Hello folks,

It's that time again. Time for your input for the Colorado Songster Summer (July) newsletter.

While we accumulate a lot of dates and info ourselves, please don't take for granted that your info will get in the newsletter without your input. We WILL publish any dates in Colorado that you send us, so let's have it! Read on:

The Colorado Vocal Jazz Society supports CASA activities in Colorado, helping with projects like the National Championship of Collegiate A Cappella and the Harmony Sweepstakes. We also sponsor special vocal jazz and contemporary a cappella events, maintain a website for CASA-Colorado, operate this message board and publish a quarterly newsletter for CVJS members and Colorado members of CASA. Frankly, this is all made possible completely by volunteer effort and funds provided by CD sales of one of your colleague groups, the New Wizard Oil Combination, as well as modest outside contributions to our non-profit foundation, CVJS.

The next issue of the Colorado Songster will be distributed by mail in late July. You should have received the previous issue in April (if we have your accurate snailmail address; if not, send it!). In addition, we try to funnel dates and information to CASA's International Newsletter (the CAN) which is published bi-monthly. We need your help to keep all this information flowing.

If you have Colorado-based events/concerts for August thru November which should be listed in the Songster calendar and the CAN or are worthy of a feature article in either, please get the pertinent info to me this week:

for the CO Songster: July 3
for the CAN: July 10

In addition, if possible, your calendar listing will be included in the CVJS/CASA-Colorado website which you can reach at http://cvjs.org
Please send your information to me immediately. Event listings should be in the following format:

Day(s), Date(s): time(s)
Program and/or Group Name
Venue name, City; admission?

In addition, the Songster publishes a classified section briefly announcing audition or membership opportunities as well as individual interests in a cappella participation. Listings are also due by March 28. Please send them in the following format:

Auditions:
What parts are needed for type/size of group
Group name, brief details
Contact name, phone, email

Interest:
Individual name, sex, voice
What you're looking for
Contact name, phone, email

Please respond to this email at info@.... There is no charge for these services. We're happy to try to help in growing the a cappella experience in Colorado.

Here's a quick last minute notice to a cappella groups who are still gigging in the summertime.

"Old Town Arvada" has just decided to put together a Thrusday evening a cappella series similar to the Pearl Street summer activity called "Bands on the Bricks."

Outdoors, very informal, early evening (6-8), with stage and sound provided, among families and friends in the neighborhood. A great opportunity for groups looking for a place to sing and a little bit of money to show for it. The association is paying $150 for each group -- not what you may usually get, but if it provides a chance to break in new material or test new members, give it a go.

If your band is interested, please call Larry Luciano, who is booking the Old Town Series, starting next Thursday, July 15 and running for at least a month. It would be great to have some of our going groups join this series to see what it's all about.

If you have questions or are ready to book a Thursday, call Larry Luciano at his place of business, "Fiori di Flavio" 303-424-3033 or email him at lluciano@.... He can fill you in on the details. All brands are welcome, from doo wop to vocal jazz to R&B to Barbershop!

And let us know on the message board what it's all about!

Experienced perfromers starting new four to five all male voice
group in the south Denver area.

A little bit about us and what we are looking to do. We are two
tenors who currently perform in the Denver area. Over the last few
years we have been focusing on musical theater and other musical
entertainment but our true love is a cappela. I (Dan) have been in
multiple groups around the country including the 1996 Bay Area
Regional Harmony Sweepstakes Champions "The New Originals". Chris
has been been singing and performing in groups in pretty much every
country in the world (trust me - he'll tell you). In an ideal world
we would find one "true" bass and a couple baritones to equal out
the sound but our main goal is to have fun. If that means a group of
five tenors then we will do some screaming high arrangments. We are
not stuck on any style or sound but we don't want to be too VP
heavy. Not that we won't use vocal percussion but we want to get
back to the roots of a capella singing (Harmony). We are going to
setup auditions as they come in so no set date. Please respond to
this posting or use the contact info below to tell us about yourself
and/or ask any questions you may have. Hope to hear from you soon.
Let's have some fun.

Well, For some reason Yahoo deactivated my dtesta account. I had it
for 7 years and now I can't seem to get a hold of anyone at yahoo to
fix it. So, in the meantime I created a new yahoo account so that
people could respond to this post. There are some folks that already
responded to the posting so if you could take a quick second and
send me a reminder of where we left off that would be great (I lost
all my emails too). If you haven't responded yet and you wanted to
please use this new address. Sorry for the mess. Please feel free to
forward this message to any friends you may have that are looking to
do some singing.

