heavyweight champions of a cappella! Formed in 1961 in Brookly, NY,
The Persuasions carried the a cappella torch alone until the
explosion of the genre in the late eighties. After 18 albums, their
motto still remains intact: "We still ain't got no band."

It's winter in Boulder!
Time to catch the good things in life that happen inside. That includes the winter series of great contemporary a cappella groups that come by Boulder's Redfish Brewhouse every other Monday. Stop by and warm up with some cool and refreshing a cappella sounds.

Appearing Monday, February 9 at 7:30 and 9pm.
Longmont's warm and wonderful gospel group:
CROSS EXAMINED!

What a treat this group was on their last appearance at Redfish a year ago ~ an honest-to-goodness contemporary a cappella Gospel group. "Cross Examined" fits that model perfectly: an 8-voice ensemble from Longmont, formed in the fall of 2000 to bring the very best in Gospel music to you as an expression of their Christian faith.Redfish A Cappella audiences have been eagerly awaiting their return.

The Cross Examined repertoire includes a wide variety of Christian music styles, including traditional and Southern Gospel, Christian Contemporary, hymn tunes, Praise and Worship. And along with that, they're not afraid to throw in a couple of Bluegrass numbers now and then, too! And as the evening progresses, there’s a healthy dose of humor to keep a smile on your face!

It's great to have a Gospel ensemble like Cross Examined come along!

You can contact them through Tim Staggs at tpstaggs@... or call 303-828-0424.

Some of Colorado's most popular vocal bands now invade Boulder regularly on specific Mondays. Many of these groups perform mainly for private parties and are not generally available to the public. Bolder A Cappella is produced by the Colorado Vocal Jazz Society at the popular Redfish Brewhouse, a family spot with excellent sight lines and acoustics, competitive prices and no cover. Here's a unique opportunity to sample what's out there. Join us for the fun!

20th Annual "Harmony Sweepstakes" A Cappella Competition in March to Feature Region’s Best Talent

Eight of the best regional singing groups will compete in all-vocal public concert.

DENVER, Colo. (February 6, 2004) — Can the a cappella singing phenomenon that’s been sweeping our region’s schools and performing venues for over a decade launch a group talented enough to beat all international competitors?

Colorado will be a step closer to knowing on March 6, 2004. That day, nearly a thousand avid fans and curious new listeners will pack Gates Concert Hall in Denver for the 20th anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival.

Starting at 7pm, the region’s 8 best groups will perform their most compelling a cappella arrangements. Any style of music can be performed. A panel of judges will rank the performances based on skill, originality and presentation. By the end of the night, the Rocky Mountain region will have a winner.

Here's the field:
Curious Gage (Ft Collins CO)
Face (Boulder CO)
Inpulse (St Paul MN)
Lodo Air Band (Morrison CO)
moosebutter (Provo UT)
No Better Cause (Lincoln NE)
Raging Harmonies (Westminster CO)
Transformed (Littleton CO)

And the winner will be the Rocky Mountain’s choice to compete against 7 other groups from across North America—and hopefully win—at the International Harmony Sweepstakes Competition in San Francisco in May. This year marks the 20th National competition, which became international last year by producing a winning group from Australia, "Idea of North."

The local event, now in its 15th year, takes place in the area’s premier new venue— acoustically rich Gates Concert Hall, part of DU, at University Avenue and Iliff.

The Rocky Mountain region produced a champion once before. In 1993, local group the 17th Avenue All-Stars took the regional competition and later the National Harmony Sweepstakes Championship. Each year, this a cappella phenomenon grows in popularity, making the competition stiffer and more exciting.
This year’s event is sponsored by Flesher-Hinton Music Company, Colorado’s largest commercial music resource, headquartered in Denver. The Colorado Vocal Jazz Society, a 20 year-old non-profit organization will produce the event.

The Rocky Mountain "Harmony Sweepstakes"
A Cappella Competition Scheduled for March
Eight best regional singing groups will compete in all-vocal, public concert at DU.

DENVER, (Feb. 6, 2004) —
Can the Colorado a cappella singing phenomenon that’s been sweeping our region’s schools and performing venues for over a decade launch a group talented enough to beat all international competitors?

