Most interesting... For I suspect I attended the King Crimson
performance preceding yours at Oberlin: Oct 31 1981 (Halloween)
at Carnegie Mellon University.

How did you learn Fripp held the Oberlin performance in such high
regard?

Indeed, I seem to recall them playing Frame by Frame a second time as
their encore at CMU ... They had played it as the opening shot for
the show, and the memory of hearing those first several bars still
gives me goosebumps. It was masterful.

BTW -- Have you seen the photography book that Tony Levin published?
You may recall that at one point in the show he suddenly snaps a photo
of the audience. He subsequently compiled and published them in a
book.

Is this the same Tony Levin that's touring with Larry Fast?
I heard that Larry got to perform a Synergy tune when he toured in New York
with Tony.

I was there, too. I am from Pittsburgh, and saw them at CMU on the
last night of my fall break, then drove back to school and saw them
AGAIN the following night?

Um...he said so? At the time to students present at the college, and
later, in at least one interview.

That was the conventional encore for the show. For Oberlin, they came
out and played Thela Hun Ginjeet all over again as a second encore.

I haven't seen his photos or read more than a little bit of his
autobiography, but what I read, I liked. He's a fun guy; I've never
met him for more than a hello and a handshake but my Kevin Bacon
score for him is a 1 (we both played on the same album).

Nah, only 22 years. No big whoop. :)

That's the same Tony Levin. He and Larry went back all the way to
Peter Gabriel's first LP, and toured with him for years. Larry
stopped playing keys on tour with PG before _So_ came out, but he and
Tony remained friends, and Tony reportedly let Larry build in about
15 to 20 minutes of any Synergy material he wanted on their shows
together. I am really bummed that I didn't get to see that tour; I
have only seen Larry live once, in 1983, and have only met him very
briefly at an AES show in 1997 in New York. Both peak experiences.
He's a really great guy, very friendly and open to his fans.

Levin came through town with his band a year ago. It was fun
watching him play Chapman Stick and some of the electro-acoustic
thingies, but the music was mostly forgettable fusion.

Larry indeed is a great guy. He started sending me his CDs as he was
remastering the old Synergy LPs. Then I met him in June, 1999 at the first
NEARfest. He's an interesting guy who is more than happy to answer whatever
questions you might have. I've since seen him at subsequent NEARfests where HE
recognized ME and asked about how things were going at Lucent (while I was still
an engineer there). I interviewed him at the 2002 Alfa Centauri when he played
his Synergy material and released his new recording of some of those tunes.
This project all stemmed from playing one of his tunes in Tony's show. I last
saw Larry at the 2003 AES. (Thanks for getting me in, Mike!!!) Larry was as
nice as ever, though rushed to see other people he rarely gets to see. His wife
was with him and she's nice, too. She remembers me from when we all sat
together during one of the acts at Alfa Centauri.

Cheers,

Bill

FYI, there's a live recording of Larry Fast's composition 'Phobos' on the Tony
Levin Band album 'Double Espresso'.

Hey everybody!

I hope you're all doing well and that preparations for the holidays
aren't too stressful!

I can't believe it's been three months since Different Skies. Sheesh...
Anyway, I just found the paper again that lists the CD's that were sold
at the show, and I got around to balancing the checkbook. In the next
couple days, I'll be sending out some questions about CD's to make sure
that I have the correct people associated with the different titles.

Also, I have two track mix downs of the shows. I'm going to extract
each different act and cut CD's to be sent out to anyone that wants
one. I think I've got addresses for most of you - I'll contact you
if I don't...

So, that brings me to a question - I'm interested in playing some of
the cuts on the air during my DJ gig on Wednesday mornings. Before
I can do that though, I need to get everyone's official permission so
the station is happy. Please let me know if it's alright if I play
the tracks from your performance...

The station is streaming on the web, so if you're interested, I can let
you know when I'll be playing something and you can tune in... :-)

Thanks, and happy holidays!
-Doug

Hi Doug
You have my permission to play anything that I participated in.

Are we going to make some kind of DS2003 highlights CD?
Might be nice to have this to sell at next year's show, or as a promo.

I'd like one of everything to play on EMUSIC, please.

