Wow, it's been so simple all this time!
I sure wish she would - if she only could ... shame really. ;-)

Gotta love those moving targets. Her complaint is not that people don't
"take her seriously," it's that some people claim she doesn't write her
own music. Obviously her ability to play something "good, live, solo"
has nothing to do with that.

And why, exactly, does singing not count?

Just got back - lots of fun as usual, though the softer-than-normal
playa surface and the larger city (9 miles around rather than 7, and a
mile across on the *inside* of the camping circle) made it harder to
bike around. It was quite dusty Monday and Saturday, but there were 4
good days inbetween. I did one performance of music+graphics at
Entheon camp, and 2 nights of looped video camera experimentation at
our camp, using a security camera screwed onto a game controller for
controlling up to 4 video loops, overlaid. Fun to catch video loops of
people passing by - it often took them a while to realize that the
images they were seeing on the 2 screens were live loops from the small
device in my hand.

#1 - If one needed to "play something good, live, solo" at the same time one's
singing lead vocals in a live performance to demonstrate the ability to produce
quality work in the studio (the aspect in question in this case), that would
disqualify a lot of music producers, including ones we know. There's zero
correlation.

#2 - If being taken seriously were Bjork's primary goal, she probably wouldn't
make such an effort to keep the displays of zaniness and flesh going. She's a
performer, and I'm not sure scoring a high serious quotient is the point. The
point made in the article was that everyone deserves the credit when they have
actually done the work, and it would help if the media would check info and
correct misinformation.

The media outlet acknowledged the correction.

Respected music producers get respected because they make a public
deal out of being known as producers.

Likewise anyone who is known as a vocalist is going to have a hard
being taken seriously as a producer unless they spend some time being
a producer in a very public way.

Probably for the same reason that anyone who's known as a producer is
going to have a hard time being taken seriously as a singer unless
they spend at least a little promoting their singing.

This really shouldn't be controversial. There's no reason why someone
can't sing and do cool electronic stuff at the same time. The
correlation with studio processing is going to be obvious to most
people.

That was my point. Being zany and fleshy is an excellent disguise if
you want to hide whatever else you're doing, so I don't think it
makes sense to complain that no one else is looking at that if you
don't make a point of letting them see you in that mode.

Doing it live is an effective way to do that.

Or you can dress up as a swan and moan about not being taken
seriously to be credited.

My wild, speculative hunch is that Plan A will usually work better.

Maybe Bjork should ask Alison Krauss for suggestions on how to be
taken seriously as a producer and as an artist.

Can anyone point me to an example of Björk complaining about not being
taken seriously? Because she doesn't do it in the article being
discussed, which merely asks that people consult the credits for her
album rather than make shit up. I would think that one would have a
right to have one's compositions correctly attributed regardless of
one's apparel or live show arrangements.

I have a nice pedalboard setup that'll suit your needs. Got a chorus,
distortion, compressor and a volume pedal. On a powered board. All it
needs is an adapter to power it. If you have an extra multi-purpose
adapter laying around, here are the necessary specs: 9v DC/500 mA. One
with only 300 mA would probably work, too.

Gear masters:

I'm wondering what the "vocal" synth preset (as I'm confident I can assume it
*is* a preset given the band and period in question) heard at the very opening
of Tangerine Dream's track "Ride on the Ray," from _Underwater Sunlight_, is.

This sound is also used copiously throughout the score for _Legend_, as well as
on the title track from _Poland_.

Is it the "Arr1" preset from the Fairlight played in a lower range and with a
sharper attack than I'm used to hearing? That's my best guess, but I figure one
of you may be more confident of its origins.

(Other obvious possibilities that spring to mind are presets from the PPG line
or the Synclavier, both used heavily by TD in the same period.)

I've always been fascinated by the sound, and never thought to ask for help
identifying its source, so my thanks in advance to anyone who can be of
assistance.

It is almost certainly from the Roland JX-8P, Edgar's favorite lead synth of
that time period. I will have to listen to it again to remind myself.

