David and Ella have a bunch of gigs this June, listed below. We're also excited about the visit this month of the Älvdalens Spelmanslag from Sweden. Besides playing at the Nisswa-Stämman and various parties and concerts, they will be recording a couple of polskas with Boiled in Lead for BiL's next album.
On Saturday March 17 David will be performing with Boiled in Lead at First Avenue for St. Patrick's Day. If you would like comp tickets, let us know. See the Boiled in Lead interview in March issue of Mpls St. Paul Magazine.
First of all, we returned on January 18 from 4 sun-filled weeks in Malaysia, and you can take a look at some of our pictures here. We had a great, relaxing time.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Petaling Jaya, Malaysia!
We are about half-way through a 1 month stay in Malaysia. So far we have celebrated Christmas here at Anne's mother's house, seen several old friends and family members, spent 2 days on the Island of Penang, and spent my birthday exploring Melaka.
On Sunday, September 10, David has two performances. From 9:30 a.m to 12:15 p.m. you can catch him with the West African band SunPlug'd ,featuring Tarloh Quiwonkpa and Wanaku at Black Bear Crossings at 1360 Lexington Parkway in St Paul, and then at 7:30 p.m. he performs with Sakher Hattar and Crossing Borders at the Cedar Cultural Center in a program of classical Arabic music. Sakher Hattar will also be on KFAI's Century Song Sunday, September 3, at 9 a.m. at 90.3 FM, and on the the Current's Morning Show at 89.3 FM on Friday, September 8. Both shows are archived on the web, and can be heard after the fact.
Greetings, Friends!
You may know that Ella and I have been going to the American Swedish Institute
on
Thursdays to learn Swedish fiddle tunes. This Thursday, however, there is a
special concert
we'll be going to. Bengt Jonsson and Örjan Hans-Ers, leaders of Hälsingland's
Bollnäs
Spelmanslag will be giving a concert Thursday, April 20, 7:30 pm at Good
Templar, 2922
Cedar Ave S, Minneapolis. The concert will be followed by an allspel (lots of
fiddlers) and
dance.

David Stenshoel
Friends,
Boiled in Lead played last night at First Avenue, and had a great time. Mark
Stillman and
Savage Aural Hotbed (check the links section in the box on the left) opened.
There was some
video taken and I'm eager to see that. SAH also accompanied us on a couple of
numbers: a
set of slipjigs and polkas, and a set of polskas. What fun! I hope we can do
more
collaberating with them.
Next week, I'll be playing with the Robb Henry trio ( guitar, bass, and violin)
at the Loring
Pasta Bar from 6 to 9:30. Very similar repertoire to Honeysuckle Rose: Django
Reinhardt/
Stephane Grapelli Hot Club tunes. A couple of years ago I played with Robb's
group Parisota
Hot Club when their violinist Raphael went home to Paris for the summer.
That's all for now,
David
I'll be playing with Boiled in Lead at First Avenue for the 24th annual St.
Patrick's Day show on
March 17, 2006. Doors open at 5 pm. Mark Stillman and Savage Aural Hotbed will
open, and
Boiled in Lead will be immediately preceded by the Minnesota Police Pipe Band.
On Friday, March 31, I will be playing with Felonious Bosch, opening for Reptile
Palace
Orchestra at the Cedar Cultural Center.

Hi Folks!

Cultural
Center gig.

Quinn's,
3300 E. Lake St. in Minneapolis. Molly Quinn's is an Irish pub and family
restaraunt
serving burgers, etc. Honeysuckle Rose is vocalist Rose Oyamot, guitarists Mike
Valentiner, and Dean Harrington, and myself on violin, doing Gypsy Jazz in the
tradition
of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.

