Back in September 2006 we played at the Slough Canal Boat Festival where we met
Vicky on her canal boat. Vicky runs regular trips on the Grand Union Canal and
one of these on Sunday 8 November will feature entertainment from the New Essex
Bluegrass Band.
In Vicky's own words:
"Come and listen to one of the best bluegrass bands in the country while
cruising down the Grand Union Canal on one of the most amazing barges in the
country, Elsdale II.
"The New Essex Bluegrass Band perform traditional bluegrass at its best. Chill
out to their music while supporting the work of Elsdale, the West London
Floating Classroom. Tickets sales go toward the boat's educational outreach to
schools and community groups.
"Boat departs from Packet Boat Marina, Packet Boat Lane, Cowley nr Uxbridge UB8
2JJ. Booking is essential as places are limited. Tickets £10 pre-purchased,
£12 if bought on the day. Contact Vicky Tustian on 07545 924 868 or
victoria.tustian@...
" 'Elsdale II' is special as she is the only one of her kind on the canal. She
is one of the biggest boats you will see operating on the canal and completely
electrically powered, so no noisy engine or diesel fumes. She takes thousands of
children onto the canal every year to learn about their industrial heritage and
local wildlife. The name comes from the first floating classroom commissioned by
the Rev. Elsdale about 70 years ago to follow the working boats and provide an
education for the bargees' children who didn't have the opportunity to attend
school."
There is a well stocked bar on board and very good parking and picnic areas at
the marina.
Departure time 2.30pm - Return 6.00pm.
We hope you will join us.

Just a reminder the Didmarton Raffle is not closed and the draw will take
place at a date to be announced in December 2009. This will coincide with a
Bluegrass Experience in Bath or Bristol the planning of which will take
place shortly. We've got enough on our plate just now!
So if you want tickets or can sell some on our behalf, please contact us
a.s.a.p.
I now have the wonderful Santa Cruz D model and it's a peach. Will
certainly make someone happy! Do of course remember there are other prizes
including a great mic (Audio-technica AT4033) as used by all the bands who
perform around a single mic. It's also a great recording mic.
I must make special mention of our sponsors The Santa Cruz Guitar Co,
audio-technica and Dave Bresnen of Frets Old and New for providing a descent
leather strap for the guitar!
The third prize is a place at Sore Fingers Week 2010 (tuition fees only) and
that surely is worth a punt! There will be further small prizes to
supplement the prizes above.
All proceeds of this raffle go to the Sore Fingers Summer Schools
sponsorship fund which is helping young people attend the great event and
ensure the Bluegrass scene lives on after all of us oldun's kick the bucket
(Charming, ed).
So do help us to continue raising funds for this essential cause.
We also have two Eastman mandolins (an "F" style and an "A" style) for sale
with proceeds to same fund. These have been donated by Laura Leader of the
Cool Mandolin of America and we are asking for sensible offers for both
these instruments. Interested? Give us a call or email the usual address.
See you all soon

Moira and I are still chilling out in Cornwall after a highly successful
Cornish Bluegrass Festival. Best weather yet I reckon, Sunday was just
blistering.
We have only spent three nights at home since August 31st when we set off to
build up the Didmarton site and we have since visited the Sweet Sunny South
Old Time Festival near Hastings to perform for the last time with the Kitty
Hawks. We hadn't planned on visiting Cornwall this year but after a little
arm twisting from Maurice Drew (well done mate!), here we are!
We fly to Nashville on Saturday to the IBMA trade show. We can now
officially announce that September is Bluegrass Month in our annual
schedule!
But we still have the last big show of the year to look forward to in the
guise of the Sore Fingers October Weekend at Kingham on 23rd to 25th
October.
Bookings are a bit down and we could do with a few more enthusiatic students
to make up the numbers. Banjo of course is getting full and we may employ
and additional tutor if required ut there are places on everything else with
the Bass class in crisis with just two students at present.
Bookings are still open and we'd love to hear from you if you wish to get a
last dose of Bluegrass or Old Time before Christmas!
The full line up of tutors is as follows:
Autoharp: June Maugery
Bass: Richard Partridge
Banjo: Howard Burton
Fiddle: Greg Smith
Mandolin: Percy Copley
Guitar: Jason Titley
Dobro: Bill Dalton (assisted by Pete Wraith)
Singing: Gary and Sherryl Payne
Old Time Fiddle: Jock Tildesley
Old Time Banjo: Bill Whelan
Booking forms are downloadable from the website
Hope to see you soon

