I paid 700.00 for the Puchner contra bocal but it is well worth it

work exceptionally on any other horn I've played, including my Puchner.
I think the Puchner instruments are often underrated in general, and
the same goes for the crooks. I've often seen them sold for $200 or
less, which for a good one is a steal compared to a decent Heckel crook.

At the risk of raising a controversy, I am forced to reply:
For me as a dilettante musician and composer, Facebook is my lifeline to
the musical world. Very well-known composers and performers -- whom I
have never met -- have become my friends on Facebook. They post
fascinating information on an almost hourly basis. I literally do not
have time to keep up with them. Facebook is a great way for people who
share common interests to meet and communicate. Its virtues far outweigh
its flaws.

Being a strong advocate of Puchner's I will agree. For a year or so I've been a
happy owner of a model 23 I think. It has a nice big sound and very much reminds
me of a Heckel. big fan of em :P
I've been monstrously curious about the Bell Bassoons. Definitely going for one
of those when I'm done with the Puchner which won't be for a long time I'm sure.

It's funny how a little piece of metal can have such an effect. I had

I tried to use the facebook 'find friends' feature. I loaded my
addresses from my mail program and checked off a few as a test. I hit
submit a couple of times and it said I had requested over 300 friends
instead of the expected 6. I have decided that I don't want to deal
with that. I have canceled my facebook account. I will probably never
use Facebook again.

Thanks,
I have a very nice Fox but tried a Puchner bocal on it and it plays
beautifully. That got me wondering how their contras play.

An other good instrument I had tried belonged to a student-colleague at
San Francisco Conservatory of Music. It was probably made around the same
time as the UofT's instrument.
Also, about Five years ago, I tried a new instrument at the Frankfurt's
Musik Masse (it was one of the antique finish models); some how that
particular instrument did not strike me as a good one: it had some projection
problems in the high register and some notes had a questionable intonation. I
also noticed that mechanically it was time for the Factory to redesign it.
If you're thinking about buying a new one, it might be wiser to get a new
Fox: they're great instruments and you're getting much more for the money
today; with the Dollar standing at it's lowest ever against Euro, you might
be shocked how much it might cost you to (Heckel, besides the money, is
also about Seven years of waiting, at the moment(!)).

I'm pretty sure that Ithaca college uses one. You could write to Leah Goodhue
and inquire.

Indiana University has a newer contra (2002 or so) which I played on
many, many concerts while a student there. It played very well, and
had a great big, yet controllable sound. I used it in many
situations, from Mahler to crazy new music works with super high
passages. Loved it. I wish I had one myself now!
Also, it had the antique finish, which not only looks great, but seems
to help the sound as well.
Cheers,
Justin

I played a Püchner contra at the Frankfurt Musikmesse last April. It was being
sent to China after the Exhibit. Fabulous instrument.

John,
Clarinet stuff is over on Mark Charette's www.woodwind.org
site. (Wait! That's LinkedIn, not Facebook...<grin>)
When you wrote that, my 8 year-old had "Doctor Who" on
Dvd with the very large-type clarinet solos. Done very
tastefully, always leaving us wanting more...
Good Luck in your search.

I played Puchner contras at the Norwegian State Academy and Oslo Philharmonic.
Both great instruments
with good intonation and beautiful sound. Missed them a lot until I got the Fast
Fox!!

Howdy,
The List Marm gives this one little "Cool!" overall, and one little
Uncool for sending a robotic friends invitation to the
entire group.
There are actually easier way to hyperlink to your site.
You'd also be expected to follow through.
Be careful what you wish for!
