opportunity to sample what's out there.          Join us for the fun!

Hey all,

I posted back in November about starting a 5-person, rock-oriented
vocal band to rehearse and perform in the Denver/Boulder metro. I've
gotten a good response from this message board and other sources, but
the group still needs another singer before we can start rehearsing.

If you're interested in rehearsing 1-2 times per week, performing
about twice per month, building a group from the ground up, saving
for audio gear, competing in Harmony Sweeps, and eventually recording
an album, please email me so we can talk some more.

We're looking for altos, tenors or baritones. VP and arranging
experience would be cool. Obviously, previous a cappella experience
is important.

Thanks,

CU's Unimaginable BUFFOONS!

Wow!

You a acappellists must be really excited about this Monday's chance to catch The Buffoons, one of the most famous and enduring a cappella groups anywhere around Boulder. We know you've been waiting for almost two years for them to return to Redfish. Well, here they are!

These disarmingly modest guys, who have been haunting the CU campus for 40 years, look forward to singing for you Monday the 26th at Redfish. They also expect you'll wanta buy their latest and greatest CD, "No Time for Love" (that should probably have been titled "No Time for Classes"), 'cause they know you want to support their educations by contributing to their music habit. Most of you will have heard them before, and if you do know the Buffoons, you'll know every show is a new creation -- if it isn't the music, it's bound to be the antics.

Don't miss this chance to catch them in action! And if you like 'em (how could you not?!), you might consider a private show (music, that is). That can be done by contacting our business line at 303-444-6434. Knock twice and ask for Evan.

Hi, everyone,

A delayed, but heartfelt review of the Jan 17th Wes Carroll Mouthdrumming Workshop and Moosebutter/Eclipse Concert:

Several members of our group (Cross Examined) decided to do a roadtrip from Denver to Orem UT for this workshop last weekend, and the short story is - what an AWESOME day! Well worth the 1056 mile round trip!

First off, thanks SO MUCH to Moosebutter for sponsoring the workshop and concert! They did a great job of organizing it and making sure that participants felt welcome.

While attendance was less than I'd expected, the mouthdrumming workshop was all it was advertised to be, and more - Wes did an awesome job of leading the attendees from basic to advanced (he lost me halfway through intermediate, but through no fault of his own - I was there primarily to support one of our group members who has both interest AND talent). Wes has an excellent teaching style, and does a great job of involving everyone without making anyone feel put on the spot. The low attendance (between 10 and 15 people at each session) had the very positive benefit of allowing Wes to provide more 1:1 work with each person present. I heard one attendee say that it was "one of the best days of my life!" Now, I'll caveat that by saying that he was young and hasn't experienced all the grandeur that life has to offer, but I do understand the sentiment, especially since it came from someone who lives and breathes vocal percussion. If you're interested in VP and Wes is doing a workshop in your neck of the woods, I'd strongly encourage you to attend. You won't be disappointed.

The evening concert, while also not as well attended as I'd expected, was absolutely AWESOME!!! A local teen "boy band" (I can't remember their name off the top of my head) started things off, doing a very respectable job for a bunch of guys who've only been singing together for a couple of months, or so I understand. They had good percussion skills, and if their bass can keep that low voice, he's going to be awesome! If they stick with it, these guys are going to do very well - it was impressive to see a group of teens with enough discipline to do what it took to be ready to open for groups as notable as Moosebutter and Eclipse.

They were followed by Kage, described in Tim Jones' mail below as "inspirational rapper." While the style difference between Kage and the other groups was significant, he and his two fellow musicians were up for the challenge. I was especially impressed with their female vocalist, Eden - WOW! What an amazing, pure voice - all due respect to Moosebutter and Eclipse, but I could have listened to her sing all night!

And then came the two premiere groups of the evening - Moosebutter and Eclipse. Having never heard Moosebutter before, I was totally unprepared for their show. And I was totally and completely a dedicated fan within the first 5 minutes. While their off-beat humor may not appeal to everyone, it most certainly appealed to us. We laughed until we cried - literally! The improv section when they took requests from the audience and then did their own versions ("Beat It," for example, with very non-accurate lyrics and complete with moon walking was wonderful.) It's hard for me to believe, but talking with some members of the group after the show, they said that the improv section of the show fell in the "middle of the road" category compared to how it normally goes. The thing that impressed me most was that Moosebutter doesn't just depend on humor and fascinating song-writing skills to carry the show - they also have excellent vocal talent, and their songs showcase this talent well. Our favorite song was, and continues to be, Psycho Phantom (I think that's the name), but all were well performed and well received by the audience. If Moosebutter is ever again at Redfish or elsewhere within your driving range, don't think twice, GO!!!!

