Subject: JEFF BECK To Receive 'Living Legend' Award At U.K.'s 'Classic Rock Roll Of Honour' - Sep. 12, 2011
rocknrollcola
Send Email Send Email

Jeff Beck will follow in the footsteps of such greats as Jimmy Page, Lemmy,
AliceCooper, Iggy Pop and Ozzy Osbourne as the recipient of the coveted "Living
Legend" award at this year's ClassicRock Roll Of Honour

Says Beck: "The Classic Rock Roll Of Honour has always been about great music
that inspires and excites others. To
be named as a 'Living Legend' amongst so many fantastic musicians is an
honor.

"When I was a 6-year-old boy, I heard Les Paul's 'How High The Moon' over the
radio and from that moment on I knew that I wanted to play the guitar and make
music. That moment has led me to where I am today.

"Rock
music continues to evolve and it's great how established acts inspire
the upcoming bands and vice versa, producing more and more great music.

"I am proud to be a small part of this."

KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons will host the event at The Roundhouse in
London on Wednesday, November 9.

Comments Gene: "On that momentous occasion, the planets will align, living
legends
will gather to honor their own and London will become the center of the
rock and roll universe.

"It's one thing being a voracious and loyal reader of Classic Rock, but it's
another to be in the same room as the people who have inspired me to stop
flipping burgers and jump up on stage and have a go at it
myself."

Subject: British MP Lobbying For Knighthood For JIMMY PAGE - Nov. 15, 2011

According to DailyMail.co.uk, British Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP) Louise Mensch revealed that she is lobbying for a knighthood for former LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page, who is one of her husband's former clients.

Louise is married to Peter Mensch — a co-owner of Q Prime, a talent management company that handles the careers of such artists as METALLICA, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SHANIA TWAIN and JOSH GROBAN.

Louise Mensch wrote of her campaign to turn Page into Sir Jimmy on Twitter. "I've proposed Jimmy Page. Waiting to see if that finds favour with Honours Directorate. I hope so," she said. However, she denied that her husband's past role as his manager had any influence, saying, "Clearly there is nobody more worthy of a knighthood and I am glad to say I have gathered support from every major record label in the U.K."

Top 10 Recordings of 2011 in no particular order: 1) The Cars, "Move Like This" (the UNCUT reviewer nailed it: "a miracle"); 2) Johnny Winter, "Roots" - one of his best; 3) Blondie, "Panic of Girls"; 4) Gregg Allman, "Low Country Blues"; 5) Lindsay Buckingham, "Seeds We Sow"; 6) REM, "Collapse Into Now"; 7) Alison Kraus, "Paper Airplane" (if you were Robert Plant, would you rather hang around with Jimmy Page or Alison Kraus?); 8) Levon Helm, "Ramble At The Ryman" - captures the spirit of The Band; 9) Duran Duran, "All You Need Is Now"; 10) Stickmen, "Absalom" - Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto capture the Crimson spirit

Best Archival releases: 1) Neil Young, "A Treasure"; 2) Rolling Stones, "Some Girls"; 3) Beach Boys, "Smile"; 4) King Crimson, "Starless and Bible Black"; 5) Yardbirds, "Glimpses"

Best concert: A toss up for me: It was either watching Robert Plant upstage the Allman Brothers Band at the Wanee Festival, or watching Adrian Belew and Tony Levin and their bands cover some great King Crimson material in Atlanta. I also caught a great Jeff Beck show in Jacksonville (got to meet the old Yardbird too) and saw JD Fortune's last show with INXS in Atlanta.

Happy Holidays!!!