You have my permission to play anything that involved me. WDIY and WMUH don't
require permission because they assume that it is implied with the sending of a
promo CD. But I can see how CDRs of an event differs from that situation.
Please let me know if WDIY and WMUH also have your permission to play your stuff
from Different Skies.

Not a bad idea. Put it on Atomic City and have all the usual outlets carry it,
too.

Thanks for doing this, Doug. It makes life a lot easier on the Founder and
Coordinator, who is currently foundering in an uncoordinated manner.

If you can find anything remotely worth streaming on my set, feel free.

If you now have the complete two-track mixes, Doug, I need two complete sets
sent out. One to me, for consideration for that "highlights" CD that Greg
mentioned... I do want to do one but need to listen to the material first and
talk to folks that have plans for some of it (esp the Fragment Boyz) to see if
we can snag bits to use. The other needs to go to Dave Tristram, who is
desperate to get started on his DVD work for the show (Dave, your five-DVD set
of Woodstockhausen stuff is on my desk as I type and I'll be writing you about
it soon).

One last item: we're going to be consolidating the .com and .org sites into
one place soon (many thanx to Greg for his early-adopter work on my behalf)
and adding a lot more photos to the pictures page. I will hopefully be able to
get Sue Anaya's official archive pix to Doug for inclusion, but other people
may want to send copies over to Doug if they can, or arrange for him to
download them. I really want to get a comprehensive photo site, including the
many pix on the Yahoo group site, out where the public can see it.

More later,

mike

Actually, I haven't seen it yet. I really have made completing WSH a priority.
There is one more rev of the disc's to do, with the finalized credits. As soon
as I get the audio I'll be able to start on DS.
Best,

   Dave T,

Did you actually get video of the finale of the last set, with the Official
Anthem? I think we need a QuickTime movie of that up on the site somewhere. I
have the audio from Jeff Kunzelman's stereo mic feed, but no video...

Dag Eric,

On behalf of Xeroid Entity, thank you for listing our gig at the
Deerhead Inn. I'd also like to inform you about two other events:

Event Name: Different Skies <http://www.differentskies.com>
Dates: October 4-10, 2004.
Venue: Arcosanti <http://www.arcosanti.org>, Arizona, USA
http://www.arcosanti.org
Web site: http://www.differentskies.com
Contact: info@...
Yahoo Discussion Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/differentskies

Different Skies is an electronic music concert series and workshop that
takes place at Arcosanti in northern Arizona.

The first Different Skies event took place on September 8-14, 2003. The
main concerts were on September 12 and 13 and were a smashing success,
with an enthusiastic crowd and marvelous music and visuals.
Participants included (in alphabetical order): Dave Brewer (solo
artist), John Duval (Dweller At The Threshold), Bill Fox (Xeroid
Entity), Dave Fulton (Dweller At The Threshold), Brian Good (Sundagger),
James Lacey (Mutation Vector), Mike Metlay (solo/Team Metlay), Otso
Pakarinen (Ozone Player), Giles Reaves (solo/Etherium/Spacecraft), Clark
Salisbury (Dweller At The Threshold), Paul Vnuk, Jr. (Ma Ja Le), Tim
Walters (solo/Shalmaneser), and Greg Waltzer (Xeroid Entity/Mutation
Vector). Incredible visuals were provided by David Tristram of Tristram
Visual, assisted by Duane Ford. Audio and technical support were
handled with aplomb by Doug Wellington.

The Different Skies Yahoo list <http://www.differentskies.com> is
handling discussion of topics relating to the 2003 event, such as the
creation of recordings for public release, and preparation for the next
Different Skies, currently scheduled for October 4-10, 2004. Please
join the list if you want to follow the preparations for next year!

=============

Event Name: SYNAPTIC CONFLUENCE
<http://waltzer.crosswinds.net/pandemonium/confluence.htm>
A Spacemusic Retreat
Bringing musicians together in a natural setting to encourage the flow
of creative energy.
Sponsored by the Pandemonium Symposium electronic music collective.
Dates: Monday, May 3 through Friday, May 7, 2004.
Location: Sky Lake Lodge <http://www.sky-lake.org/index.html> in the
Catskills of NY http://www.sky-lake.org/index.html
Web site: http://waltzer.crosswinds.net/pandemonium/confluence.htm
Contact: egwaltzer@...