I don't know that record (or much of TD - blasphemy!) but by the time
the Fairlight iicx was out, the patch is (or was) called ARR2 (maybe
ARR1 wasn't up to the grade - never saw it!). This is the lead sound
from "Shout", "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", pad sound on
"Screen Kiss" (Dolby), songs by Duran Duran and many more. Clive
Smith (fairlight use/trainer) told me it was an Australian singer
(name unknown), others have suggested it was Buffy Sainte-Marie) - it
would be interesting to find out...

I've got it with me if you want to hear it raw at DS...

Just done a bit of iTuning.

The sound Mike is referring to (I think) - a nice soft analogue
"ooooh" - is on the tail end of Song of the Whale, Part Two - almost
certainly a JX-something since I managed to program it up on my MKS-70/
JX-10(*) many years ago.

The sound on the opening of Ride on the Ray sounds sampled - I'd make
a wild guess at an Emulator II.

Believe Clive. I'll bet cash it's not Buffy. She was a Synclavier user, not
Fairlight, and her famous vocal texture library that got used everywhere was
called Sennevox.

Buffy has the dubious honor of being the first digitally-ripped-off sample
creator in history; she sent her Synclavier's Winchester diskpack back to New
England Digital for service, and while it was there, someone ripped her vocal
textures and made them available for distribution to other Synclavier users,
who used them in droves.

You are correct, sir! It was a favorite of David Turner's, hence the
confusion. He had a JX-8P whose presets he loved to death. There was one
particular preset he called the God Patch, because every time he heard and/or
played it he felt like he could die and go to Heaven happy.

Considering the era and what they used, you could be right, which of course
raises the question of where said sample comes from... E-Mu had a huge library
but that was the era of free and easy trading of samples (anyone remember
Emulator Parties?), so it could have originated anywhere.

I think we all understand this sentiment. My own list of woe includes:

'62 Jazzmaster
Korg MS 20 & X-911
EH microsynth, instant replay (x2), & vocorder
Korg MonoPoly
Digitech PDS 8000

That's the U-50 - still got it (somewhere). I had - and now have not -
the MKS-70 (JX-10 rack).

If I were to type my List Of Woe in full form, it would probably break the
archives of this list. Since 1984 I have bought and sold probably 200 or more
synths, controllers, effects boxes, and other doodads, and that's a
conservative estimate.

What do I truly, truly regret selling? That list is much shorter...

My 1975 Rickenbacker 4003 bass, massively customized and awesome sounding;

My original MIDI controllers: the original Roland AXIS and the Oberheim Xk,
and later the Yamaha KX5 (I had three and the first was in the best shape);

My Yamaha SPX90 (upgraded to the Mark II with the internal upgrade chip);

...and sometimes, when I let myself forget what a potential nightmare it would
have become as it aged and began to fail, my Sequential Prophet-T8.

That's really about it. A comfortingly short list!

LOL when it comes to kicking oneself over sold treasures you cats are rank
amateurs.
My list would fill this whole page. No matter if the sale was one for survival
or not, my list would break the hardest of gear junkies hearts.
So let the kicking begin!! hahaha : )

So who has (i) sold a particular item and then bought another one?
(ii) Sold a particular item and then bought back that exact same unit?
(iii) done (ii) and paid more to buy it back?

I freely admit that I am an amateur... here's my huge list of instruments I have
sold over the years

1-Roland D50 (now I have 2 more)
1-Samick "shredder" type electric guitar/pratice amp

ummmm yeah... that's it...

I am so pathetic in my gear junkiness

Allen

P.S. 10 days till I'm on stage at Arco setting up "StillStream Central"

This got me thinking.  I, like Mike, have sold a ton of stuff since the
mid-70s.  But now when I think back on it all, my only real regret is the
selling of my Synthi-AKS.  Sure, parting with my original EML-101 was sad, but
in retrospect, I really don't regret it now.  I snarfed up a VCS3 and a keyboard
that I used for a time, but it wasn't the AKS.