This year at the Didmarton Bluegrass Festival, which takes place from 4th to
6th September, at Kemble Airfield, near Cirencester, the British Bluegrass
Music Association (BBMA) is introducing a brand new learning scheme.
The idea behind this innovative concept is that anyone of any age or ability

Spare instruments will be available, with the aim of enabling festival goers
to try out a new instrument.
The instruments offered include banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and Dobro ®.
Lessons on these five instruments will be covered by three experienced
British teachers, John Breese, Charlotte Carrivick and Laura Carrivick. The
half hour lessons, costing only £10, (£8 for BBMA members) will take place
in a purpose built marquee.
Lessons will commence at 1200hours (noon) on each day (Friday and Saturday,
4th and 5th September) with the last session from 1500-1530hours.
Sign up sheets will be available at the on-site merchandising stall.
Alternatively, slots can be booked in advance by sending an Email to

provide your Name, Address and Telephone number together with your choice of
lesson:

It's that time of the year again and things are all falling into place as
Moira, John and the rest of the dedicated team put the final touches to the
festival organisation.
Apart from the fantastic line up of music we have programmed, we have other
good news: there will be showers at Didmarton this year! Our friends at
OGRI have successfully negotiated with the land owners and come to an
arrangement to allow us to drain into the airfield's system without causing
an environmental disaster! So, we can all keep clean this time around!
For the first time we are being sponsored by a couple of high profile music
industry suppliers, the Santa Cruz Guitar Company and microphone
manufacturer, audio-technica who have kindly made available some products to
be given away in the first Didmarton Prize draw. Details appear in a
separate press release on this website.
In order to support these generous people we are accommodating a trade stand
for Santa Cruz and they will be displaying their fantastic guitars during
the festival. There could well be a few wiz guitarists doing demonstrations
as well. The prize draw guitar (a dreadnought Model "D") will also be on
display on the stand, take a look and buy a raffle ticket or two!
The microphone is the favourite for bands who prefer to use a single mic on
stage and the best exponent of this technique and users of the
audio-technica "AT4033", the New Essex Bluegrass Band will be doing a
"Single Mic" workshop explaining the secrets of getting the best out of this
practise.
That and with bands like Mountain Heart, Chris Newman and Maire Ni
Chathasaigh, Rabbi John, Carl Jones and Beverly Smith, A band like Alice,
The Scoville Units, The Carrivick Sisters, etc, it's going to be a fun
weekend!
There are so many in attendance on the Friday that we have extended the
programme to begin on main stage at 1pm on Friday so you will be getting
even more for your money this year.
If you've been before, you know why Didmarton is Britain's Premier Bluegrass
festival and quickly turning into one of the South West's favourite acoustic
music festivals. If you haven't been, you need to come and find out more!
There's more info on the website and there are plenty of tickets available.
Go to www.didmarton-bluegrass.co.uk <http://www.didmarton-bluegrass.co.uk/>
now!

Press release dated 24/07/2009
Didmarton Bluegrass Festival has received two very generous offers of
sponsorship:
UK Agents for the Santa Cruz Guitar Company are offering a Model “D”
Dreadnought guitar as first prize in a draw promoted by Didmarton Bluegrass
festival 2009. For a full spec, follow this link:
http://www.santacruzguitar.com/acousticguitars/details/dreadnought.html.
These instruments are played by many high flying guitarists and flatpicking
luminaries worldwide. We are delighted to have Santa Cruz with a stall at
the festival displaying their fantastic product range.
Audio manufacturer Audio-Technica also agreed to sponsor the festival by
donating, a firm favourite for single mic performers, their famous
Audio-Technica AT4033 Condenser Microphone. You can get more information
about this mic by following link:

