Hey. My name is Pat and you may remember my first request sent back
in August. I have communicated with several groups since, but nothing
has worked out. I am a 1st Tenor (choral, not barbershop) with an
excellent ear, better than average sight-reader, and quick memorizer.
I am most interested in joining an existing a cappella group that has
the following characteristics:
      * small (4 to 12, I've done the chorus thing long enough)
      * mixed voices (female and male)
      * diverse repertoire (anything, as long as there is variety)
      * performs frequently (more than 3-4 shows per year)

Also, if you're not currently with a group, but are looking to start
something new, I would be interested in hearing from you. I've been
involved in numerous "start-up" organizations (although not a singing
group) and would be willing to volunteer that talent, as well.

Please feel free to copy this to anyone you think might be interested.

Thanks,

Hello everyone!

Some time ago, we sent an add very similar to this one titled -  “In Search for the Perfect Tenor.”  Well, we found him, but unfortunately just in time for one of our females to move from away from the Denver/Boulder area.  So, now we are re-sending our request and targeting the “Perfect Alto”…

About the Group:  Our niche is definitely ‘contemporary a Cappella’ – but perhaps better described as “cutting edge”.  Our music set will be extremely diverse: rock/pop (70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today), choral, funk, vocal jazz, ethnic, disco/dance/techno, gospel, and so on.  Really – there’s nothing we won’t try.  At the core of our group is the commitment to pushing the boundaries of modern a Cappella music.

Yet, we are serious musicians and no matter how unique the song, we will not sacrifice perfection and subtle musicality.  We’ll tackle complex chords, arrangements and percussion in a professional manner.  As a “vocal band” in the truest sense, we will bring our shared passion for challenging arrangements to a variety of venues previously untapped.  Studio recording will also be an ongoing component of our time together.  And in lieu of our hard work, we will make sure never to loose sight of the most important reason for doing this in the first place – fun.

This (so-far unnamed) group will be six-voice; currently, we have a tight group of five: Sop, T1, T2, Bass/Bari, and a true Bass2.  Most of us arrange, and can perform vocal percussion.  We have extremely different musical backgrounds, but all share a common love for a Cappella music.  Our ages range from mid-20’s to mid-30’s.

About the Alto:  We are looking for an Alto to fill out our sound, and allow us to tackle more complicated arrangements.  Although we are looking for a rich ‘alto tone’, she should be tonally flexible and capable of a variety of solos.  More importantly, however, she must have a knack for blending within difficult arrangements.  Arranging skills would be a definite bonus, as we like to distribute these among all the members.  But above all, the person must be friendly, enthusiastic, have good integrity, and be willing to actively participate within his new musical project.

Think it’s you, or someone you know?  We’re going to have an absolute blast, and make some incredible music together!  Please give me a call (or drop me a line) and I’ll be happy to discuss more about what we’re up to, the commitment, and the audition process.

Thanks,

Joseph DiMasi

Hi Pat,

I loved "Take Heart"!  I was asking relative of one of the members in the group where they are performing.  Sadly she informed me they have disbanded.  Some of the members moved out of state.  Sorry for the bad news.

Rob,

I arranged it several years ago for TTBB and would be happy to transcribe it
for SATB if you like. The lyrics have been updated to their current version
(they've changed them twice since 1968).

It 's fairly traditional with a semi-jazz feel.

Hello a cappella groups and fans,

This is an important announcement -- and it has the potential of bringing Colorado A Cappella into focus for a lot of the Contemporary A Cappella groups out there. Please read all of the following:

The owner of the dinner and music club on Pearl Street in Boulder (where we had parties recently for the Workshop and SoVoSo) has become very enthusiastic about bringing some of our groups into his restaurant as an attempt to vary his 7-day-a-week music operation. His hesitation has been mainly due to his clientele which comes primarily for the excellent food and wants quieter music that won't compete with table conversations.

So, after some thought, Michael Daigle, the owner of EnVie, has come up with a new plan that would reserve Monday nights for shows and entertainment items and limit restaurant offerings to snacks and bar. He thinks it would be great to have two a cappella evenings each month, with other events and parties in between. And he asked CVJS to help get the idea started and see how it works.

The program details are already pretty well codified, and I've listed the highlights below. Who knows if it will work, but to get Colorado (or Metro Denver) anywhere close to some of the hotspots across the country, there needs to be an accessible and publishable program to refer folks too. That's what has worked in other areas and that's what this project attempts to accomplish.

