The Christian A Cappella group, CROSS EXAMINED, is providing two shows Monday evening as part of the "Bolder A Cappella" series at Redfish in Boulder.

Please come and show your support for this excellent and very entertaining music. The location is right downtown at 2027 13th Street in Boulder, a half block north of the Pearl Street Mall. Owner Steve Shenk and his staff go out of their way to support CrossX and the message they bring to the enthusiastic family oriented audience who enjoy this kind of praiseworthy "message" music.

This is a free concert, actually 2 of them, one at 7:30pm and another at 9pm. Cross Examined is the only Christian/Gospel group invited to participate in the series, and the reason will be clear when you hear the ten-voice harmony they provide. Cross Examined will be singing 12-15 songs in each program, and they will be of varied style and origin, so don't be surprised when the group comes our with pop melodies or a Blue Grass rendition or two. If you don't hear a particular selection you like on the first show or if you want to have a favorite repeated, let them know at intermission and chances are they'll provide it in the 9pm set.

There is no cost for the programs at this family-friendly venue, and you will be treated as an honored guest whether you have refreshments or not. The food, however, is something very special, so you may want to come early for dinner. We recommend in that case calling 303-440-5858 to make reservations.

Monday, October 4th at 7:30 and 9pm.
This is how Gospel swings on the Front Range -- and then some . . "Defintely the best group of its kind in the west:"

EXTREME MEASURES

When University of Colorado students gather anywhere in Boulder to hear contemporary a cappella, Extreme Measures will be there either as audience or singers. Enthusiastic fans of popular a cappella music, they are themselves stars of many shows and competitions. They shine at the annual campus bash called "Acappelooza" and 3 times in as many years have represented Rocky Mountain college groups in California for the College a cappella "Varsity Vocals" competition.. After three years of trying to include a died-in-the-wool Doo-Wop vocal band in the Bolder A Cappella series, we have snagged a real one in this group!

THE SLIDERS!

Yes, children of the 60s/70s, here's the group you have been asking for. The Sliders know all those tunes you crave -- and many other styles and genres too. Since the 80s, these guys have been singing these great tunes, but not all together on the same stage. Some alums of Denver's "Blenders," along with some new guys, have recreated the sounds many of you have asked to hear.

Here's your chance. Come by Redfish tonight and take yourself back a decade -- or two -- or three -- and have some fun with this quintet of excellent in-tune singers who will thoroughly entertain you.

Hey, Colorado A Cappella fans!

Coming your way soon: More info about the 2005 Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweeps!

After mailing the latest newsletter, we realized www.cvjs.org is malfunctioning (a big word for "stuck").

We'll get that fixed soon, but if you want to do any of the following, you can begin now:

Audition info and materials: Call 888-949-2857 and leave your name, phone and, if you wish, email address. We can send out your packet via pdf files or snail mail, but you must return it in hard copy with enclosures.

Schedule: Yes, it's Easter weekend. Can't be helped. It's really hard to find an acceptable (read sight lines, acoustics, comfort) venue for such a huge undertaking in the Denver area (wait until CU gets their new concert hall built). Meanwhile, plan on that holiday weekend to make your foray to Denver on Friday and go home on Monday so you won't miss any part of the party.

Tickets: On sale at TicketWeb (NOT Ticketmaster) by phone, website or at nine Front Range locations (list below -- service charges apply, but nothing like Ticketmaster). Group sales for 15 or more will save money too, but they won't be set up until January.

Buy soon before the rush.

Barbershop Chorus and Quartets to Perform

An outstanding program of music and entertainment await as the Boulder
Timberliners Chorus present their fall show. The Timberliners have created
a montage of great songs around the theme of "A Tribute to Big Band Swing"
performed by the Chorus and quartets from the area. This is entertainment

humorous hits from the Big Band era.
An exciting special treat is our featured guest quartet, NeXus. NeXus is

Dear Bobby McFerrin Fan,

Thanks for your continued interest in Bobby's music. Lots of great stuff going on, so read on!

SING & PLAY

In the "Sing & Play" section of bobbymcferrin.com, check out the two interactive games that allow you to play and combine different parts of songs created by Bobby. The first is the familiar "Don't Worry, Be Happy". The second is a funky little riff called "Just Enough", for which Bobby personifies an eight piece, one-man band! (Note: please wait one or two minutes for each game to load)

THE BOBBY SHOP

The Bobby Shop is now fully open for business, offering Bobby's CD's, choral music, DVD's and more. Need to find a holiday gift for a music lover? Look no further!