Thanks

This is an invitation to a special Sound of the Rockies Guest Night to be held Thursday evening, July 22, 7:00pm at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 8817 S. Broadway.

Excited with our performance in Louisville Kentucky, and a new ranking of 6th in the World of Barbershop Harmony, we want to extend our ranks with men who love to sing. As we increase the size of our chorus, we also plan to increase our sound and our national ranking. We are therefore planning a Guest Night to introduce men and students to the chorus and the acappella harmony we love to sing. It is our goal to add another 30 or more singers to our fraternity of song, and we need your help.

We are asking your help in locating singers who would be interested in considering joining Sound of the Rockies! If you are a singer, we would enjoy seeing you at this event. If you know a singer from a church choir, school choir, community chorus, etc. please forward this message to them.
(As a side note, please consider that our range of age extends from 14 to 82.  We welcome any male singer who is interested in this world class chorus.)

Just a reminder that we welcome guests, singers and non singers alike, at all rehearsals, so if you can not make the July 22 Guest Night, but are interested in the chorus, please drop by any rehearsal. Thank you.

For more information about the Sound of the Rockies Guest Night and a map to the rehearsal hall, go to http://www.soundoftherockies.com/Announce.htm

Curious Gage, Fort Collins' premiere vocal band, is looking for a new member!  Our second tenor Christian Nielsen, one of our founding members, will be leaving in October to pursue performing opportunities in New York.  Though his exceptional performance and vocal skills will be missed, we must wish him all the best as he makes the difficult transition from mountains to subways.

Curious Gage is now officially looking for a strong solo and ensemble singer to join our ranks.  For those of you who don't know us, we are a five-member vocal band based out of Fort Collins, CO, and sing a variety of pop, rock, and soul.  In 18 months that we've been making music we've enjoyed performances at the Denver Coliseum, Redfish Brewery, Aurora City of Commerce, City of Fort Collins, Sunset Event Center, countless private parties, 97.9 FM, Carousel Dinner Theatre, and the illustrious Harmony Sweepstakes (where we took home the Best Original Arrangement Award).

We are looking for the following characteristics in applicants:

  • Tenor range
  • A strong solo voice
  • A great ear for harmony and tricky chords
  • Powerful stage presence
  • A desire to perform 3-4 times a month with a professional vocal band

If interested please contact our General Manager Rod, at rod@..., and we will schedule an audition time, or visit our website for more details at www.curiousgage.com

Hi All!

I'm coming into Denver the first week of August after
being away for a number of years. I used to work with The Blenders,
The 17th Ave. All-Stars, The Dirty Blonds, etc. " back in the day "
at Acapellas' on 17th and Humboldt but am told that venue is history.

who's performing that week.

The National Championship of High School A Cappella (NCHSA), presented
by Maestro Consulting, is now hiring State Coordinators
for the 2004-2005 season. Like other a cappella competitions, NCSHA
produces a nationwide tournament of shows culminating in a National
Finals performance to crown the Champion. State
Coordinators will be responsible for planning and executing the
State Championship show with the help of their Division Coordinator.

In the past, people have inquired about our program's affiliation
with Varsity Vocals/ICCA. While we are big fans of their programs, (our
executive director is a former ICCA champion), we are not directly
affiliated, and currently investigating possible/necessary changes to
make this distinction clear and make sure we're not stepping on
ICCA's toes.

For more information about the positions, or about NCHSA itself,

Hey peeps, this is Tim "aren't you in moosebutter?" Jones.

I wanted to extend a special invitation to all male singers, and especially
those in the Boulder area, to come join in the CU Golden Buffalos Men's
Chorus. I'm assistant conducting the group this year, and it looks to be a
great time.

The group meets Monday nights 7:15-9:15 in the Macky on CU campus. Ron
Revier, long-time choral director at Fairview High School, directs the
group, and he is great. The group is open to men of all ages, skill-levels
and appearance. The group does one Fall concert (Nov. 7) and participates
in the CU Holiday Festival Dec. 3-5. You can take it for credit if you're a
student, or just come for fun. It's 2 hours of weekly vocal love! Manly
love! I mean that in a good way!

I want to send out a special invitation to male members of the CU campus a
cappella groups - come out for a couple hours of no-pressure fun, build your
vocal strength and training, and help build a strong relationship between
the Music department and the a cappella scene. Hey, why not have all the
men in your group come to choir? That would make you TWICE AS STUDLY.

Email me if you have questions.

Thanks!

Tim "ticklish ego" Jones