Colorado will be a step closer to knowing on March 6 when nearly a thousand avid fans and curious new listeners will pack Gates Concert Hall at the University of Denver for the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival.

Starting at 7 p.m., the region’s eight best groups—chosen from 15 applicants by an audition/review committee— will perform their most compelling a cappella arrangements. Any style of music can be performed, so long as no instruments—only voices—are used. Rol Sharette, 45-year veteran of professional singing and producer of this year’s event, explained, "A Cappella’s popularity is skyrocketing because today’s groups perform contemporary songs from many musical styles. You’ll hear modern R&B, rock, jazz, latin, you name it. Many groups use their voices to imitate instruments, so the music has become hip for a very wide audience."

A great example of this kind of singing is last year's Rocky Mountain Regional Champs, Groove Society, who were cited as one of the best vocal jazz style groups ever to appear in the local Sweeps. This year, among other appearances, Groove Society will open in Colorado Springs April 30 for the 2003 international Harmony Champions, Idea of North.

A panel of judges comprised of local and national music experts and media celebs will rank the performances based on skill, originality and presentation. The evening’s winner will be the Rocky Mountain’s choice to compete against 7 other groups from across North America—and hopefully win—at the International Harmony Sweepstakes Competition in San Francisco in May. This year marks the 20th National competition, which became international last year and produced a winning group from Australia.

This year’s event is sponsored by Flesher-Hinton Music Company, Colorado’s largest commercial music resource, headquartered in Denver. The Colorado Vocal Jazz Society, a 20 year-old non-profit organization, is producing the event.

Finalists for the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARAs), the Grammys of the international a cappella community, have been announced by the CASA selected nominating committee and it looks like an exciting and varied line up, maybe the finest in recent years. You can review the entire list at www.casa.org.

It's exciting to see several of my personal favorites and probably some of yours. The ever-perfect Kings Singers have a new Christmas album ("Christmas"), that is up for that award, but they have stiff and excellent competition from The Real Group ("Julien En Her") and Utah's Eclipse ("Three Kings" which I reviewed here a few months ago).

Another Utah group, moosebutter, who we will be seeing in a couple of weeks in Denver at the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes, are up for Best Comedy Song, "Psycho, the Musical" from the 2003 Harmony Sweepstakes Championships album.

The most important news for us is about Denver's remarkable professional ensemble, Kantorie, who are nominated (possibly for their first CARA) for Best Religious Album ("The Road Home") AND Best Religious Song ("Ezekiel Saw the Wheel"). I've heard the latter in concert and it truly is a work of art.

Nice to see these awards get international attention, and to see a cappella awards finally becoming part of the action at the 2004 Grammys, where last week a cappella accolades were placed in Best Gospel Album ("A Cappella" -- Gaither Vocal Band), Producer oft he Year, Classical to Robina Young ("Darkness Into Light" -- Anonymous 4), Best Choral Performance ("Walden Pond" -- Dale Warland Singers), and Best Classical Crossover Album ("Our American Journey" -- Chanticleer).

These albums are surely conveniently available from both Primarily A Cappella and Mainely A Cappella at very competitive prices. The final winners for the CARAs will be announced in late March.

Well, folks, I have been called to task regarding a couple of omissions, entirely unintentional I assure you, in my notice of exceptional accomplishments in the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award nominations the other day.

Truthfully, I wasn't aware that the Sounds of the Rockies Chorus from Denver's Mile High SPEBSQSA Chapter was on the nominated album, "Top 21 Choruses of 2003," but of course they would be. They're only spectacular and winning awards all over.

More obvious, but less a Colorado issue, was my failing to mention the Inpulse nomination for "Best Pop/Rock Cover Song." Inpulse will be competing in the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes, three weeks from tonight -- coming all the way from St. Paul MN.

Congrats to all of these fine musicians. They deserve not only our mention, but our admiration.

Come to the Denver Sweeps on March 6 and you'll find out why.

Rol,  I would also like to point out to you that Storm Front is nominated for Best Barbershop Song from our album "Storm Watch".   Lets keep singing!

Well, I again apologize for missing an entry -- and one for my favorite barbershop quartet. I guess I'll have to turn over scrutinizing the list (of about 130, I believe) to someone with better eyesight or concentration.