New additions include the CD of "The Concert for Europe", featuring Bobby leading the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as our exclusive DVD's "Bravo Profile" and "Try This at Home". We plan to add more DVDs in the near future, including the 1989 concert video "Spontaneous Inventions", his 2003 Montreal Jazz Festival performance, and some European imports. Stay tuned. Have ideas for items to sell? Let us know here.

MASTERCLASS NEWS
Last Spring's 5-day masterclass at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY was such a huge success, that Bobby has agreed to offer it again. Last year's session was Omega's highest enrolled event, attracting 165 singers from as far away as California, France, and Australia!   The 5-day class will take place June 13-17 2005, again in Rhinebeck, NY (100 miles north of New York City).  Together with Voicestra members Joey Blake, Rhiannon, Dave Worm, Roger Treece, and Judi Donaghy, Bobby will lead sessions focusing on singing, improvisation, rhythm, and creativity. No experience necessary, just a willingness to sing and create! For questions regarding the masterclass, send an email here.

To be contacted once registration begins, please call 1-800-944-1001 or fill out this Omega Institute form. We hope to have a similar offering in Europe sometime in the future.

TOURING NEWS

Bobby's touring schedule is packed from now through the end of this coming summer - be sure catch him when he's near you! Some highlights include:

~ A rare North American appearance with VOICESTRA at Philadelphia's Kimmel Center on January 16 '05.

~ Several appearances in the Rocky Mountains states including the University of Colorado Artist Series at Macky Hall on January 27, 2005.

~ European tour with one of Bobby's favorite orchestras, the Munich Radio Philharmonic Feb 26 - March 6 '05. Cities include Baden Baden, Düsseldorf, Munich, and Zürich.

~ Bobby's first ever visit to Mexico City at the Festival de Mexico on April 18-21'05.

You can look up more detailed touring information in the "Travelin'" section of the website.

Thanks again for your interest in Bobby. Keep singin' and best wishes for the holidays!

These are good enough to pass on to all Colorado group singers:

1. Keep your vocal cords moist at all times:

a. Consume at least 8 glasses of water a day.

b. Stay away from excessive amounts of diuretics (substances that dehydrate your body and your vocal cords). Two of the number one culprits are Alcohol and Caffeine. So…think twice before you have that second cup. Oviously, the most serious problem may be nasal sprays or drops that invariably dry out those vocal chords just when you need them moist and flexible.

c. The real serious singer will sleep with a humidifier to make sure the vocal chords are kept moist during sleep.

2. Get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

A singer's body is his/her instrument. Mistreat your instrument and it will show. Make sure to give your body and voice the proper rest it deserves.

3. Singers must not smoke.

Among other incredible health concerns, smoking dries out the mucous membrane lining of the nose & throat which adversely affects the voice. Just "don't" do it!

4. Do not overuse or mistreat the voice.

This would include talking over loud noises such as groups of people and loud machinery. Just like any other muscle, your vocal membranes and muscles can suffer from fatigue. In other words, don't talk too much!

It is also stressful to the voice to talk too quickly, so slow it down! Those people that have no choice but to tax their voices on a daily basis -- singers, professional speakers, teachers, cheerleaders, auctioneers, etc. --- need to protect the voice. http://A2ZVocalhealth.com.

5. Protect yourself from stress and nervousness prior to performances.

We suggest the following to fight the gig day jitters:

a. Develop a checklist for gig preparation. It might include dry cleaning, reviewing lyrics, or getting your hair cut!

b. Leave a few minutes early for the gig or rehearsal so you can focus prior to the performance. (If this is a new location, be sure you have the proper directions and contact phone number ready ahead of time.)

c. Develop a habit of warming-up with an organized vocal exercise program on the way to the gig to properly prepare your voice.

d. Prepare materials to help you during an "off night" or for special circumstances - lyric books, practice CDs and tapes.

e. Have promotional material such as business cards and flyers organized so that you can access them easily at the appropriate time. Marketing yourself as a singer is as much a part of the business as singing and performing well.

Remember, properly preparing yourself allows you to focus all your energy on your performance.

6. Don't eat or drink milk products before performing.

Sorry, that means no chocolate or ice cream, among some other great tasting foods. These products cause the mucous membrane lining of the vocal cords to create a great deal of mucous that covers your vocal cords. In case you can't guess or don't already know, that makes it very hard to sing well.