Here are the specifics at this point:

1) First evening: Monday, January 14; then twice a month (1/28, 2/11 & 25, 3/11 & 25, etc.) until April and reassess.

2) Hours: Monday evening schedule will be 8pm to 11pm, with 45-50 minute "shows" at 8:30pm and 10pm.

3) Genre: Contemporary A Cappella, but inclusive of vocal jazz (even accompanied), quality barbershop and gospel. CAC is obviously very inclusive (jazz, doo-wop, folky, etc.), but these other offerings would also be fine.

4) Group application: From any source (including community, school, college, pros), but especially from the 150+ persons on the message board. We expect to get adequate responses from good groups to at least carry the first quarter. With newspaper promotion, Harmony Sweeps tie-ins and general word-of-mouth, we should be able to provide an adequate schedule beyond that also -- if it works.

5) Fees: Ah, the toughie. To start, Michael is offering $100 and is considering an arrangement like adding $1/head for everyone who comes through the door throughout the evening. Any feedback you have on this will be appreciated.

6) Besides the customary publicity, each group would have small flyers handed out at their EnVie performances, listing bio and contact info. Those who have already appeared would have copies of their flyers available in the club. The schedule and group information will also be listed at <www.cvjs.org> and links to your websites can be inserted.

Does that sound interesting to any of you groups out there? If so, put some of your questions up on the board so we can all benefit from the discussion. I'll try to come up with answers.

If any of you are ready to apply for a date, please send me your request at
<rjsharette@...> and I'll reserve a night for you until we can specify your interest and availability.

Obviously, many of you will have concerns about the length of the shows and your ability to perform that much music. Here's a couple of answers: we anticipate that the second show, like in a club, may be pretty much a repeat of the first show; it's also possible for a group to have a splinter group or a guest group perform as part of their programs; even a soloist could be inserted as long as it maintains the style and focus of the group.

EnVie has a very nicely lit stage and a grand piano, but it's probably not large enough for a group of over 16-18. The house sound system is very good, but each group will have to provide its own mixer board, monitors and mics. In that regard, CVJS and the Wizards may be able to help in this area. We'll let you know as things come together. Seating capacity is about 100, and they're all good seats.

For the present, all applicants will be funneled through me until more permanent arrangements seem possible. Michael doesn't want the job of choosing groups, but will be happy to sign agreements with them and finalize fees (I don't want to get in the middle of that). BTW, neither I nor CVJS will profit financially from this.

We certainly would like to see this work and, of course, Other cities have tried it and it has generally come together very well. We realize it's not much money, but we have to start somewhere.

Unfortunately, I will be out of the country for the next week, which gives you time to think it over and contact your group members. I'll respond as quickly as possible when I return. Thanks for giving this your consideration. We can all do a lot for Colorado A Cappella through a program like this.

Hello A Cappella enthusiasts,

You should be a recipient of the "Colorado Songster" quarterly newsletter and probably affiliated with the Colorado Vocal Jazz Society and/or CASA Colorado. If you don't receive the newsletter and would like to, please send your snail mail address and telephone to this email address: <rjsharette@...>.

The purpose of this message is to encourage you to provide information about your activities, or those of a group with which you are affiliated, for: (1) the Winter Colorado Songster (from CVJS), or (2) the Contemporary A Cappella Society International Newsletter (CAN).

Basically, first priority information is for the calendars in these publications and their websites, with information for short articles also welcome. We would greatly appreciate your participation.

These newsletters publish at different dates, so right now we are looking at information for January through April which you would like to see published. The rule of thumb is that most of the performing information or performances be devoted to vocal jazz or contemporary a cappella (CAC) with some consideration given to other formats such as accompanied Vocal Groups, Barbershop, Gospel, etc. The next deadline for CAN input is January 1 and for the Colorado Songster, December 20. You can send digital information (including photos) to me at this address or, in hard copy, to CVJS, PO Box 481232, Denver 80248-1232 (please let me know by email if you have snail mailed information).

