Hi, DS'ers,

I went trolling YouTube to find something that wasn't done

with Songsmith. These two caught my eye and ear:

Category: Sweet to the point of Diabetic Coma

http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=rSAXjqi_ VlM

Category: The 10,001st night in the harem with Haroun Al-Raschid

http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=N4DyT3ScCeQ

The first one MIGHT have been what inspired Songsmith. It

sure sounds like it, given the travesties posted here. As

for the second, why in the world would anybody want to be

a terrorist, eh? Let's DANCE!

Cheers!

Have any of you organized electronic music concerts at a city park? I was
looking for any tips on dealing with the city parks department for these types

Yes. A park is a venue, just a grassy one. You may need to
negotiate these issues:

- Legal. Will you need a contract for the venue? Who in the
city provides it? Who signs? What responsibilities does the
signatory assume? If it is you, are you willing assume them?
Is there a deposit? Is any of it refundable? When do you pay
the deposit and usage fees? Are all fees stated up-front in
the contract, or are there others (some are mentioned in the
following points).

- Noise. When are you playing? How late? Is there a noise
ordinance? Can you get an exception? Are there penalties
if you don't or can't get an exception? Can you control both
the performers and the crowd?

- Stage. Are you going to play on the grass? Are you going
to set up a stage? Are there requirements or restrictions
on moving the stage into the park and setting it up? Are
you in union state (so union labor must be arranged)? What
does the Park Authority expect you to do to repair damamge,
if any, caused by the stage or performers?

- Power. Where are you getting power? Will you need to pay
an outlet charge for using or bringing city power to the
park? If generators are used, how will the noise affect your
performers? Where can they be located? In both cases, how
are you running the power cords? Is there an inspection
needed for safety?

- Weather. Need I say more? If you are in Seattle, it rains.

- Safety. Will you need insurance, and if so, for what:
Damage to the venue? Accident and injury to the performers
and members of the audience? Moving on, will you need help
with crowd control? Does the Park Authority expect you to
notify the local police, or hire off-duty officers? Is the
event going to sell beer, etc.? Will you need a temporary
liquor permit? Will the sale of liquor chage your insurance
requirements? What about carry-ins? Moving on again, will
the Park Authority provide or expect you to provide a safety
booth? Will an ambulance be needed on standby? Will children
be allowed to attend? Will you then try to arrange an event
for them? And if you do, wil you provide short-term day care?
And will THAT change your insurance requirements?

- Clean-up. When are you expected to breakdown the stage?
Who cleans up the venue (Park Authority, you)? When must the
venue be cleaned (that day, next day)? Who inspects the venue
afterwards? What will you do if it doesn't meet their standards
(which is why it helps to have some friends along)? Will you
get a signed copy at the end that closes out your contract,
relieving you of further responsibilities?

Working in the open is great, and a park can make a beautiful
venue, but it is difficult to control and is often set in a
neighborhood, whose residents may limit what you can do, when
you can do it, and how long you can do it for. If the Park
Authority has a bandstand or an open air shell or stage, you
will have fewer problems, but having been involved in a number
of music and non-music events, the organizer has a huge task,
and often an invisible and thankless one. Get it wrong, and YOU
will be on the front page of the local paper. Get it right, and
you may only get one line at the end of the story on the bottom
of page 16——which is what you want, believe me, you do.

Cheers!

Thanks Jonathan; great response! Which kind of confirmed what I
thought. Probably my best move is to tie in an event with a city
sponsored event, that way making 95% of those issues their problem and
not mine.

The city is building a very nice bandstand at a waterfront park not
far from me. I was looking at it yesterday and thought it looked like
a great location for an ambient music concert. We will see!

Attempted 15 years ago to co-produce a gig at Santa Monica pier for Earth Day.
By the time I met with all the councils and mayors, and porta potty vendors, and
band agreements, and unions (for in/out-loading chairs, etc.), I gave up.

It was WAY over my head, despite having a team of experienced show producers and
bands lined up.

I realize that this may be bigger than what you may have planned, but that's how
it was.

The other option is to go with a simple solar-powered gig at a site such as an
outdoor garden like I did at Descanso Gardens in LA that already has provisions
for food/toilets, etc. and do it there on their stage, since they already
(supposedly) have all the permits, insurance, etc. all setup ready to go for
acoustic concerts, classical quintets and so on.

This place is all setup for weddings, film crews, etc. - so they had
everything sorted out ahead of time for a flat rate - which may be a
good approach.

Hiya Ivan, if you're interested in having a park concert, I'd check it out! You
can start by getting a copy of an event application from the city clerk, or they
may have it online. From what I remember from my ad agency/event planning days,
everyplace is different, but they should spell out what's needed for approval
and what you cover vs. what they do.

