I agree (to both).

Hey, when did Sdfggs Dfdfgddfg Sdfgs Dfg sign up to perform? They're
great - I have all their albums.

Great graphics, Batman! I'd loose the future/retro font. I never liked
over stylized fonts. The font in white is much better than the one in
black. The web site is http://differentskies.com not .org by the way.
Oops, my bad. It works either way!

BTW, the web site still has 2003 data and only setup pictures from day
one. One would think that by now other photos would be available, too.
Would people be willing to pool their photos, .avi files, diary/journal
text, etc. for a 2003 momento CDR?

What application do I need to open an .EPS file? (I'm a PC guy if that
makes a difference.)

I would expect any graphics application worthy of the name to be able to
open it, although what happens after that will vary a lot. Photoshop will
rasterize it (fine if you know the destination resolution, not so good if
you don't), InDesign will place it but not allow you to mess with it,
Illustrator will give you complete access to all the curves, etc.

If you have Acrobat you can use Distiller to convert any eps file to a PDF.

There's also GhostScript which is a public domain PostScript viewer.

Newer versions of cheaper PC apps like PaintShopPro will also open an EPS.

Great Poster! I think something that looks just like that almost bit me last
year! I'm not so picky about the fonts - WE know more about them than
most folks would ever care to...and it does play to the mainstream vision
of electronics/computers etc. leaving little doubt as to what we're up to (for
better or worse....!)
Good to see you getting started so early - I'm already tasting those
crossants!

Whew! I was worried people wouldn't like the image, thinking it was a little
too weird. Good thing you guys are all wierd! ;-)

But it seems there is division on the choice of fonts. I have a lot of fonts
so I can look thru my collection to see what I have. I did want to convey
thru the font choice a feeling of electronic but maybe it's too retro. If
you know of a paticular font you'd like to use let me know. I do like the
eclipse effect though. So I want to keep that, maybe make it more obvious.

Keep the critique going, and try to finalize the performer list so we can
get this out early. I'm willing to contribue $200 towards printing it. I'll
see if I can get a bid from the printer tomaiki has been using for posters.
They just did a really nice poster of the hyperbuilding panel in the cafe.

Hey, everyone. This is just a quick note to all that Doug and I have firmed up
the housing situation with Arcosanti (thanxmuchly to Kelli Huth, who, as
everyone knows, totally rawks) and have made what I think are reasonable and
safe predictions about how many people we're going to have, doing what, and
staying where.

It is now looking solid enough that we will have a dorm room in the East
Crescent with room for six, in addition to the dorm building down the hill and
the SkySuite, that we can make plans accordingly. David and Duane (or other
folks) may want space up there, freeing up rooms in the dorm building, but the
numbers work out the same.

Most of these extra beds, believe it or not, are already spoken for: the stage
is almost as crowded as I think we dare make it, but there are non-stage jobs
that Doug and I are looking at filling for people who want to come out and
enjoy the event without a spot on stage. As discussed briefly here some weeks
ago, we have volunteers for helping Doug with the mixing and recording,
helping David and Duane with video work, the not-yet-dismissed idea of an
intern or two, and possibly even a film crew for a TV documentary.

Shuffling all the numbers, holding some places in reserve for reasons I'll
discuss later if they become relevant, and looking at space on stage, I think
we can manage to get one more person off the waiting list and into this year's
event before we get too bloated. We still have more people we can't
accommodate yet, alas, but they'll have to wait and see if we have
cancellations by stage performers over the summer.

In the meantime, please welcome one final musician to our roster. He is one
half of a duo in Atlanta who created, over the course of three remarkable
sessions in late 2002 and early 2003, two CDs' worth of some of the most fun
electronic music I've heard in some time. These two records form a live,
spontaneous gumbo of retro Berlin stuff, experimental electroacoustic noise,
some romantic touches a la Sr. V. O. Papathanassiou, and a healthy jolt of
modern chillout ambient pulse music to put a nicely modern sheen on things.

I refer, of course, to the remarkable debut CDs _one_ and _two_ by TouchXtone,
and it gives me great pleasure to welcome to our little barbecue the
enthusiastic and talented Jim Combs. Glad to have you aboard, Jim; I'll
complete the registration process by coming up with a stupid nickname for you
when I get a spare moment.

