It was 30 years ago today that Robert Smith taught them how to play.
22 April 1977 The Cure took to the stage for the first time as The
EASYCURE. Four boys from Crawley were charging 30p per ticket to the
audience of the infamous rocker pub, The Rocket. Little did they know
that 30 years later they would have 14 studio albums behind them and
a string of greatest hits compilations and best selling DVDs, Britts
awards, Grammy nominations and film soundtracks.
The Cure, have become one of Britain's biggest exports, whilst not so
well known in the UK they have achieved cult status in Europe and the
UK.
To celebrate 30 years of the music of The Cure, The Railway Inn in
Crawley (formerly The Rocket) once more for one day only will become
The Rocket.
On the 22nd of April 2007 (30 years to the day) The Railway Inn will
rock to the sounds of The Cure. This all day event will include a
Cure video wall, a charity Cure memorabilia raffle, performances by
live bands including The Cureheads (the original tribute to the cure)
all twisted together by DJ's spinning rare Cure grooves, remixes and
Cure related tunes. Entrance is 30p but there will be a charity
collection to be given to a local charity. The PA system is being
paid for by the Railway Inn.
from 'Ten Imaginary Years':
On 6 May, Easy Cure played their first proper gig at The Rocket, a
local Crawley pub.
Robert: "It was Sunday lunchtime and we realised Amulet were supposed
to be playing that night and that they couldn't make it for some
reason so we just phoned the pub and asked if we could play instead.
We realised we needed to play in front of a real audience at some
point so we rehearsed all afternoon and went and played. We went down
quite well and they asked us back and, within two or three months, we
were pulling about 300 people because there was no-one in Crawley
who'd ever done anything like what we were doing. We had a really
drunken following, and we were really just a focal point, an excuse
for people to go out, get really drunk and smash the place up!"
"Whenever we played, we all thought it was awful - there was loads of
feedback and you could never hear anything except Porl's guitar.
That's the only reason we kept getting rebooked, because he became
the local guitar hero!"
Members who played the original show -Peter O'Toole, Robert Smith,
Michael Dempsey, Laurence Tolhurst, Porl Thompson
(the Band was called "Easy Cure")

...it's become a bit of a running joke over the years that the next
gig will be our last. It comes about as a result of having seen the
cure themselves play their "last ever show" on more than fourteen
occasions over the years.....
Check this site out for live cureheads photos...nice revamp btw seb :)