After a short intermission, Wes Carroll and Tim Jones did a couple of excellent numbers together that well demonstrated their vocal/percussion talents (Wes had earlier joined Moosebutter for one of their numbers as well). Wes did a solo mouthdrumming number that had jaws dropping all over the auditorium, even jaws of those who'd spent the day with him at the workshop.

And then came Eclipse.....I'd heard them in the closing ceremonies of the SLC Olympics, but had never heard them live, and I didn't have any of their CDs. I do now. As a friend of mine would say, Oh, my WORD!!!!!" I've been a fan of gospel a cappella music for a long time, and my two favorite groups are Acappella and Vocal Union - both are excellent, and put on a great show and have set a standard that only a few groups, gospel or otherwise, have been able to achieve (in my humble opinion). After hearing them, it was no big surprise that they were the winners of the 2002 Harmony Sweeps. Eclipse could perform with any group, anytime, anywhere, and hold their own. If you're familiar with the formerly-a cappella group "Go Fish" (with their last CD, they left the a cappella genre behind), Eclipse has a very similar sound. Excellent arrangements, with wonderful vocal styling and great stage presence. "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" and "Zoot Suit Riot" were probably our favorites - if you haven't heard these songs and the rest of the Eclipse repertoire, you're missing out.

Ok, I've rambled on long enough. Thanks for listening! If Moosebutter or Eclipse are ever in the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and go to their concerts. It'll be well worth the admission, at twice the price!

--Tim

P.S. Shameless plug warning: Hope you can join Cross Examined at Redfish Monday, Feb. 9th, 7:30 and 9:00. We'd love to see you there!

Hey all,

Sorry for the lame post topic, but I was wondering if anyone knows of
affordable or free rehearsal space in and/or between Denver and
Boulder.

Even if you are currently using a rehearsal space, I bet you're not
using it every night of the week! Care to share with your friendly

Churches, theaters, recording studios, empty rooms in office
buildings - all suggestions are welcome.

If I get a good response, I'll post a list of rehearsal spaces to

Thanks a ton!

Hey, Dave, I don't think it's a lame post topic at all. Ya gotta have
rehearsal space, plain and simple. One thing I might suggest is the
group members' houses/apartments. You can always simply move if you
get noise complaints, but in my limited experience people are more
accepting than one might think. Just my two cents ....

Hello All,

My name is Silver I am new to the group. I guess I will tell you a
little about me. I have been into music since I can remember, in the
80s I owned Sound Unlimited mobile DJ business. I was fortunate in
my life time to meet some famous singers and I was the DJ for the
tryouts of Electric boogaloo. I sang in a band in Louisiana for a
bit. Then I let sound Unlimited go dormit for a few years. When my
daughter turned 18 she started writing music put out a CD and she got
me back into it. In 2000 I was in a 13 car accident which has
effected my memory so when I sing I need song sheets and lyrics in
front of me now to perform. So I took Sound Unlimited out of
hibernation and started it back up as a karaoke biz. I perform for
many festivals and private parties as well as do the karaoke
business. I am looking for a band that needs a female vocalist with a
variety of sound and knowledge of songs that does not mind my
handicap of needing the lyrics for me to see. I love all kinds of
music the only music I cannot sing is rap I am not real good at that.
I hope to make lots of new friends on this group and may I say it is
nice to meet you all.
Silver

And PAC will make a deal with you -- just mention "colorado-acappella" when you send along an email order and you might get a break!

I don't usually pass along this stuff, but these titles just sort of intrigued me.Im agine seeing the DeCastro Sisters in a CD list? Amazing! Here are some titles you probably haven't heard in awhile:

CAMERATA VOCAL GROUP - MY ANGEL
The Camerata Vocal Group comprises eight professional musicians, seven singers and a sound engineer. All are graduates of higher schools of music in Belarus and Russia. Their repertoire includes pieces belonging to different genres, from classical to jazz, oftentimes interwoven with each other, giving birth to totally new and uncommon combinations. The core of "Angel" is Slavic folklore, but each piece is a work of experimental and quite amazing vocal art. Concert tours in the Soviet Union, Switzerland, Poland, Turkey, Austria and the U.S. have gained them fans from all music traditions. Eight stunning pieces: "Near The Grove," the soaring "Falcon," the title tune (with a marvelous vocal "horn section"), the classical/jazzy "My Little Eye-Brows," "Autumn Night," "Segudilia," "Bulgarian Fantasy" and "Christmas." Absolutely lovely, with harmonies and vocal effects that must be heard to be believed. Camerata is one of the best in the world, however we wish to define or categorize them!