Meanwhile, here is the format in which we would like to get your Performance input:

Date(s) (assume within next 4-5 months)
Name of Group or Sponsoring Organization and Name of Event
Venue (e.g. auditorium) and brief address
City (in CO or nearby), Fee (if known) and Phone number for tickets (if applicable)

The Colorado Songster also publishes a "Classified Column" and welcomes listings from any side of the equation: groups looking for members, singers looking for groups or organizations looking for performance groups or individuals. Please provide such information in the following format:

Category of need: as above
Group or Individual name and Location
Short description of need
Contact phone and/or Email address.

If your group has any news to announce -- new albums, new members, awards, media appearances or other tidbits -- please send information (and photos?) along also. These may be published in the Colorado Songster or in CAN.

Don't put it off! NOW is your chance to get this free publicity. Thanks for your help in encouraging support for contemporary a cappella music in our state.

Happy New Year Colorado A Cappellists (Acappellans?, Acappellers?)!

We're off to a great start this year with lots of a cappella things happening (check the calendar listing in your copy of the Winter Colorado Songster, in the mail this week), but none more gratifying than the new try-it-out a cappella series in Boulder at the EnVie Music Cafe. Here's a schedule of the first line-up. We have 3-4 groups already interested in a spring series if this works out well. Why don't you make it a point to stop by and catch one or more of these programs? In fact, those of you in other parts of the state may want to work out a similar arrangement at a likely bistro in your neighborhood. See below:

The A CAPPELLA ENVIE Schedule!
Some of Colorado's most popular vocal bands are invading Boulder this winter. Many of these groups perform mainly for private parties and are not generally available to the public. But Pearl Street's A Cappella EnVie, at the EnVie Music Café (Pearl Street at 18th) with competitive prices and no cover, excellent sight lines and acoustics, should prove a unique opportunity to sample what's out there. Shows are every other Monday at 8:30 and 10pm. Here are dates!

January 14:  STORM FRONT!
Powerhouse barbershop by an award-winning quartet that will knock your Birkenstocks off. You haven't heard singing like this since "Music Man." Expect to be happy all night. Don't be late!

January 28: DENVER A CAPPELLA PROJECT!
Relationships among DAP members read like characters in the "Royal Tenenbaums", but their eclectic blend of harmony and skill will leave you wondering how they do it. This is a class act. Come and see for yourself!

February 11: LODO AIR BAND!
One of the best known vocal bands around and consistent award-winner in the Denver Regional Harmony Sweepstakes. They always leave you wanting more. You'll want to hunker down for two shows.

February 25: EXTREME MEASURES!
Boulder's own college mixed ensemble that has won several competitions and remains the cream of contemporary a cappella among the younger groups on many campuses. They are so good. Don't miss them!

March 11: NEW WIZARD OIL COMBINATION!
This 30-year old 16 voice men's vocal jazz-and-other group has been there--done that for longer than most groups can count, and still wows their fans. Be there!

March 25: DeCANTORS!
Is this really Boulder's oldest doo-wop group? Formed in 1988, they competed in the first Denver Harmony Sweeps, at which they came in last. The next year they rehearsed and did much better. Elvis has been sighted with them. Not to be missed!

Is your group interested in grabbing a date at EnVie April -June? Let us know so we can put it together.

Want to try this in the Springs? or Fort Collins? Surely be big stuff in Greeley! How about South Denver or Durango or Grand Junction? If you need to know details of how it's set up in Boulder and how it's working in other parts of the country, drop me an email and I'll try to help.

Meanwhile, come to EnVie and see!

After this it will get the name of the machine. This is because the worm wants to send mails with a subject line that has the name of the computer. The actual attachment in the mail is an EXE file, the worm itself with the name of the machine such as mypc.exe. Our new 8 member acapella group is looking into getting an LLC formed
and we have access to some sample documents on the internet for the
articles of organization & the operating agreement. However, we
wondered if anyone here in Colorado would be willing to share samples
of your documents since our organization will be unique to a small
music group. We don't mind paying a fee for this info.

Thanks,

Here's your chance to attend an opening night! Monday, January 14, STORM FRONT
will break in the new a cappella stage at EnVie Music Cafe on Pearl Street at
18th in Boulder. This powerhouse Barbershop and beyond award-winning quartet
will knock your Birkenstocks off. Expect to be happy all evening. There will be
two shows at 8:30pm and 10pm.