There can be a big difference between high impact and low impact events. Our
clients were doing high impact events (thousands of people, streets roped off,
beer gardens, port-a-potties, contracting and paying for all the aspects
needed). That seemed kinda fun in my 20's, but I think it would pretty much suck
now.

But most city also have provisions for low impact events. For example, if you're
only planning on a few hundred people or fewer and/or your event is open to the
public (the usual park goers), then you may qualify for partnership with the
city where some things are covered. You follow their rules for amplified sound
and set-up etc., and their existing infrastructure is assumed to meet the the
needs of attendees (restrooms, trash removal etc.). I think with a low impact,
non-profit event you're also more likely to get the application fee (or other
fees) waived. So it may be worth it.

We have a lot of "music in the park" type series around here, that are nice and
low key, but I've not tried to loop into any because I don't think the
experimental electronic music that I'm working on with other people here really
matches what the usual concert goers expect! But I'd not thought of setting up
our own local outdoor concert and bringing in a small number of like-minded
fans. That's a cool idea. The Indy EM posse meets again in a few weeks, and if
we end up investigating anything like that for Indy, I'll let you know how it
goes.

Thanks Jeannie! Lots of good info. I'm definitely thinking a "low
impact event." Will see what I can come up with.

Why? Because Mike organizes DS and I just pay one low price,
bring my ass to Arcosanti, shut up and listen, and then
play. Maybe. Along the way I do the Good Citizen thing and
help, and maybe I snort a little Absinthe——I've been
reading about the vile drug!—and have fun. :-)

But Mike does all the REAL work, and I appreciate it.

Aain, why?

We-e-ell...

In 1998 I organized an international conference on
Information Processing in Cells and Tissues (IPCAT) that
was held in Indianapolis. The venue was determined by the
proximity to the Indy Airport. We had maybe 200 folks from
six of the seven continents.

I have never had a worse nine months in my life, and likely
never will, not being female.

After all the dust settled, the prices were paid, the Dane
Gelt bartered and the Conference Agency balanced the books,
I received a check in the mail for my department's return on
all the work. This was made more dicey since the IEEE had
a call on their share of the proceeds. They DID get it!

Still, a check arrived in the mail.

I opened it up and found a piece of paper entitling me to...

US$1.48.

As I say, "I Like Mike!"

:-) :-) :-)

Go for it Ivan!!!

Cheers,

Slate

PS-Hope to see you all at Arcosanti in October 2009!

Hi DifferentSkies!

My name is John Krikawa. While I've been on the list for almost a
year, I haven't actually read anything until now. Last year was a
year of sidetracking for me. Some of you may remember me back from
the sweeter days of EMUSIC-L. I've been away from the muse the last 7
years, graciously donating my time to a small brood of 3. I've
reassembled a small studio after a move last year and now I'm looking
to get back at it, and now that the little ones are more
self-sufficient, or rather, slightly less needy.

I've been thinking a lot about my studio and how I'd like to
re-establish my work flow and I'm feeling a need for centralizing
tasks a bit more so I can be more spontaneous without having to plan
stuff out with any great degree. I love improvising and I don't
really like to get stopped up by "details" anymore. I'm considering
an M3 and I'd be interested in any opinions anyone has about it. In
order to pay for it I am thinking about getting rid of my PC88,
K2000RS and my Wavestation EX, just to lose all the baggage and move
on. I'm not particularly attached to any one of them and I don't feel
the need to recreate anything from the past. A 7 year EM hiatus has
been helpful in that regard.

I hope everyone from the old EMUSIC-L are doing well and I look
forward to meeting the new folks here at DS over the coming months and
years.

best,
john

Yeah, I know Ge - he's the leading light in PLOrk and SLOrk (the
laptop orchestras) and the creator of ChucK. The Ocarina runs off a
port of ChucK to the iPhone, but unfortunately that's not directly
available.

Hi John...

Well, I started into this a bit oddly.  About 2 years ago I bought an X50 for
use as my traveling banger synth.  I found I liked the arpeggiators quite a bit,
and I started using it in my studio as well as for traveling.  A couple months
ago I was in the local Guitar center and saw the M50.  Of course, nobody there
was exactly how it differed from an X50 except for the touch screen and a real
joystick.  The price differential wasn't all that much between it an the X50
(about $500, I think), so I thought about selling the X50 on ebay and getting
the M50, if for nothing else than the joystick I miss from my Wavestation EX.
Then I started reading about it and I found that the M50 was a totally different
synth animal than the X50.  I learned that the M50, was really a stripped down
M3 in much the same way an X50 is a stripped down Triton LE.  So, I found some
curch guy who was overwhelemed with the complexity of the M50, and I got one on
ebay from
him for $790, I think.  That was in mid January.  In one of my purusals of
M50/M3 stuff, I found that KARMA-Lab (Stephen Kay) had just released KARMA-M50
for the M50.  Supposedly, this computer program turns the M50 into M3 junior.
Actually, all of the voice structures are the same, the M50 has the same PCM ROM
as the M3, and except for the sampling, aftertouch, and control surfaces, the
M50 actually becomes very much like the M3.  The key to all of this is KARMA.

