Saturday 2/2 would have been the great songstress Eva
Cassidy's 45th birthday had she not left us in 1996, a
victim of cancer.
Eva's 'Imagine' CD is one of my favourites. I can't
help feeling that, over on the other side, Eva's
achingly poignant rendering of John Lennon's song
makes him smile.
And the whole album runs the gamut of styles, from
Billie Holiday's "You've Changed" to "Fever" to Buddy
Holly's "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" (actually written
by Paul Anka.) Oh: I almost forgot a great version
of Fairport Convention's "Who Knows Where the Time
Goes."
Everything by Eva Cassidy is superb, but 'Imagine'
really stands out for me. Katie Melua, who mentions
Eva as her greatest influence, wrote "Faraway Voice"
as a tribute to her. It's on her first CD, 'Call Off
the Search.'
It's a testament to Eva Cassidy's greatness as a
vocalist that 3 million copies of her CDs have been
sold since her death in 1996, and the 'Songbird' CD
went to #1 on the UK charts in 2001.
Jazz, blues, folk, pop, there was nothing that she
couldn't do, and she did it very well.