TALISMAN - WATCH ME FLY
Founded in 1990 with the purpose of bringing African and African-American music to the Stanford University (CA), community. Since then the 17 to 18-member mixed voice a cappella group has recorded several excellent, critically acclaimed albums, of which "Watch Me" is number six. 14 spirited, beautifully-arranged tunes, some favorites: the People's Movement of South Africa song, "Toyi Toyi," "Free," a new arrangement of "Swing Low," "Chant of the Islands," "Strange Fruit," "Sum'Bulala," "Be Like Him," the celebration of motherhood "Fifa," "Tumba," "On Children," and the title tune. Rhythmic, powerful, sweet, heartfelt CDs and "Watch Me" is their most poised, most confident yet. Outstanding!

SHALIMARS - BEST OF
If there were a Sweet Adelines All Stars of All Time, most people would place The Shalimars near the top of the list! Their surprising, bright, ringing sound shines on 20 wonderful pop selections, and then 9 more "sacred selections." "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine," "Red Sails In The Sunset," "Just Friends," "Floating Down The River," "Sunrise, Sunset," "Lavender Blue," "Sound of Music Medley," "In The Garden," "Nearer My God to Thee," "Joshua Fit The Battle of Jericho" -- each song is a gem. This is the CD that beginning Sweet Adelines groups listen to, and say "We want to be like the Shalimars!" Outstanding.

LAURELS - KEEPING TRADITION
Harmony is a universal urge, and when it accompanies a love theme, it's the pinnacle of music-making. The Laurels first sought that peak in 1959, harmonizing at sock hops and at the studio. Forty years later, original member Dick Muse and four others took their places around the mike to record 16 classic and "should-have-been-classic" doo-wop tunes. "Please Mr. Sun," "Ball & Chain," "Everyone's Laughing," the top-40 hit "Barefootin'," "Willette," "Cold Feet," "For Your Love," "Something's Got A Hold On Me," "Lundy Dundy," "Time Can Make You Change" and "Sweet Was The Wine" and others. All a cappella except for the final cut, "Rhythm." These are authentic, gravelly-bass, soaring tenor, sweet harmony doo-wop, the kind we love to hear. "Keeping" is a keeper!

DELTA RHYTHM BOYS - I DREAMT I DWELT IN HARLEM
The rise of groups like the Golden Gate Quartet took gospel music out of the conservative confines of the Black church, and opened the door for other groups who wanted to sing spirituals in a different way. One of the groups to achieve success in the more liberated climate was the Hampton Institute Quartet, who changed their name to the Delta Rhythm Boys, and were equally at home delivering a pop song as a gospel item. They teamed up with Ella Fitzgerald during the 1940s recording ban in America, when her career might have been put on hold. However much the gospel group might have been threatened with eternal damnation to even think about "La Cucaracha," their fearlessness, both musically and politically, is what made them one of the greats. 20 winners, and we can't decide which we like the best, pop tunes like "Little Lize," the sweet "It Was Wonderful Then," a swinging "La Cucaracha," the silly minstrel-show tune "Watermelon On The Vine," the hip "Gimme Some Skin" and "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave To Me," or gospel hits like "Wait Till I Put On My Crown," a rocking "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," "Certainly Lord," "Mighty Day," and "Scandalize My Name" (which is actually more of a commentary on religious bigotry). There's a particularly fine, laid-back early version of "Georgia On My Mind," and the swinging title tune, the final cut, is a joy. All songs at least piano accompanied, recorded in NY in 1941.

HOT HARMONY GROUPS 1932-1951 - THAT'S THE RHYTHM VOLUME 1
"That's The Rhythm" is a delicious collection of 20 examples of Black vocal roup harmony from the early 1930s to the early 1950s, all at least lightly ccompanied. The watershed moment for these groups was the rise of network radio, which made immediate stars of the Mills Brothers and the Ink Spots. y 1945 there were three routes an aspiring group could take, the "jubilee" gospel style of the Golden Gate Quartet, which enjoyed a crossover appeal, the jump/jive stylings of the Four Vagabonds, which had an almost entirely Black following, or going into the pop crossover stylings of the Ink Spots/Mills Brothers, whose huge success was due to the support of a vast white audience. So many treats: The Three Keys' cartoon-like "Somebody Stole Gabriel's Horn," Three Sharps and a Flat's wonderful title tune, the raunchy, double-entendre "Garbage Man" by the Four Aces, the very funny "Wig Blues" by The Melody Masters, who also star on "Subway Cutie," The Four Vagabonds' swinging "Choo Choo," The Four Blues' boogie-woogie anthem "It Takes A Long Tall Brown Skinned Girl," the Four Knights' sweet "Wrapped Up In A Dream," The Three Riffs' silly "Cherry In My Lemon And Lime," The Beavers' torch song "I'd Rather Be Wrong Than Blue" musical treasures on many levels. Funny, poignant, hip, romantic here, and some of the sweetest leads and harmonies you could imagine. We love this collection!