Now that our number is complete, I will try to write up a preliminary
announcement for the mailing lists, forums, our and other websites, etc., in
short and long versions, have it vetted here, and then get the proverbial word
out. Our next topic of discussion is what to do about a Friday night concert.
I will be talking to the Arcosanti powers-that-be about this as soon as
possible, and taking last year's events into account, I would like to open the
floor to discussion right away as to what we want to do about having enough
stage time for everyone and getting bums in seats for a Friday show at a venue
that has shown itself to be somewhat Friday-night-concert-unfriendly....

Thanks Mike! Looking forward to it. (I don¹t seem to recall nicknames being
mentioned on the Different Skies web site! What other ³details² have been
hidden from the newbies?!)

It¹s an incredible high to be invited to such an awesome event with such an
incredible lineup. I¹m still stunned and a little in shock. I keep staring
at my stack of equipment and try to imagine what¹s the least I can
bring/carry and still be versatile enough to contribute. A fun problem to
contemplate. TouchXtone has several gigs booked for the summer; I¹ll have
to do some Arcosanti prototyping rigs to see what works best.

This is a dream-come-true. Thanks MTR, HH, and OP. Wouldn¹t have made it
without you.

Wow, this is gonna be fun!

I don't know how many people saw my shorthand for each performer's

board on stage...

I am considering the same, possibly a gig at Jim Lanpheer's house to
shake down my rig... the problem with that is that I don't plan on
doing much solo work, if any at all, so it wouldn't be a fair test. I
should probably just wait until October 2nd and get Paul, Peter,
Nick, and Otso to jam with me at Lanpheer's the night before we hit
the road.... :)

Okay, I know Michael Thomas Roe and Otso Pakarinen, but who's HH?

That's the hope, anyway. I think I need to do a bit more playing and
drinking and a bit less worrying this time around. :)

Let me talk to Jim about it, and let Nick and Peter weigh in. It'd be
really informal; Jim's about the mellowest "promoter" in the world.
Concerts take place in his basement lounge and he serves food and
drink to artists and audience alike, before and after the show. My
only worry would be keeping the rigs light and moving in and out
fast: we have a commitment that afternoon, and would need to get
away, set up, play, and get home in time to get some sleep before
leaving for Arizona the next day.

THANK YOU! You remember how far it is from the airport to my house;
this is huge! :)

This is a big improvement over the previous font. It's not faux-modern, but it
is clean and snaps off the page. Very nice work, Jeff. (It's kinda creepy how
the Vaults at the bottom of the image are staring at you...)

Now we need to settle the data on the poster itself. We have a list of artists
as of last week, but I still need to call Joel and talk about whether we're
doing a Friday show. I think a Friday or Saturday matinee for the school kids
is pretty much a given, but a second show for a paying audience would be (a)
money in our pockets (b) not a no-brainer in terms of bums in seats, as we
found out last year.

If we do try to do a Friday show, I think it's only fair to warn everyone that
each attendee's fee will go up by a bit-- last year, Doug ate several hundred
dollars in PR expenses that he never tried to distribute among us, on top of
the money he shelled out for the video projector system, and I don't think he
can do that again. With proper poster distribution over the right parts of
Arizona, press releases crafted and mailed out in plenty of time (yes, Jim, I
will want your help with this!), and so on, we at least have a chance of
getting people to come and pay to see us. We'll be battling the one thing we
can't eliminate: the distance from everywhere to Arcosanti, which many find
daunting.

Thoughts?

people have heard of? A mixture of both? Something generic like "Featuring
space music artists from around the world"?

or I can next weekend. I can also send a CD overnight via DHL if the 110mb
download doesn't go so well.

Mike and all

I intended to go to both shows last year but working til 5:30 and then
hiking up to arco prevented me from attending the Friday show. IMO, its
easier for saturday as many people are off and can plan for the drive.

This might be way off base, but out in Sun City there is an Ampitheatre
that looks west, ever since I saw it about 2 years ago I have wanted to
do an ambient show there. The blazing sunset as music is loose and
melodic and as the sun dips and the stars emerge, total space ambient
bliss, chilling out in the grass and all. I can take a few shots of it.
Way closer than Arco but its going in a diff direction. Sorry

Heck, I thought about a night of space ambient at my house, could
prolly put 20 people in there, ditch the furniture.....someday for
sure. Little slight show, pillows, food and an intimate setting. Heck
the performer(s) could stay here too......just wishful thinking.