Since the earliest days of humanity, music has been an activity that
people share. Participation in the group experience has many healing
properties, and also helps to build a sense of community. Plus it's
fun! But in recent years, music seems to have become more of a product,
something to be packaged and sold, rather than enjoyed as a social
activity. The Synaptic Confluence hopes to recapture some of that
primordial pleasure, by providing a communal context for creative
expression.

Hello, all -

I am a friend of Tim Walters (if I may name-drop) and have been following
the discussions on this list with much interest. I am also a composer and
performer of electro-acoustic music who would be honored to join your ranks
at the Oct. 2004 event, if possible.

Just wanted to introduce myself, and express that interest. Back to
lurking....

Sincerely,

Heather

Well, it figures: the list's quiet for months, and the night before I
leave for five days there's a thread started up. :)

If every single person that has committed so far to the show actually
makes it, we're already full up, but I don't know how likely that is,
so I'm maintaining a waiting list. It's pretty short right now, so
there's a chance you could make the cut depending on what happens in
the next few months. I won't cast anything in stone probably until
the beginning of summer, when preparation will heat up a bit.

Anyone reading this list needs to do several things as soon as
possible. First, send me private email saying you want to be on the
waiting list and telling me a bit about your music (if I don't
already know who you are and what you do, as in the case, for
example, of Jim Combs or Heather Perkins). Second, if I don't have
any examples of your music, you need to send me some. Third, please
take part in the discussions here--even if you're not coming out,
input and interest are important and show that you're actively
interested in the goings-on.

The one thing I never expected was having to turn people away, but
last year's gang was just about the right size...and we're already
stretching things a little by including two more musicians than last
year, not to mention training up people to run the mixer so Doug can
get stage time this time around (bring your bass, big guy). I'll do
the best I can to accommodate people, but overcrowding is a serious
issue from a stage-time and housing standpoint, as those who where
there last fall can attest.

Heather, I have the Slaw CD on file, so you're good to go in terms of
what needs to be done to be on the waiting list.

One thing I should probably emphasize is that I am NOT rolling over
the waiting list from year to year; if you were on last year's list,
you need to talk to me AGAIN. If I gave precedence to people who
signed up last year and just added to the end of the list, the folks
at the bottom could be waiting a decade for their chance!

This is likely to be my last message for a while, as I'm leaving for
Anaheim tomorrow morning. It's NAMM time again, and Paul Vnuk and I
will be meeting with Robert Rich and Rick Davies of Amoeba, as well
as poking at the first Nord G2s in the country and whatever other new
bizarre synths show up at the show. Early rumors: M-Audio is
releasing their first synth (or digital piano, folks aren't sure
yet), and Korg is supplementing their new line of vintage synth
emulations with a special USB controller for the virtual MS-20 that
looks exactly like an original MS-20, complete with patch cords. I'll
try to check email remotely via the Web, but access from NAMM is
pretty crappy, so folks probably won't hear from me until Monday.

Please say hi to Paul and Robert for me. (I don't know Rick but say
hello anyway!) BTW, Greg already has his G2. Howard and I expect ours
before the end of the month.

High;

I've been lurking on this list for a while now. It's a really cool list.
Thanks for being. I've been fascinated with Acrosanti ever since Karl
Berger first told me about it back in the early 80s. The Different Skies
event is very exciting and i hope to participate someday.

In lieu of the closing/restructuring of mp3.com, i've put up a page at:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/6/jairrohmparkerwells.htm. There are some
tracks from my new cd "Exquisite Noise" up there. This is the "unofficial"
debut for "Loopadelica", my "...method of improvising with looping
devices". There will soon be a website up at: http://www.loopdelica.com
(don't bother going there now as it's not up yet, only the domain is
registered.)

Please, surf over and listen to the tracks. I'd really appreciate some
feedback from this community that i love and respect so much.

Thanks and i look forward to hearing from you all.

Jair-Rôhm

Since you guys are so sold out on the Nord, maybe you should get Clavia to do
a write up on Xeroid Entity,... or perhaps use you in their ads.
