1) Interesting fact by Arty
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu (85 letters long) is the world's second-longest place name. This Maori name of a hill in New Zealand translates as "The Place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed, and swallowed mountains, known as a land-eater, played on the flute to his loved one."
2) Uninteresting fact by Arty (deemed uninteresting at Arty's discretion)
In olden days, barbers also performed as surgeons. Blood-letting, a remedy of the time believed to cure diseases, was one of their main tasks. The red-and-white striped barber pole originally symbolized a bleeding arm swathed in bandages.
3) UG News
Well, UG, when they seemed on the verge of demise... got better. That's right. UG has a new frontman! Wanna know who it is? Hmmm... how about a clue and you can find out for yourself... this individual was formerly the frontman of UG when the band first crashed into the scene with the release of the 5-song EP, GrooveKrank.
Rumours that the band couldn't find the right frontman despite a nation-wide manhunt and direct contact with Ed McMahon regarding former star-search winners are true. There was much emailing and phoning and looking under coffee tables. Nada. Then, as suddenly as a flash of sunlight (not counting the light years of travel involved in said flash arriving on earth), a former member, a UG alumnus took the spot.
Is he any good? The folks milling about the SEED Tower are impressed. Let's say this: You can expect a definite shift in the vocal dept. It's a shift however that only stands to make the band better, if you can imagine it! Booking has begun for the fall/winter tour, tentatively labelled the "Answers Breed Questions Tour". Some dates may feature UG's labelmates, Crooked Dirt (www.crookeddirt.com)
This tour should book up fairly quickly, as interest in the band has remained strong during the lengthy hiatus. Expect announcement of some of those dates on Sept. 1/01... which brings me to the next news item.
The new UG Website: The old site will be entirely offline as of the end of this week. However, the old and soon to be updated mp3.com site will remain for now. http://www.mp3.com/unevenground
For the faintest hint of the new website, visit http://come.to/unevenground. A lovely placeholder page has been designed. It's great! "You can talk to it."
The new site launches officially Sept. 1/01 and will be more frequently updated. Also, based on demand, there will be more concert pic's and individual bio's @ the new site.
4) Upcoming Shows
As mentioned in the news section, several shows will be announced on Sept. 1 on the website. There is one we'd like to make you aware of, however: On October 14th Uneven Ground will be performing at the Toronto marathon. The band has been given musical leeway and will likely snap the restraints. Expect at least one lounge cover. To suggest that cover, email: ugcovers@.... The finer details of this gig will be available soon.
For booking info. email ugbooking@... and be sure to state the date in question and any questions you have.
5) A Message from the Band
This week: The new frontman, Mr. X, announces his arrival personally.
"Hey. Arty just asked me to say a few words about the band and such. I'm excited about the way things are shaping up...we're looking forward to our upcoming shows, and we're eager to book as many as we reasonably can (reasonability NOT being the primary qualification). It's a little scary to be filling in the vocal-shoes of a performer as intense as Nathan Hutton, but I'm curiously anticipating what might happen the first time we all step out on stage together. I'd encourage you to be there to witness it for yourself, since the UG stage-show track record indicates that you may not believe the reports if you're not there to see it with your own eyes. And that's only partial hyperbole. So I hope to see you soonly. Enjoy your day."
There you go, JJ&P
See ya'
