So, you want to know what's happening a cappella-wise in Colorado Springs? Here's your chance!

Bolder A Cappella, Monday night, April 3. 7:30pm and 8:30pm

Redfish Brewhouse, 2027 13th Street, half block north of the Pearl Street Mall. Shows at 7:30 and 8:30 pm.

BACK ROW! from Colorado College with Boulder's Left on Spruce opening.

Back Row, new men's a cappella group on campus, is heading up to Boulder Monday night to show us what they've got. We're hear they're very good and want to get to know some of our CU and Boulder area singers.

In addition, the new group so well received at the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweeps to weeks ago, Left on Spruce, will be joining the party. There are some familiar faces in LoS for those in the Boulder area, so come out and tell them what you think.

We're looking forward to a very musical evening and we need you there to join the fun. Plan to enjoy another Bolder A Cappella evening in the friendly family confines of the Redfish Music Room. A Cappella has so many faces, we always have variety to offer and many new a cappella experiences to share.

Stop by for either show (7:30 or 8:30 pm) and give these groups our support. Call 303-4405858 for a table reservation. Great entertainment, great food, great atmosphere.

See you Monday night!

Some of Colorado's most popular vocal bands invade Boulder regularly on specific Mondays. Many of these groups perform mainly for private parties and are not generally available to the public. Bolder A Cappella is produced by the Colorado Vocal Jazz Society at the popular Redfish Brewhouse, a family spot with excellent sight lines and acoustics, competitive prices and no cover. Here's a unique opportunity to sample what's out there. Join us for the fun

moosebutter seeks bass for full-time position beginning June 2006

maybe a different voice part 'cuz one of us can sing bass, too, but he
doesn't really want to. So I guess you can inquire if you are not of
the bass persuasion. Or if you're a bass in The Persuasions.

You: Bass singer, a cappella experience, preferably able to percuss
(limited) at the same time, and of course you are an acutely
intelligent person who will look smashing in a red jumpsuit and
headband. Formal vocal training good, real-world performing experience
nice, cooking skills a definite plus, comedy experience might be cool
but it was probably just you doing an old Bill Cosby routine at your
school talent show so that doesn't count, comedy and music
improvisation skill also kosher, writing and arranging abilities blah
blah brilliant sight-reader yada yada perfect pitch sumthin mumble
michael bolton. If you are deft at live-animal eating or
double-jointed-ness please keep it to yourself.

Us: moosebutter

The deal-ey-oh:

Submit resume and audio samples by May 15, sooner if possible

Please include a detailed list of experience and skills - list any all
things you can bring to the group, including business areas.
Instruments played, etc. Also, personal experience and favorite
musical topics you would most like to present in context of an
educational program, and how you would present them (musical examples
singable by 3-4 dudes would be good here).

Oooo! Oooo! Ooo! Also, yeah, if you are proficient at setting
up/working sound equipment and/or recording and editing recordings,
then we shall hug you tenderly, brush you with olive oil, and staple
you to the wall so all generations can adore your skills.

If we schedule an audition we'll expect you to learn a bunch of songs
and come sing with us to see if we like you.

More: We are clean-living (no drinking, no smoking, no drugs, no loose
women, no kung-fu movies unless from the 70's) and expect our show and
our business lives to reflect this. Foul humor, unethical behavior,
poor role-modeling for kids will not be tolerated. There will be small
kids on the road with us, and we'll be performing for lots of kids as
well as families in addition to our sold-out arena shows with our
opening band IRON MAIDEN. We don't even swear, so don't apply if
that's too weird for you.

You'll be expected to learn a lot of music and do a lot of shows
quickly, jive with the chemistry and direction of the group, and
occasionally prance like a noble antelope if that's what the paying
public wants to see. Health and personal commitments should allow for
rigorous touring regime.

If hired, you will be asked to relocate to the Boulder, Colorado area,
learn a ton of music on your own, take part in continuing voice lessons
and musical study, and maintain your own happy life when not on the
road or performing.

Further details can certainly be discussed.

Wow!

I just found out the House Jacks are coming to Colorado this weekend!

If you haven't heard of the House Jacks, you're missing the most popular rock vocal band out there anywhere -- one of the premiere contemporary acappella groups in the country,

They are coming to Colorado College Saturday this Saturday, April 8th for a performance at 7:30pm in Packard Hall, the college concert venue. Tickets are $15 and you can buy them at the door -- in fact only at the door.

If you can get within driving distance of Colorado College this Saturday -- near downtown Colorado Springs -- make it a priority to get over to Packard for an exciting and very entertaining program.