A revival of single mic technique for Bluegrass bands a few years ago soon
identified the AT4033 microphone as one of the best tools for the job. It
is used by many Bluegrass and Old Time bands all around the world. Its
qualities have been proved impressively many times over on stage in live
situations.
We are proud to have made these associations and of being able to offer the
guitar and microphone as prizes in the Didmarton Bluegrass Festival 2009
Draw. Tickets will be available shortly priced at just £2.00 each.
Additional prizes will include a free place (tuition fees only) for Sore
Fingers Week 2010. There are several runner up prizes including free

In my opinion this is exactly where this sort of thing need publicising. Why
oh why do people want to let governments get away with such stupidity as
this. Like it or not politics affects us all and the more we let them get
away with unchallenged stupidity the less right we have to complain when all
our rights have gone. What other better medium does billinwales think there
is than a newsgroup dedicated to live music and read by the very people who
will suffer the most if this rule is not changed. Go for it I say because I
know where the delete button is on my keyboard if I dont like the message.

political , allthough a great idea if it becomes law , the asking people to
sign the petition is wrong. I will contact the list owners a de-register

MUSIC AT THE LAST DITCH! Petition to amend legislation
Hi all. Maybe you would let folks know about this? Please do help by
filling in the no 10 petition and circulating the news pdq as we are.
Best' Geoff. ~:O)
The LibDem Party have proposed a Live Music Bill, which will exempt
venues with a capacity of less than 200 from music licensing, exempt
performances by two musicians or less and ban the Form 696. If you want to
support this bill, sign the No. 10 petition below!
The Bill has passed its first reading
Please support this Bill by signing the No 10 Petition at:
http://petitions. <http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/livemusicevents/>
number10.gov.uk/livemusicevents/
The petition reads:
> We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to stop
> criminalizing live music with the Licensing Act, and to support
> amendments backed by the Culture, Media and Sport Committee,
> and the music industry, which would exempt most small-scale
> performances in schools, hospitals, restaurants and licensed
> premises.
>
> Under the Licensing Act, a performance by one musician in a
> bar, restaurant, school or hospital not licensed for live music
> could lead to a criminal prosecution of those organising the
> event. Even a piano may count as a licensable 'entertainment
> facility'. By contrast, amplified big screen broadcast
> entertainment is exempt. The government says the Act is
> necessary to control noise nuisance, crime, disorder and public
> safety, even though other laws already deal with those risks.
> Musicians warned the Act would harm small events. About 50% of
> bars and 75% of restaurants have no live music permission.
> Obtaining permission for the mildest live music remains costly
> and time-consuming. In May, the Culture, Media and Sport
> Committee recommended exemptions for venues up to 200 capacity
> and for unamplified performance by one or two musicians. The
> government said no. But those exemptions would restore some
> fairness in the regulation of live music and encourage
> grassroots venues.
>
Please also circulate this message and ask your friends to sign in
support of the petition. This time we want to send a clear and loud
message to Downing Street.

Bill,
I can see you point as the proposal for the new legislation comes from the
Liberal Democrat Party and could be seen a lobbying directly for the party.
But, there are many petitions of this kind on the link included in the
message from Geoff and these are not linked to the party directly, they
merely allow individuals of any political alliegence to express their
support for new legislation. The same link has been sent out by several
organisation with music as their prime interest.
Put another way, a quite despicable party might propose legislation which
would horrify most descent living beings. If you are able to sing a
petition against it, it means you have a democratic way of expressing your
views.
So whilst I would take a dim view of forum members posting party political
messages on this site (and they would be removed forthwith), I think in this
case, we juts have a party proposing legislation which would facilitate the
live performance of music in pubs and clubs around the country.
It is timely as the Licensing act 2003 is under review and this change could
be important to all of us who want to protect the facility to run sessions
in our local pubs. Many pubs lost that when the new licensing act was
introduced a few years ago.
So whilst I fully understand you concern, I really don't believe in this
instance the message was party political broadcast for the Liberal
Democrats.
Best wishes
John
