Here's how I've done the 5th string on some of my banjos. I am thinking about going with a bone nut, instead of the screw nut to make tuning a little

I use a .008 guitar string for my long 5th on my 5-string. I tune it to hi-g. I don't have a short string. That's a 26 1/2" scale. You could also put a spike

There is an instrument that I recall also being called a dulcijo.  It has a short 3rd string and regular length 1 and 2.  Played like a banjo with the bum

I think the dulcijo playing is done in a strumming style, using a flat pick or strum with your thumb or finder nails. A 5-string has a high g 5th string