7. Keep yourself healthy and virus free.

We suggest eating right, exercising regularly (don't forget that cardiovascular work to improve your breathing!), and taking a quality vitamin supplement each and every day! Remember, a singer's body is his or her instrument! A finely tuned and maintained instrument will perform at a much higher level than an instrument that has been neglected.

8. Never sing without properly warming up.

If you were running in a marathon, would you begin without stretching your legs? Of course not. Doing this would risk reduced performance and possible cramping that would take you completely out of the race. The muscles associated with the voice organ require the same treatment. Just like those hamstrings, your voice will reward you for taking the time to properly warm up before strenuous use.

9. Remember to smile.

Smiling not only helps with tone placement of the singing voice, it also improves your attitude! Try it! It really works. It's infectious too!

10. Enjoy life and celebrate every accomplishment no matter how small it may seem.

Sing for fun, sing because you love it, sing because you can. Share your voice with the world and enjoy your journey as you learn not just to sing, but to sing with impact!

BOBBY McFERRIN IS ARTIST SERIES SEASON HIGHLIGHT

CU’s Artist Series begins the spring half of its 2004-2005 season with a performance by virtuoso vocalist Bobby McFerrin in Boulder’s Macky Auditorium Thursday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. This is the premiere event of CU's splendid 2004-05 season.  Tickets for this performance are extremely limited and will sell out at any time.

Ten-time Grammy Award winner Bobby McFerrin is one of the world's best-known vocal innovators and improvisers, a world-renowned classical conductor, the creator of one of the most popular songs of the late 20th century and a passionate spokesman for music education. His recordings have sold over 20 million copies, and his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea, the Vienna Philharmonic and Herbie Hancock have established him as an ambassador in both the classical and jazz worlds. In 1988 he released the album “Simple Pleasures,” which was his homage to the music of the 1960s. A joyous ditty created on the spot in the recording studio became the phenomenal hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Given this taste of unexpected pop superstardom, Bobby McFerrin seemed to switch gears and decided to take a sabbatical and to begin a serious study of conducting, including lessons with Leonard Bernstein, Gustav Meier and Seiji Ozawa. The enthusiasm, infectious joy, and virtuosity that characterize his solo performances have made McFerrin a successful communicator in the classical music world as well.

In recent years, he has extended his vocal journeys to larger groups of singers—whether trained or not. McFerrin’s solo concerts have always included audience participation; McFerrin sees them not as “singalongs” but as a genuine collaborative process of making music in the moment. For more information including a complete biography and print quality photos visit http://www.bobbymcferrin.com.

A pre-concert conversation with CU-Boulder Instructor of Choral Music Education Sue Williamson will be held before the performance at 6:45 p.m. in Macky Room 102. This event will provide insights into Mr. McFerrin's experience and skills that will expand the excitement of his performance.

The Artist Series, now in its 67th season, has a rich tradition of bringing the finest performers in the world to Boulder’s Macky Auditorium. Past performers on the series have included Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Bell, and the Garth Fagan Dance Company. In addition to serving audiences with an exciting variety of performances, the Artist Series has an important educational mission, including outreach events planned in conjunction with almost every concert.

The CVJS Afterglow is one of a series of events designed for audiences to 'digest' exciting performances and, when possible, honor the skills of the performer. CVJS cannot guarantee Mr. McFerrin will attend (his taxing tour schedule leaves little room for parties), but the event will feature a short but rewarding program by Colorado's premiere vocal jazz ensemble,Groove Society, skilled in performance and training, and 2003 Champions of the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes! Join us in our salute to these wonderful performers and the music they love so much. (see above)

First of all, on behalf of In The Buff, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who
came to the ICCA Divisional competition last Saturday. There were some great
groups, and for those of you who don't know, BYU's Vocal Point took first.

Now to the business at hand.

In The Buff would like to invite you to its 11th Birthday Conert. That's right,
one of CU-Boulder's premier all-male a cappella groups has officially been
around for over a decade. As many of you might know, our birthday concerts are
always free. It's our way of thanking you for supporting our love of (or
possibly addiction to) a cappella.

This year, however, we would like to do more than just share our music with the
Colorado a cappella community. We want to extend a helping hand to the victims
of the tsunami disaster. Therefore, we will be taking donations at the door,
and every cent you donate will go to the Red Cross's tsunami relief fund.

Who: In The Buff
What: 11th Birthday Concert
Where: CU-Boulder campus, Mathematics building, Room 100.
When: Feb. 5 @ 7 p.m.
Cost: Free! We will, however, be taking donations for the Red Cross Tsunami
Relief Fund.

We hope to see you at the show. And remember, everything is always better ... In
The Buff.