Anyway, congrats to Storm Front. Hope to see them on our Boulder A Cappella series this spring sometime. What about it, fellas?

Meanwhile, come the the March 6 Sweeps to catch some other winners!

Last call for ad space in the program for the 20th Anniversary Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival and competition, to be held on Saturday, March 6 at 7pm in the luxurious new Gates Concert Hall on the University of Denver campus. The event is sponsored by Colorado's largest music supplier, Flesher-Hinton Music Company of Denver and produced by the non-profit Colorado Vocal Jazz Society.

We have several excellent advertisers and may need to increase our pages to 20. The reason for this notice is to solidify any inquiries or expressed interest in time to make these changes. Please consider this seriously.

If you or your school or business is connected with music, this is an unusually good opportunity to put the word in front the right folks. The audience average age will be about 28, with a wide range of demographics from 18 to 60.

We have an 8.5" by 5.5" program in production, 1,000 copies with 16 pages, 3 or 4 of them will be color. Advertisers are responsible for camera ready pdf ads in the following sizes. If you or anyone you know would benefit from advertising in the Harmony Sweeps slick program, here is the rate card:

Full page:   8h x 5w        $350
Half page:   4h x 5w        $200
Qtr page:    4h x 2.5w     $125
        or       2h x 5w           "
8th page:    2h x 2.5w      $75
        or       1h x 5w           "
Biz card:     2h x 3w        $45
16th page:   2h x 1.5w     $35

Color is available, but pricey. Right now I have 3 color pages committed or on hold. The 4th page would be $600 or some negotiated split. Please pass this on to any portential advertiser. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Then is probably the largest non-university vocal group event of the year, certainly the biggest a cappella program in the Rocky Mountain region. Gates Hall will be packed with fans and friends. the advertising deadline for commitment and art is Friday, February 20. Those of you who have reserved space MUST have artwork in by that date.

Don't forget that participating groups and supported organizations are entitled to reductions from the commercuial rates as previously quoted. But you must have your reservation in and material on the way by Friday. Please contact me if you have not yet submitted your art.

PDF files may be emailed as attachments to rjsharette@.... Call 303-413-8774 if you have questions or are just confirming reservations.

Hey A Cappellists,

Just a word for those of you considering (and we hope that includes YOU) coming to the biggest a cappella show of the year at Gates Hall on Saturday, March 6. There has been some confusion about tickets and we want to be sure that doesn't discourage your attendance.

Seats are general admission at $18, with student, senior and group rates (15+) at $14. That's comparable to previous Sweeps at $17 and no discount rates. The venue handles all ticket sales, and this has complicated the purchase process for some of you. Here are the facts:

CVJS cannot possibly service your ticket ordering needs, so we were grateful to work with the Newman Center staff on this heavy responsibility. However, the arrangements were not specifically clear when we signed up. We have always used TicketWeb, a modest ordering system for mid-range show folks. Gates Hall has a contract with Ticketmaster that prevented this, so we went along with that, believing the Newman Center box office would also handle sales. We find now that, by virtue of their contract with TM, they can only handle walk-up sales and group reservations -- no onesy-twosy advance sales. That was a shock.

But never mind! There's an easy solution for us all!

First, Gates Hall is humungous, so there will certainly be plenty of tickets available an hour before the show. You can buy your general admission seats (no reserved seats or sections) right there when you arrive. And at no mark up at all.

Second, you can try to identify a group that will include your purchases at a small mark up (we're talkin' $3.00 for the entire group) and have your tickets waiting in Will Call. This message board could be the communications link for such groups. Save yourself some dough and see what your a cappella friends can help with.

We apologize for this confusion, but we'll know better next time. Ticketmaster mark ups are atrocious (about $8 on a single ticket), and we would not encourage anyone to support what looks like a very poor arrangement Newman Center has got themselves into.

Help CVJS make this one of the most successful Harmony Sweepstakes in Denver history. Join us on March 6 at 7pm for eight spectacular a cappella singing groups. Just decide to show up and you'll be doing yourself and us a favor and making it obvious to Newman Center that they are not sufficiently servicing the community events that ought to be playing there.

Bottom line? I guess there are two: Support the Sweeps! Have fun on Saturday, March 6!