Here's my review of Glimpses for Hittin The Note magazine:
The Yardbirds launched the careers of three of rock’s greatest guitarists, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Glimpses 1963-1968 is a long-awaited 5 disk set of rarities and classics, as well as radio interviews telling the story of the Yardbirds in their own words.
The early Yardbirds – lead guitarist Clapton, singer Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarty, rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja, and bassist Paul Samwell Smith – were regulars at London’s Craw-Daddy Club, where they performed blues standards like Howling Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning,” and “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.” In August 9, 1964 recording from a Richmond, England blues festival (with singer Mick O’Neill filling in for the sick Relf) shows the Yardbirds covering Chuck Berry’s “Carol” and “Little Queenie.”
McCarty noted the Yardbirds were lucky that Clapton, Beck and Page were all brought up in the same area of South London. Dreja noted that before the advent of album rock, bands “were only as good as their last single,” but Clapton quit after the recording of the single “For Your Love,” preferring “a tough blues band” to the band’s pursuit of chart success. Jeff Beck brought his “futuristic” (McCarty) fuzz box sounds to “Heart Full of Soul” and the whirling psychedelia of “Over Under Sideways Down.” When Smith quit, Chris Dreja ultimately moved to bass and Jimmy Page became the band’s second guitarist. The band’s final BBC performances after Beck quit include “Dazed and Confused” and Page’s acoustic “White Summer,” both of which became standards in the setlist of Page’s next band, Led Zeppelin (f/k/a “The New Yardbirds”)
Glimpses offers surprises including Beck singing a scorching version of “Dust My Broom” (recently covered by Johnny Winter on Roots), Relf and Beck interviewing Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, live versions of the McCoys’ “Hang On Sloopy” and Bob Dylan’s “Most Likely You’ll Go Your Way and I Go Mine.”  Glimpses provides a comprehensive portrait of one of rock’s great bands.

Subject: Jeff Beck On His Rolling Stones Audition: Keith And I Would Have Punched Each Other Out
rocknrollcola
Send Email Send Email

Shortly after being named a ‘Living Legend’ by Classic Rock Magazine, Jeff Beck spent some time looking back at his storied career, including an ill-fated 1975 audition for the Rolling Stones.
The Stones were looking to fill the guitarist slot that had recently been vacated by Mick Taylor. Beck stopped by thinking that he was merely going to help them out with a couple of tracks for their next record. The fact that he might be auditioning for the group never crossed his mind.
As he relates in the story, he had been in the studio for two days without seeing any of the Stones. Looking around the area, he saw a stack of guitars and thought “odd…how many guitars does Keith need?”
Pianist Ian Stewart told Beck “they’re giving you an audition. They’ve told all the other guys to f-ck off.”
“Eventually, we got into the same room together and I started playing Bill Wyman’s bass so hard the dust was flying off. I wandered off and the engineer, Glyn Johns, said ‘that’s incredible!’ I said: ‘One for the archives, mate. I’m leaving tomorrow.’”
The group wasn’t happy with Beck’s decision to leave, but he describes the recording situation back then as “dysfunctional” and says that he couldn’t deal with the “lack of purpose.”
From their side, the Stones defended their methods as the way they worked as a unit, but Beck wanted no part of that, saying that “I’m not into chaos.”
“Some people might find it hard to believe that you’d walk away from the Stones gig, but Keith and I wouldn’t have gone through an album without punching each other out anyway.”
In the end, Beck was happy with his decision, because he was slated to work with Beatles producer George Martin on the album that would become Beck’s ‘Blow by Blow.’
Having recently revealed a new band lineup, Beck is excited about his forthcoming album, which he says will be “a real band album.”

Dear Yardbirds Fan,
Seems that The Yardbirds are busier than ever. They have just wrapped up the Brass Monkey Tour with The Vanilla Fudge and now have April dates set in Canada and a couple in the midwest. Check the 'gigs' page at www.yardbirds.us for details.
If you missed Jim McCarty and Ben King on Rockline last week you can still hear the show at www.rocklineradio.com for another week or so. Check out tracks from the new DVD!
We did sell out of our supply of the 'Glimpses' box set. (5 CDs & promotional 45) on the tour but it is still available via the website. A "must have" for any Yardbirds collector.

A limited-edition print of LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page, photographed in 2009 by Ross Halfin, has become the 100,000th portrait to be archived at the prestigious National Portrait Gallery in London. The photograph forms part of a limited edition portfolio of five fine art prints signed by Jimmy Page and each respective photographer: Jorgen Angel in Copenhagen 1970, Dick Barnatt at Earls Court Arena 1975, Neal Preston at Chicago Stadium 1977 and Baron Wolman at Oakland Coliseum, California 1977. All five fine art prints have recently been added to the National Portrait Gallery's collection.

The National Portrait Gallery began digitizing its collection in 1996 in order to make its portraits available online, with Jimmy Page's portrait achieving the 100,000 milestone earlier this month.
