I finally got to listen to what I recorded from the moat on Sat night.  The
ambiance was great and the back channels captured what they should have.  For
almost everything there is a slight slapback from the rear that really enhances
the front mix.  Of course, since the audience was directly recorded, the
applause and other stuff comes across clearly.  The only place where ther was
real clipping was the Farewell piece.  I think I can fix it, though, using RX.
Anyway, as far as I can tell, the H2 recorded everything withought a break on
all 4 channels.  As soon as I edit the file, I'll make a real 5.1 file.  Anybody
interested in hearing the real concert in 5.1 will have access.

It's about 70Mb. I'm looking into getting it transcodificationated
into a Flash viewer to make it more viewing-friendly. (Or, I suppose,
I could just YouTube or Vimeo it.)

Hey, DS'ers,

It ain't ambient, but this scuttled across my
screen whilst reading David Mellor's newsletter:

http://www.record-producer.com/learn.cfm?a=4629

Sort of a French cross between Frank Zappa and
Ray Stevens, and the band on the cover reminds
me of the gear porn video in some strange way...

Screw this. My video upload to Soundclick crashed again overnight.
Video production must hate me.

I'm going to upload Flash version to Vimeo and maybe high-res youtube as well
tonight if the stars align.

Otherwise I'm just going to send it to Mike and Jim on CD and let them decide
what to do with it.

I like your version a lot Nick, but it goes by so fast that the side-pranks
almost get lost. :)

Greg

p.s. I'm going to move on to editing some other video of rehearsals if anyone
wants it.

oops....just uploaded to Vimeo...(for the posh people)

http://www.vimeo.com/1859234

Tagituded it under Different Skies 2008.

Only consideration is that the music bed is from Thursday night's jam - so it's
unreleased.
I can take the video down and leave my Soundclick version as a 'subscriber'-only
access later this evening.

Let me know what you think.

Heading to work...

Good day!

p.s for you folks still 10 years behind in tech., I will also upload a youtube

even though their mouths are moving, and the music---I never

Vimeo is popular amongst the HD producer's networks for testing out cameras and
yes, 'arty' content.

Definitely not your Daddy's youtube anymore.

Hi, gang. My hosting service is moving colocation today and I'm
leaving for AES tomorrow. I have no email for the foreseeable future
at atomiccity.com, and unfortunately I have a few things to say or
ask of y'all, so Jim is forwarding this message....

1. Nick, I love the edited movie. I consider it a golden release
candidate for sure. Talk to Jim about hosting it, and we can make
announcements when it's ready. My only suggestion for it is a minor
one and may be too obvious... had you thought about putting in a
frame after the title that says something like, "So what did YOU use
at Different Skies 2008?" Just a thought.

2. Tim, no email contact so please call me on cell re: meeting in SF.
Did Mark get the finalized art with that last one-line fix?

3. Everyone: definitely push the recording/audition/edit/release
agenda while I'm gone. I'm going to be out of my insane scheduling
stretch by a week from Friday and should be able to be more proactive.

4. Everyone (and this is the really important bit): please jot down a
quick email detailing what you REALLY used this year... especially
important is what actual hardware, softsynths, and sound libraries
you were using, and on which songs. Email those lists to
mike@..., and CC them to my atomiccity.com address. I
need to hear from everyone if at all possible and have all those
emails in my inbox at work when I get back on Monday. I've been
asked, for the first time ever, to write about Different Skies in
RECORDING, and the Editor is particularly interested in how we used
soundware to realize the various composed pieces and jams. I want to
make honorable mention of Jeff's Minimoog, Greg W's Nord G2, Jim's
Nova, Klimchak's Marimba Lumina, Jeannie's iPhone, etc., but the
emphasis for this piece will be on software, from GarageBand
libraries to Supercollider and the monome. Many thanks in advance for
all your help on this! You'll all get a mention in the article, with
web links to your music if you wish (and if there's room).

Hell, we may even include a link to the gear movie. :)

Thanks and I hope to hear from you all very soon.

But it turns out there's a simple trick to playing the saxophone. Wish I'd

Minimoog
Please don’t mention it was rebuilt by Kevin Lightner. He made me promiss not
to publish that fact. Otherwise he’ll get a ton rebuild requests that he
can’t deal with. “Restored by a minimoog guru” is probably ok.
Moogerfooger Control Processor for when you really need 3 oscillators making
sound and still need an LFO.

Iphone thru external input on minimoog. I used this several times to play field
recordings done with a microtrack and rode NT4 and another with a late night
talkshow rant on subwoofer noise. Both used during the jams at some point.
Someone has a picture of this patched in.

Nord G2
The high octave organ sound on Mikes ambient piece, my piece and the p3
sequencer pieces both the show and jams.

Sequentix P3 controlling the Nord.

FX
TC Mone XL. Reverbs and Delays
Lexicon MPX100 when even more delay and reverb is needed.
DBX 166xl Compressor. Just to be nice and not let those resonant filter sweeps
kill people.
RME Fireface 800, Mixer, FX Sends monitoring. It gets the audio where it needs
to go.

Midi
Digital Music MX8 Midipatch bay.

OK, DS'ers,

It's not as if I haven't got work to do, but can
you imagine trying to write a new assignment for
beginning Python programmers so that they will
code up Rock-Papers-Scissors...after having done
this for 20 years! Jeesh! Where's the pool cue, eh?

So when the creative juices are bottled up, I do
something else, and this time it was to make, for
your pleasure, a 3D model of the Mighty ArcoDucks
driving away in a Cadillac after having stolen the
$61 ham.

There are actually two files, one for the paper
model of the Cadillac, and the second showing what
it will look like after you build it--IF you are
careful. If not, give it to any ten-year old who
knows how to handle an X-Acto knife!