It's almost here, folks.

This Saturday night at Gates Concert Hall in Denver, a once a year pop a cappella happening takes place. And you shouldn't wait another whole year to catch this show. Eight great Western area vocal groups will take the stage and one of them will take the Championship of the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes. Over $8,000 in valuable prizes are at stake

There's still time (but not much) to get tickets for this show. In fact, call 888-WIZ-CVJS and leave us a message and we'll have your tickets waiting at the door. Why pay Ticketmaster big bucks when we'll absolutely guarantee you a seat IF YOU CALL! Then you'll have a Will-Call, admission due envelope at the door. It's as easy as that.

The 900 beautiful seats in this acoustically perfect hall are general admission, so first come, first served. Seats are $18 for regular admission, $14 for students and seniors, and $14 for a group of 15 or more, no matter the ages involved. Call the box office for directions and questions at 303-871-7720. No, they won't hold tickets for you over the phone, but we will at 888-949-2857.

The groups are as follows (alphabetically):
Curious Gage (Ft Collins CO)
Face (Boulder CO)
Inpulse (St Paul MN)
Lodo Air Band (Denver CO)
moosebutter (Provo UT)
No Better Cause (Lincoln NE)
Raging Harmonies (Westminster CO)
Transformed (Littleton CO)

Surely that must whet your appetite. Come down this Saturday for the 7pm Gates Hall show.

Stay over for the Afterglow at Hemingway's on South Gaylord Street

Come to Chopper's in Cherry Creek for a Vocal Jam on Sunday at 4pm. FREE; see/hear Sweeps competitors and do your own singing with Director Julie Williams. No experience required

Then wrap up your extended Festival weekend by coming out to Boulder Monday evening to hear the Sweeps Champions at Redfish Brewhouse. Call 303-440-5858 for info and reservations. 7:30pm and 9pm shows. No cover; just fun!

Just a note to let you all know that our organization, CVJS, is apparently not considered to be a "group" in the eyes of the University of Denver Ticketing Operations and therefore, is not authorized to place orders for you as we indicated in a bulletin earlier this week. We specifically withdraw this offer now. Those of you who reserved tickets in our group are of course able to retreive them from our Trinkets and Treasures counter in the lobby of the Hall tonight after 6pm.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

There was a very impressive and well entertained crowd at Gates Concert Hall last evening for the 15th running of the HARMONY SWEEPSTAKES Derby (uh, no -- a cappella competition) that found out-of-state groups faring even better than our Colorado groups. But that's okay. The world of contemporary a cappella is very welcoming of friendly competition, new ideas and groups that want to break into the scene and make it to the top.

The warmth of the friendship between the competing groups was evident as early as Friday evening when several local groups came in for the reception to welcome them to Denver and to act as informal hosts for the weekend festival. But it was even more evident on stage during the Award ceremonies when the 6 big winners were announced amid enthusiastic reception and warm hugs among all of the competitors. It was great fun to be amidst this crowd and to attend the huge Afterglow Celebration following.

Okay, okay, you wanna know who took home the Gold. Well, I gave it away in the subject line above, but here's the official breakdown before it's released to the Associated Press (whom I'm sure will put it on the international wire as soon as they read this).

Our judges were outstanding members of the a cappella and media community from the Denver area and, in one case, "A Cappella Hour" radio host, Brian Michaels all the way from Fargo ND. Julie Williams, outstanding vocal jazz director from the Denver Metro educational community, Norm Silver, founding member of the 17th Avenue Allstars, and Channel 4 Critic-At-Large Greg Moody. They were outstanding.

Awards to individuals were presented in three categories. The judges had to narrow the dozens of potential awardees down to approximately four finalists, all of whom were greeted with enthusiasm by the 600 folks on hand, before the judges decided upon the following winners:

The Jerry Lawson Best Soloist Award went to Matt McDonald of Inpulse (from St Paul, MN) for his great treatment of what may seemed to be the evening's favorite song, "Obsessed."

The Deke Sharon Best Original Arrangement Award was given to Carline Michaud for her chart of "Hazy Shade," sung by the Colorado group Curious Gage (from Fort Collins).

The Jeff Harris Best Original Composition Award was won by Marcus Hansen of Inpulse for his song, "Obsession" (see above).