Tell 'em Deke Sharon sent you. Well, not exactly <g> But you can say 'hello' to Deke if you make it. He's the founder of most things a cappella and that includes the House Jacks, CASA, arrangements services, -- the list goes on.

I'll be there. The weather is great for a drive south.

As part of the huge 49th celebration of the American A Cappella Alliance singers' weekend called Spring Sing, a group born in Colorado and known worldwide as "m-pact" -- and the exciting 2003 Rocky Mountain a cappella champs, "Groove Society" -- join in what may be called the best a cappella vocal jazz concert ever held -- anywhere.

These groups, as many of you know, are just that good! Here's what else is special about this program Friday evening, May 5 7:30 pm at the Boulder Theater:
  • m-pact is celebrating its 10th anniversary as the leading six-voice star of contemporary a cappella following their 1996 win as National Harmony Sweepstakes Champion -- also the 10th anniversary of their last Spring Sing appearance on their way to those same National Finals.
  • m-pact is ready to release its newest album at the Boulder Theater that night -- one of the biggest CD Release parties anyone's ever scheduled in Colorado.
  • m-pact is celebrating these activities in Colorado, where much of its large fan base resides, by including six days of school residencies here as part of their visit, thanks to Flesher-Hinton Music Company and Frontier Airlines. Call 888-949-2857 to find out about this.
  • Groove Society, well respected in Colorado and lately far beyond our borders, will make its own "impact" on the national audience of singers who will be on hand at the Boulder Theater for this signal event.
  • Groove Society's significant reputation, based upon their members' Grammy Award winning experience in "Vocal Jazz I" at University of Northern Colorado, extends beyond vocal jazz to superb renditions in a variety of Latin, Blues, Rock and R&B selections from their initial CD.
Susan Gatschet Reese of Denver Jazz station KUVO says it right: "Colorado's favorite a cappella m-port is definitely m-pact."

Tickets for this performance are being gobbled up in groups (among those groups the 200+ singers coming from across the country), so consider ordering your group or individual tickets right now. There are several ways to be ensured of attending:
Tickets prices range from $20 general admission to $15 for students and seniors, $14 for groups of 15 and $12 for official school groups of 25 or more.

The weekend events are as exciting as the opening concert. Go to www.cvjs.org or directly to www.springsing.org to read details about all of the vocal group happenings May 5 to 7. Register for the whole weekend at $175 and attend four fun programs, with meals and included.

Watch for additional information or call tollfree 888-WIZ-CVJS with questions.

Just don't NOT do something to participate in this great musical experience.

ABC Channel 7, Denver

If you have what it takes to become America's next singing sensation.
ABC is looking for you! A summer reality series called "The OT" is
holding auditions in Denver.

Producers are looking for male or female singers, 18 years old or
older. You can sing one song of your choice at the audition -- which
cannot be an original song -- as well as one song from the producer's
selected song list. (List can be found www.abcmusicproject.com.

The auditions will be held on Saturday, April 22 at Benders Tavern on
314 East 13th Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m

ABC describes this new summer reality series as "American Idol" meets
"Big Brother." The contestants will live together in one house during
the competition. Each episode will include the competition footage, as
well as the drama that goes on inside the house behind the scenes.

The contestants will attend a fully-functioning music academy that
turns aspiring singers into music stars through professional training.
The music academy will offer vocal coaching and celebrity mentors who
will turn potential into talent in a state-of-the-art training and
recording facility.

This series is scheduled to air this summer, but no word yet as to
what day or time period. There will be eight one-hour episodes, plus a
weekly 30-minute results show.

The series winner will receive a recording contract with a major
record label. The show is being produced by Endemol USA, the producer
of the hit reality series Deal or No Deal, Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition, Fear Factor and Big Brother.

Greetings a cappella lovers,

Last evening's Bolder A Cappella programs at Redfish Brewhouse in Boulder were a special treat, uniting two excellent high school ensembles (8 in each) in a two part show at 7:30pm, followed by a second show at 8:30pm with entirely different repertoires by the same fine groups. Raging Harmonies from Westminster High and 6 Guys Named Blake from Boulder's Fairview High were almost competitive in the way they did their max for the audience of fans and members of the general community. Our thanks to Redfish owner Steve Shenk for making this series so welcome.

There was a comfortably large house in spite of the inclement weather and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening. It was a good feeling all around and the kids were each appreciative of the other's talents, both as groups and individual performers. It will be some time before we will have that fresh and fun attitude expressed, although Bolder A Cappella is always invigorating and enjoyable.

So, why am I writing all of you?

