New Cheap Trick Album Available On 8-Track

I’m telling you, kids, MP3s and Blu-ray might be today’s digital standards, but analog is making a comeback, which is inexplicable to some. Vinyl sales are soaring (check your local Best Buy soon to confirm), cassette-only releases are hot, and now one of the weirder formats (sorry Mini and Laser disc) is being used to drop a much-anticipated new album: 8-track.

The Globe and Mail reports (via Music Radar) that Cheap Trick are releasing their new album, The Latest, on CD, iTunes, vinyl, and 8-track cartridges. It’s hard to come by an 8-track player these days, but the band really chose to release the discontinued format as a kind of stunt. “If a bunch of these [classic rock radio] stations weren’t going to play it anyway, we’ll send them something that will be a nice conversation piece,” Cheap Trick’s manager, Dave Frey, said.

So if you’re a Cheap Trick fan with a 1975 Ford Pinto in the front yard, the album of the year drops for $30 later this month.