There was absolutely complete endorsement of these choices and the trophy winners received the acclaim of all present. In addition to their certificates and  the significant recognition and being associated with the names of musical leaders in the a cappella community, these folks received complimentary memberships in the Contemporary A Cappella Society for 2004.

We then moved to the three "group" awards, who received many exciting prizes including air travel, studio recording hours, CD production arrangements, plaques, and certificates of various kinds.

And here were these winners.

Taking home the grand prize, which included several generous musical gifts and the responsibility to represent the Rocky Mountain Regional Sweeps on May 8 in California, was First Place and Flesher-Hinton Music Award champs, Inpulse, all the way from Minnesota. They were astoundingly well prepared and prevailed even from the "opening act" placement which many groups dread, but this 5 guy group ate up with confidence and aplomb.

The second place group was so close it gave the judges a headache and delayed the closing by several minutes as they worked out their priorities. The Runner Up DiscNMakers CD Production Award, including other special prizes, went to Lincoln, NE 6-man group, No Better Cause, who put their moniker into every measure of their a cappella skill.

The usual 'fans-of-a cappella' adulation greeted the Audience Favorite Studio Production Award, which went to probably the most excited and enthusiastic group of the evening, Face, of Boulder, who were psyched beyond their usual buoyant bluster when their great performance was recognized by the fans as the 'group of the evening.'

Of course, there were five other groups and 40 other singers who went home without making the final cut. But their reception by the large crowd in this spectacular venue was wonderful to hear. What receptive fans were there to show their love of a cappella and their appreciation for the skill and effort of all of the performers!  The female gospel quartet, Transformed, were themselves transforming for us all in their exciting interpretation of known and original selections. The mixed 6-voice LoDo Air Band showed its remarkable resilience in an hugely exciting set that included the most original songs of the contest. And what can we say about moosebutter, who were warmly received by the crowd -- as they always are -- and provided hilarious off-the-wall humor and some off-the-wall harmony for us all. Curious Gage had refined its set to communicate exactly who and what they were to very enthusiastic reception. The show closed with a raging finale from high school-aged mixed septet, Raging Harmonies who were up to the challenge and brought the audience along for their ride before the adjudication began.

Yes, it was a night for the guys, as it turned out, with only one of the awards going to a lady, who wasn't even in the group she arranged for. However, the hosts and, to my thinking, stars of the evening showed their winning form and for many, the road to the future. Groove Society, stunning as 2003 Rocky Mountain Harmony Champs, demonstrated even better than last year 'how it's done' with an ear-bending close jazz harmony set while the judges were doing their thing. The audience could only wonder if this year's winner might come back to host with the excitement and charm of this very professional ensemble. They truly are the tops in a cappella excellence.

Another star of the evening was perpetual Master of Ceremonies, Robert Johnson, who gave the show its credibility and style. We call him "Mr. Smooth." He was ever reliable and ever on the money. Robert knows his a cappella and can be counted on to bring the audience along for the ride. The Colorado Vocal Jazz Society, producers of the event, were exhausted, but greatly excited by the excellent show they managed to pull off. Of course, the stars were the hard working singers, but we can all appreciate the hundreds of hours over 44 volunteers offered up to make the show what it was.

By the way, if you want to catch both the 2004 Champs and the Runner Up groups, both from out of state (so you won't see them for awhile, but we hope they'll find their way back), come to Bolder A Cappella at Redfish Brewhouse on 13th Street off the Pearl Street Mall on Monday night -- yes, tomorrow evening. No Better Cause agreed to delay their departure to do the 7:30pm show, and Inpulse will show us what it's all about at the second show at 9:15pm. Don't miss this very special opportunity.

Whew! It certainly was a Sweeps to remember!

I'm sure you're getting tired of hearing from me, but last night cannot go by without a last word on our Harmony Sweeps guests.

At precisely 7:30pm I introduced to a packed Redfish crowd the 2004 Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweeps Runner Up group, No Better Cause, who experienced a huge ovation from Coloradans who love a cappella.

Their hour long performance gave us an even better idea of why they took home their prestigious award, selected from a field of eight strong and eager competitors. My word for their success is smooth blend and balance, with beautiful close harmony intonation from a "couldn't-be-nicer" group of Nebraska's very best a cappella vocalists. The crowd couldn't get enough, giving them a standing ovation as their set drew to a close about 8:35pm.