Because in the course of the evening an audience member came up to me to ask questions regarding the upcoming May 5-7 Spring Sing in the Rockies and asked if the performers were going to benefit from the "singers' workshops" that I had described in my evening introduction; I replied that they were welcome but that the whole enterprise was an expensive venture and that we had to charge for almost all of the events including the two workshops by members of the world renowned group, m-pact. The same person came back up to me later and handed me a check for $250 to "help do what we do." I called this morning to express my gratitude and asked how he felt the money should be used. He suggested that 25 "a cappella kids" like those he had heard Monday night be sponsored specifically to attend the May 6 workshops as his anonymous guests.

So, I am here announcing that the first 25 students who would like to attend the m-pact workshops (there are two to choose from) at 3 pm on Saturday, May 6 in the Hotel Boulderado in Boulder should send me an email with names and schools listed. We will respond with specific info and set aside event badges for those individuals at the door to gain admittance to the workshops at no cost.

Teachers may apply on behalf of their students, but we want to be sure these valuable tickets will be used, so please guarantee your students' participation. (No phone reservations please; persons connected with producing SS/Rockies are not eligible.)

And we wish to express appreciation to our Monday evening benefactor for making this possible. We of course wish the whole weekend could be free! It will be an exciting time for all. (see www.cvjs.org for details.)

HELLO VOCAL FANS!

Groove Society would like to invite you to attend one of two evening performances presented by CHSAA (Colorado High School Activities Association). High school choirs from around the state of Colorado will be performing throughout the day. This great event gives these kids a chance to show their best skills off for an enthusiastic crowd and a select group of judges. By the end of the day the judges determine the top few groups and those groups will get to perform again for the public at the evening concert that is finished off with a performance by Groove Society.

Please come out show your enthusiasm for these kids who are the future of vocal singing for Acappella, jazz and other great musical forms.

The article I sent the other day about last Monday's Bolder A Cappella event made the front page of CASA's online A Cappella Almanac. Read it here (link below) and tell your friends. You should also know that the benefactor mentioned is Wade Phelps of Aurora's Phelps Financial Services and a Westminster High graduate, who has provided substantial support to our Spring Sing in the Rockies operation, especially for the m-pact school visit program.

Which is your favorite a cappella group?
In Colorado, information indicates you folks like m-pact best of the groups that come to our state, although many are admired. In fact, Susan Gatschet-Reese of Jazz Radio 89 KUVO says: "Colorado's favorite a cappella import is definitely m-pact." m-pact's many global travels only show that our taste in vocal groups is quite astute. While Europe and other areas of the world may claim them for awhile, they always come home to Colorado when we need them. We manage to steal them away from their LA base a couple of times a year.

Which is your favorite jazz a cappella group in Colorado?
That's a tougher question because there are so many good a cappella groups in our state of all different types and make-up. Folks usually connect with their own musical style preference and follow those groups wherever they appear. But if you're looking at jazz and its range of "Latin to satin", it's hard to find better than our 2003 Harmony Sweeps champs, Groove Society. And that's been proven far and wide now with Groove Society's current travels to Utah, Indiana, Alberta (Medicine Hat) and -- yes -- the Hawaiian International Jazz Festival this August!

That said, where will you be next Friday night? -- when Colorado's "a cappellists" (yes - "us") will be a very exclusive audience for the "dream concert" of the year at the Boulder Theater at 7:30 pm. This is a not-to-be missed event, because it features BOTH of the above groups -- your favorites and those of many others. Don't miss what may be a once in a lifetime chance to hear two of the top vocal groups in the country at one performance.

It would be wise to buy your $20 tickets ($15 for students and seniors) in advance to avoid the huge lines that may exist. Take care of that right now:
~ Stop by the Boulder Theater and pick up your tickets Mon-Fri 3 to 7pm; Sat noon to 5pm.
~ Call the Boulder Theater (303-786-7030) and pay by credit card for Will Call delivery.
~ Go to www.cvjs.org; click on "a cappella m-pact" and print an order form (checks only) or click on "TicketWeb" to purchase tickets online.
~ Stop by any of the 12 TicketWeb box offices along the Front Range to buy tickets right there; call 800-965-4827 for locations.

"a cappella m-pact" won't happen again for a good while, so make this your top choice spring entertainment feature. You will not regret making it to Boulder for this May 5, Friday evening treat.