So, I ordered KARMA M50 for $199.  When I got it and installed it on the
computer I had USB'd to the M50, I was floored.  KARMA M50 comes witht teh
complete program and combi sets of the M3.  I loaded the first combi preset
"Towards the Sun" and found myself about 3 hrs later still playing around with
it.  KARMA II is truly amazing.  I haven't had that much fun with a single synth
patch since I first startred playing with my Wavestation about 18 years ago.  In
the first 10 hrs or so of playing with the M50 presets, I got through maybe 7 or
8.  I've had KARMA 50 for a couple weeks now and I still haven't even auditioned
all of the presets in Combi Bank 1, and it has 4 combi banks (it also has 5
Program banks).  Anyway, you can do almost anything with an M50 with KARMA that
you fcan do with an M3 (except sampling and aftertouch), but the KARMA M50
emulation of the M3 control. surface leads a lot to be desired, and KARMA is
something that is really
controllable in real time so having to move KARMA sliders and switches with a
mouse is too distracting.  So, I bought a Korg Nano Konrtroller, which pretty
much solved a lot of the problems.

Early this week, I thought my whole studio over, and I first made the decision
to replace the M50 with an M3-61.  The M3-61 (and 73) have a really nice Fatar
synth action keyboard that provides aftertouch with more accuracy than any other
keyboard I have ever played (even the K2000 and K2661, to which I have become
very accustomed over the last 17 years).  You can accurately get about 150 of
the 256 values out of it gust guessing the pressure, and it swings from 0-255 in
a nice linear pressure curve.  On Wed I drove over to Miami and went to a few
music stores there.  I found an M3-88 in one place and I took some time with
it.  In my studio I have a Studiologic 880-Pro which has a Fatar weighted action
("Grand Hammer Action") that I really like.  The Studiologic felt very similar
to the real grand I carted along with me for many years, and it has a really
nice aftertouch implementation, as well.  Anyway, back to the M3-88.  The
keyboard is one of
Fater's most recent"Grand Hammer" versions with some improvements that make the
key throw even more realistic.  Also, like the synth weight M3 Fatars, the
aftertouch is much more controllable than it is on my Studiologic.  So, as I
played the "Pointy Ears & Beard Epic" Combi preset  (e.g., a prog rock preset
that is set up to use a chord progression that has been seriously over used by
Spock's Beard, with  wild KARMA drum and bass improvisations [KARMA is an
algorithmic realtime effect generator]), with a good portion of the sales staff
watching, I started thinking to myself "How cool is this"?  It was then that I
made the decision to sell the Studiologic, purchase the M3-88, and keep the M50
for use as my traveling banger (with the idea that I could develop stuff on the
M3 and port what I develop to the M50 for portable use..

So, I fguess you can tell how I feel about the M3.  Looking at what you are
getting rid of (the Wavestation. K2k, and PC-88), I'm figuring that once you
touch the M3, you will instantly make the decision to buy it.  First of all, the
action on the M3-88 is a lot smoother than the PC-88, which feels a lot like my
Studiologic to me).  If you shop around you can even find them for about $2300
or so.  However, I'd consider keeping the K2k, considering how the Kurz sound
compliments the M3 sound, and the fact that you are going to get depressed when
you find out how little a K2k is worth (even if you have P-RAM, full 64MB sample
RAM and a 2GB on-board disk).  Rignt now, I am pared down to the M3, when it
finally gets here, and my K2661.  Another option for you would be to also keep
the PC-88 if you like it, buy the M3 module (which can be had for real cheap).

Anyway, enough Bandwidth taken.  Hope this helps/

I hope everyone from the old EMUSIC-L are doing well and I look

forward to meeting the new folks here at DS over the coming months and

years.

best,

john

Isn't Outlook express part of the Windows install.  It magically appears on all

Can't figure out why no one has plugged these together yet.

I'm waiting for them to do Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla."

Hi John,

Can you point to a few instances of [album/song/start time/end time]
where this chord progression is used? What is the chord progression
that they're over using? I'd like to hear this for myself.

Cheers,

Bill

that's what I thought also but Idon't have it on my computer. Not sure how that
happens. Suz has it on her machine but doesn't the program have to be registered
to a specific machine? Only reason I'm asking is that I can't afford to go buy
it on it's own.
Thanks for responding
