My copy arrived in the mail on Wednesday, so I've had
a few days to listen and evaluate.

I have to admit that I thought this might turn out to
be mostly a vanity project--just do some of their
favourite songs, because they can. I'm glad to be
wrong about that; they didn't just copy the records,
they put their own spin on each song, though "And Your
Bird Can Sing" doesn't sound very different from the
Beatles' original (I'm not sure, though, how they
could have improved on the original arrangement).

I'm pleasantly surprised at some of the songs here,
especially the Neil Young tunes ("Cinnamon Girl" and
"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"): I never would
have pegged Sue as a Neil Young fan, he's so different
from what we associate with her and the Bangles. But
Sid and Susie do justice to both songs, and they leave
me admiring them again on their adventurousness in
selecting Love's "Alone Again Or," the Who's "The Kids
Are All Right," the Velvet Underground's "Sunday
Morning," and the Zombies' "Care of Cell #44." My
personal favourite is the Left Banke's "She May Call
You Up Tonight." I've always loved the original, and
Sid and Susie obviously do, too. They stay close to
it without copying it outright; it's very nicely done.

And the Stone Ponies' "A Different Drum"--"As a young
lass, Susie taught herself to sing by sweetly wailing
along to this gem," say the notes, and it shows in
Sue's delivery. She wears this song like a pair of
comfortable old slippers, every note lovingly sung,
just as she surely did all those years ago. You may
be tempted to put this one on Repeat.

All in all, 'Under The Covers' is a rousing success.
And guys, the photos show that Sue still has great
legs! On the last page of the booklet, it says, "See
you next time! xo S&S."

It can't come soon enough to suit me!