The first weekend in May has been an exciting period for contemporary a cappella for a long time; 2006 was no exception as vocalists -- more accurately "group singers" -- gathered in Colorado for the 49th annual "Spring Sing."  Yes, that's right: 49 years of Spring Sings in almost that many venues and locales across the country, featuring avocational a cappella ensembles like "Jersey Transit," "Lake Shore Jive" and "Noteworthy" -- as well as more unusual names like the "Grunyons," the "New Wizard Oil Combination" and the "Off Sounders." Many of the group names themselves have been around for over 50 years, while newer ones are mere teenagers at, say 15 years or so. This year's event was called "Spring Sing in the Rockies" for the pretty obvious reason that it was in Boulder, Colorado, hosted by its Colorado representative group, the "New Wizard Oil Combination" through its eleemosynary counterpart, the Colorado Vocal Jazz Society.

And what a weekend it was, featuring impressive appearances by professional groups "m-pact" and "Groove Society" (at the art deco Boulder Theater), with added performances by guest and Boulder's own "3 Story Limit,"  full concerts shared by the visiting performing groups, workshops by Britt Quentin and Trist Curless of m-pact, and great opportunities for "wood-shedding," and comparing notes, CDs and arrangements among the singers and others who attended.
Groove Society members debrief     Fans mob the CD sales of both group's       BOULDER THEATER ANNOUNCES THE BIG EVENT!      The m-pact autograph line streched           The party at the Boulderado Corner Bar

Almost 700 a cappella fans crowded the Boulder Theater for the kick-off concert and party on May 5 -- special because it was also the tenth anniversary of m-pact's success as Champion of the National Harmony Sweepstakes, its 1996 introduction to worldwide attention as one of the most sought after ensembles on earth. m-pact also introduced its long awaited 3rd compact disc, called simply "m-pact," to the assembled singers and fans (to whom they sold almost a year's supply in one evening). The opening set by Groove Society, Colorado's leading a cappella jazz ensemble, clearly indicated they were worthy of their position and likely to be the next breakout group to represent Colorado and its widely renowned University of Northern Colorado jazz program, as were the m-pact guys a number of years before.

The assembled "Spring Sing" groups, members of the American A Cappella Alliance formed just last year to provide an umbrella organization for this type of group, all performed in two separate programs, one featuring four or five brand new arrangements for each, and the other treating audiences to some of their previous ensemble "hits" that spice their programs back in their home states. With those concerts, great meals, camaraderie and practically non-stop singing in lobbies, halls, reception areas and local bars, no one went home from Colorado with much voice left. Of course, the mile high atmosphere (one of the events was titled "A Cappella @ Altitude") challenged all but the locals, although you would never have known with the quality of arrangements and ensemble work also at close to an all time "high."

The AACA (American A Cappella Alliance) affords a new opportunity for ensembles from across the continent, who pursue their music for the joy of singing, to work and perform with the experienced and skillful groups who make up the Alliance. And since one of the past Spring Sings has been in Canada, consider the term "American" as our "place on Earth" rather than the U.S. itself. AACA ensembles are an eclectic bunch, varying from three to 21 singers and almost as many styles or genres of repertoire.  If you believe your group may be interested in considering an AACA affiliation, and the excitement and musical rewards that annual Spring Sings represents, please travel to www.AACAlliance.org and learn more about this Spring Sing and the groups that participated. Then contact the Alliance for more information.

Of course, next year will be a pivotal year for the organization, which will oversee the 50th anniversary of "Spring Sing" -- to be hosted by the "Counterparts" in Philadelphia. If you're a member of a group anything like these, you won't want to miss that kind of musical excitement.

Hi there,
I have been trying to find an acapella group to join for a while now,
and after never finding any audition opportunities in the paper, I
decided to try this! If anyone is interested in forming a group, or
needs either a soprano or alto for their group, or knows of any
auditions that are coming up, please let me know! I am excited to start
attending acapella events that I see posted on this site! This is
great!

Greg is also on the faculty of Julie Williams' amazing "Rocky Mountain Vocal Jazz Camp" that operates this year from July 30 to August 5 at Deer Creek Camp above Evergreen. The program also features New York Voices' "Love You Like a Rock" whose director and baritone is Peter Eldridge, also a RMVJC faculty member.

Group seeks M/F singers and percussionist. Group likes all kinds of
music, long walks on beach, candlelit dinners...oh wait! Just
kidding:

Hi all,

I represent several singers who are looking to form a group. We are
1 guy, 3 girls, and are actively seeking additional singers in
Denver/Boulder local area. Specifically, we are looking for more
guys (but girls are encouraged to try out too), and for a vocal
percussionist (guy or girl). Because half of us are students, and
not in the state at the moment, we are looking to get started in
late August (when the aforementioned students return), but are
currently in the process of arranging music and working out all
the "starting a group" administration stuff.

So, if you love to sing...you aren't currently spoken for...and you
would like to be...give us a shout, and we will send you more
information about us.