Harrington

Hi Everyone!
I am saddenned to announce that the Marilyn Sellars concert scheduled for
tommorrow
at the Old Log Theater has been cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. I'll let
you know
if it is rescheduled for a later date. Other than that, I hope you've all been
keeping
busy, what with all of the events going on around here. I wasn't able to catch
Sethu at
the Walker Sculpture Garden, because I had a Margo show those nights, but Anne
got it
on video for me, and it looked great!
Later,
David
Yesterday's jam was small but fun. My brother Peter played keyboards, I played
violin
and dumbek, Stuart Mathews played electric bass, and Russ Rayfield played banjo.
Some
of the tunes I remember doing were Trotto, Soba Bomba, and Impressions. Also a
lot of
free and metered improvisation. We played from about 4:30 until 6:30 and then
went
over to Dunn Brothers for the Secondhand Rose / Honeysuckle Rose gig. It was the
first time we had fused the two trios to make a sextet, and it worked very
nicely.
On Saturday night, we had a dinner and meeting with the participants in a future
show
by Voices of Sepharad called Peace in the House, looking at commonalities and
neighborliness in the various cultures of the Middle East. More on that later.
Musically Yours,
David
Greetings!
Good news for Honeysuckle Rose fans. Michael Valentiner is recovering from his
carpal
tunnell surgery, and should be joining Rose, Dean, and I at Mapps this Friday,
June 4.
The Friday after that, they will have to do it without me, because I have a
Monkey
Chant rehearsal. More on that in a few paragraphs.
The showing of the silent film classic, "Grass" with live Turkish and Persian
music was a
big success. Anne and the other volunteers had to put up extra chairs as the
long lines
of eager film/music fans delayed the starting time. As he viewed the teeming
throngs,
Bill Kubeczko's wheels were spinning in his head with other possible film/music
teamings. Keep your eyes on the Cedar.
As I was listening to the news yesterday I was surprised and delighted to hear
the
sound of my violin accompanying the voice of local African music legend Yawo
Attivor in
a story about his music and his commitment to peaceful political revolution in
his native
Togo. You can read and hear the story at
http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2004/05/28_feidta_yawo/
You can hear the tune, Via de los Tesoros at: http://www.yawo.com/music.shtml
On Sunday, June 6, when we would normally be doing our Moon/Sun Gesture or
first-sunday-of-the-month-jam, we are postponing that a week because my daughter
Ella
is performing with the Youth Ensemble of the IPAAM Gamelan at Ella's Gamelan
concert
Sunday June 6 3pm at the Como Park Pavilion at 1360 Lexington Parkway N. in St.
Paul.
More info at http://www.ipaam.org/performances.html
Later that night, from 7-10 pm my group Honeysuckle Rose will be performing at
the
Dunn Brothers coffeehouse at Grand @ Snelling in St. Paul.
If you, like like I, have always had a secret desire to do the Balinese Monkey
Chant,
now's your chance (if you're male and over 15). Ragamala is looking for men to
perform
the Cecak in the Walker Sculpture garden next September 11 and 12 as part of
their
multicultural presentation inspired by the Ramayana. I attended the training
sessions in
May, and find it to be a stimulating and satisfying experience. It puts you into
the
middle of a syncopated chatter, and when everybody is in locking in correctly,
it's
exhilarating. There will be 3 pick-up rehearsals for newcomers:
Friday, June 11, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Sunday, June 27, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Wednesday, August 4, 7:00 - 9:00

raging rivers in Southern Iran. This incredible evening includes a
continuous
Turkish & Persian musical score.

musicians:

Hi!
Here are my gigs this April. This Friday, April 2, and subsequent
Fridays (except for
April 16) I'll be playing with Honeysuckle Rose from 6-9 pm at Mapps
Coffee & Tea,
1810 Riverside Ave. We will also be at North Country Coop on
Saturday, April 3 from
1-3 pm. Later that night, from 9:30 to 12:30 I'll be playing in a
Tribute to Django
Reinhardt at the Times Bar & Restaurant at 201 East Hennepin Ave. On
Saturday, April
17, I'll be with the Parisota Hot Club at the Loring Pasta Bar from
6-10 pm. Finally, on
Saturday April 24, Honeysuckle Rose will be at Black's Ford in
Wayzata from 6-9 pm.
Regards,
David
We had a fun jam at Mapps yesterday. Rik Svien brought his oud and guitar, Gary
Schulte played violin, and we started by reading some classical Arabic tunes.
John
Rosenow joined us on guitar and dumbek. When Matt Woodling came with his guitar,
we
switched to Beatles tunes and standards. David Barbour added percussion and
vocals,
and finally Steve Spaise joined with percussion. Some of the tunes I remember
doing are
Daphne, Yesterday, For All We Know, Boil Them Cabbage Down, Dream, Round
Midnight,
On the Sunny Side of the Street.
Earlier yesterday, I played Persian music with Maryam Yusefzadeh at Plymouth
Congregational Church. We hadn't worked as a duo before, but it worked nicely,
and the
people attending were very attentive and appreciative.
After that performance I played Malaysian music with Tim O'Keefe and Miriam
Gerberg
at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, for their Taste of Malaysia banquet. That also
went
well. I was happy to have finally had a chance to use some of the music I had
collected
when Anne, Ella and I went to Malaysia in 2002.
All in all, it was a long, but musical day.
Regards,
David