STORM FRONT blends energy, experience and skill, bringing to their shows an
eclectic selection of songs spanning many differing styles and generations.
Always ready to sing, the guys found themselves performing at Nashville's "SING"
last summer. Then they came back to Denver to win a silver medal in the SPEBSQSA
Rocky Mountail District contest in the fall.

Skilled in a number of styles, Storm Front's passion for good music provides a
little something for everyone. And EnVie's comfortable environment assures you
of an entertaining evening. There's no cover or minimum; just well-stocked bar,
light food and wonderful desserts. Come and see for yourself!

The City of Northglenn is looking for a barbershop group to perform at one of our evening summer concerts this year.  Specifically, we are looking for a group to perform twenties/thirties music for a family-based audience, approximately 90 minutes worth.  Please email if you know of, or are a group that would be interested.

Thanks,

Hello Colorado singers,

By now some of you have heard that EnVie effectively went out of business after last Monday evening's stellar show. I learned of their problem the previous day when I returned from Arizona and spoke with owner Michael Daigle. He was very forthcoming and asked that we go ahead with January 14 as a "great way to close the house." And it was.

I hold no grudge against EnVie or the owner. Mike was served with an eviction notice on January 11 to be effective on the third day. He could have closed down Sunday night, but chose to hang in until Monday so we could have our show. He had been frank in saying for weeks that they were on tenterhooks and had taken several actions to increase efficiency and cut costs -- all to no avail. He had said he wasn't sure how long they could stay open, which is one reason we did not schedule shows after March (March came a little early this year). <g>

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this will have caused the five great groups who will not get to perform at EnVie. All that have sung there have agreed the venue was almost perfect for our kind of thing. Michael will survive; he retains a legal position he has held with Quizno's Corporate Headquarters and will undoubtedly pursue his dream in another place at another time.

What will happen to our (your) A Cappella series?
Well, I have worked all week to try to find a solution for our series venue, but it's not coming together. Places that will hire or provide space for bands simply aren't interested in a cappella. It's really a shame. They don't know what they're missing. We had more than 100 at EnVie for the two January 14 shows and they were both very well received. Quite frustrating after all the work to get it set up. We tried very hard to make it still happen at Boulder's Trilogy, but they just couldn't get excited about it. I already had new flyers designed: "A CAPPELLOGY" <g> Oh well, maybe next time!

CVJS wants to formally apologize for not being able to follow through with this project. We think it would have been one of the most exciting a cappella events in the area ever! We would still like to see a similar activity happen in the future -- in Boulder or elsewhere. There are a couple of places in the Metro area that provide a cappella evenings, but they're few and far between and usually bring in the same groups every month or so. Nothing wrong with that (good for them!), but there's such a wealth of groups that should be heard, it's disappointing not to see a variety series somewhere.

Once more, thanks to a remarkably versatile and dynamic group for making our opening such a musical and popular success and possibly giving us a finale that couldn't have been more exciting. Three cheers (hell, 50) to STORM FRONT: Dave Ellis, Jim Clark, Syd Lisback and Darin Drown, for giving the January 14 crowd a super taste of what "neo-Barbershop" (<g>) can be.

We will be concentrating now on our March 5 King'singers pre-show, concert and afterglow, originally also scheduled for EnVie, but we'll be able to find a venue for that, I'm sure. Meanwhile, we're already seeing a good number of ticket orders and reservations, so get on the list for some of our great discount packages before it's too late. The university only has limited space for this event and will only provide us 50 tickets of which a third are already committed. It WILL be sold out.

Keep the faith. A Cappella will overcome!

Sing! Sing! Sing!

Denver's Last Note Singers, who've delighted audiences with their a capella singing for over 20 years, is adding singers! All voice ranges, male and female, will be considered for this adult group singing standards and show tunes. We'd welcome sociable singers with some previous group singing experience, and prefer sight reading and memory singing skills.

Rehearsals for our Summer season begin on Tuesday, February 5 from 7:00 - 9:30 pm. Join us for a try-out group rehearsal (no solo audition) at the Washington Park United Church of Christ, at Dakota and Williams - 400 S. Williams (back door, lower level).

We will practice every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30 pm through May and sing approximately twelve concerts throughout June and July. Our Holiday season begins in September for concerts in December. Contact Alden Whittaker at 303-282-1043 for more information.

Aren't those kids great? I've been waiting to find out if they are doing the Harmony Sweeps again this year.

Good luck.