GOLDEN GATE QUARTET - GOOD BOOK
When the four young black men first began harmonizing together in Norfolk, A in 1934, they could hardly have imagined being invited four years later o New York to perform in the now legendary "From Spirituals to Swing" cncerts at Carnegie Hall. About that time they cut their first recorded ides, laying down an amazing 14 tracks in 2 hours. Nearly 70 years later, he group is still spreading the Gospel and delighting audiences with their beat, rhythmic hits. "Good Book" is essentially a "best of" studio CD, ontaining 18 tunes. "I Soon Will Be Done With The Troubles Of This World," Ezekiel Saw The Wheel," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Rock My Soul," "Gospel rain" Day," "Down By The Riverside," "Swing Down Chariot" aboard the Gospel train, and it's a great ride!

CATS & FIDDLE - WE CATS SWING FOR YOU
The Cats and the Fiddle was one of the pre-eminent pioneering R&B vocal roups of the 1930s. "The Fiddle" in the group's name is not purely himsical: it alludes to the stand-up bass they used, while in jazz parlance ach member of the group was a "hep cat," as in track 17 of this ompilation, "Hep Cat's Holiday." And what a compilation it is 27 swinging, iving mono recordings from 1939 to 1946. All songs are lightly accompanied y the infamous "fiddle" and guitar, but whatever it was that made whole enerations go nuts over R&B music, these "Cats" have got a boatload of it! isten to the title tune, a too-hip-for-words "Killin' Jive," "Gang usters," "Thursday Evening Swing," "Nuts To You," "Mr. Rhythm Man," "When I row Too Old to Dream," "Public Jitterbug Number One," "That's On, Jack, hat's On," "One Is Never Too Old to Swing," "Stomp, Stomp," "Life's Too hort" -- these guys are simply cookin' on every one of these cuts. Over 77 inutes of the finest jive and swing you never got a chance to hear -- an nbelievable bargain!

DE CASTRO SISTERS - TEACH ME TONIGHT
Most popular in the 50s, the de Castros began a decade earlier as a Latin act, which they virtually dropped when they were signed by the otherwise hillbilly-oriented Abbott label. Besides 31 (big band accompanied) period hits, "Teach Me" includes a thick photo album with the history of these 3 Cuban rich girls who shared an amazing musical career stretching from the 1940s to the present day (at least as of 1999, when the CD was released), from Miami to Hollywood to New York City. Sneaking off from their gig at Miami's Clover Club to sing (and record) with Tito Puente's band, being invited to Hollywood by Walt Disney to sing background vocals on "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" flip side of the supposed-to-be hit "It's Love." A Cleveland disc jockey turned it over, played it and got bags of mail. The "suggestive" tune became the Sisters' biggest hit. Novelty and pop tunes like "Boom Boom Boomerang," "Cuckoo In The Clock," "Rockin' and Rollin' In Hawaii," "Cowboys Don't Cry," "Don't Call Me Sweetie," "Old Timer's Tune" the upbeat "Biddle-Dee Bop" and You Take Of Me (I'll Take Care of You;" torch songs like "No One to Blame ut You," "Give Me Time," "If I Ever Fall In Love," "It's Yours," and the ountry tune "That Little Word Called Love"we've never heard most of these ongs, but we like them. They are as full of energy, spirit and innocence as he 1950s, and the improbable de Castro Sisters!

RAVENS - BIRDS OF A FEATHER
In the development of Doo-Wop in the years following WWII, the most influential singer, on a level with Elvis in Rockabilly, was The Ravens' Jimmy Ricks, whose booming bass would set the standard for a generation of aspiring bass vocalists. "Birds" is a generous 2-CD set with 50 soulful, authentic (all accompanied) cuts, recorded from 1946 to 1952 by one of greatest R&B quartets of all time! Smooth and romantic on hits like "Lullaby," "Until The Real Thing Comes Along," "Deep Purple," "It's Too Soon to Know," Gershwin's "Summertime," and "I'm So Crazy For Love" and "You Foolish Thing;" hip, swingin' and funny on "Be I Bumble Bee or Not," "Marie," "Leave My Gal Alone," "Oh Babe," "Don't Look Now," "My Baby's Gone," "Midnight Blues," "Gotta Find My Baby," "I Get My Lovin' on a Saturday Night," a jazzy "Begin the Beguine" and a Ravens original, "Rock Me All Night Long." Wonderful extensive liner notes with photos and vintage posters. Every cut is a winner and these guys deserve to be a lot more famous! Outstanding.