The day before, No Better Cause had lent their talents to our Colorado A Cappella Vocal Jam in Denver, including opening the program with a sweet and sincere National Anthem -- a fine arrangement, probably by Nate Kellison or another of the group. It was different than any I've heard and well received by the Chopper's and Vocal Jam patrons. Their willingness to join in for the whole weekend was a tribute to their friendship, although Adam's (I think) wearing that NEBRASKA jersey in town was a little hard for the Buffs to take.

No Better Cause, Nate, Adam, Luke, the two Zacks and Justin (a Nebraska Justin?) left before the second show, because Lincoln is a long drive and a couple of them had to be at work, presumably by 6am!

Inpulse originally had not been available for the Bolder A Cappella date, but Matt McDonald sent me email on Friday saying they could actually do a second show if we wished, since their Monday date was in nearby Longmont and should be over by 8:30pm. We confirmed that at the Sweeps and they were on for the late show, hopefully at 9:15pm. Most of the crowd stayed over and were joined by lots of folks who wanted to hear the Champs. It was a bit of a wait, but LoDo Air Band, Face and Allstars members kept the party going with some vocal jam stuff of their own, thanks to Christine Young. We put watchers out on the streets and the guys arrived about a half hour late, but ready to knock down the doors.

Inpulse had spent the whole day at Silvercrest High School working with aspiring group singers in the very young music program at this new school. Then they had done a 7pm packed house fundraiser for parents and friends, so by 9:45pm they should have been getting some rest, but they had agreed to come to Redfish, and they were there. Their hour long set was a revelation to many. The depth of their rep (the group has been together formally for 10 months), their energy, the stylish arrangements and original songs, and their rapport with the enthusiastic crowd were an immediate explanation for what the judges had seen in their performance.

This is a group to be reckoned with at the Sweeps Finals. It was hard to let them go when they were through, except they weren't actually through. When I left at 12:15am, there were still Colorado and Inpulse singers winding down, sharing stories and wishing each other good luck with their singing careers.

I can say right now two things: 1) Inpulse will be back to host an exciting Rocky Mountain Sweeps around this time next year -- for sure. Got them to commit right on the Redfish stage. 2) We will have powerful representation at the Sweeps Finals in May, and it will be shocking to a lot of folks across the country when Inpulse takes home the National Champion banner as proud (yes, they are) Rocky Mountain Champs of 2004 a cappella.

Ten months ago, no one would have thought that, including Matt, Marcus, Mike, Gabe and Paul. Now they know they can do it (and so do we), and there are going to be some surprised folks in the Bay Area on May 9 -- the morning after.

Wait and see.

We at CVJS want to thank Redfish owner, Steve Shenk, for his endorsement of a cappella in providing a welcome home for groups and fans in the Denver Metro area. The urban a cappella band THREE 5 AND 6, www.three5and6.com is
actively seeking a bass to replace an outgoing member and is looking
to add a 6th member -- another tenor. The band is located in
Sacramento, CA and is currently making a push for full-time status
within the year.

This all male group imitates the full depth of instrumental sounds
found in a classic R&B or funk band as opposed to the
traditional "blended, one-voice" A Cappella sound. Their powerful
beats and bass drive a truly dynamic musical experience that fully
engages the listener.

THREE 5 AND 6 performs their own original music with a writing style
that displays a wide range of influences from Stevie Wonder and The
Gap Band to The Roots and KRS-One. They have been voted audience
favorite three times in as many attempts at the SF Harmony Sweeps and
their recently released debut CD "Urban A Cappella" is receiving
incredible reviews.

If you are interested or know of someone who might be, please contact

This quarter's distribution will total at least 1,000 issues, so it's a great deal. Ads (and the New Wizard Oil Combination gig money) help to fund the newsletter, so it's a worthwhile opportunity for you all.

Remember, deadline is Monday. Send all info and questions to rjsharette@.... Please do not reply to the message board.

Thanks for supporting A Cappella in Colorado. Watch for your issue within about two weeks.

How are drummers like philosophers?
They both perceive time as an abstract concept.
