Little brother is the third trumpet from the left. IIR, his take on this
was, "About average for a guest conductor."

What makes you think classical musicians pay any attention at all to the
conductor? :-)

That is SO cool! Your brother was there? Schwei!

I have no idea if they pay attention to the conductor. I *do*
have some new music "mentors" this year, in addition to my
original blues guitarist friend. One is a conductor who also
repairs wind instruments in retirement. He says that in his
experience the conductor sort of sets up a channel, like a
quality control engineer, and "steers" the orchestra into the
very best performance dynamics he can. But he claims he was
an "advisor, not a dictator." Did you catch that, Jim? You
said about the same thing at DS'08.

My second and most recent mentor is a violinist who plays in
several orchestras in the US and Europe, and has two VERY
expensive violins whose sound I cannot imagine capturing in
a patch. One, the $20,000 violin, was made with wood that he
lived with during its crafting. The bow alone cost over $2,000.
His $300 carbon fiber bow he calls "crap."

We have had long talks on expression and style, and he is doing
his best to help me get rid of the "electronic" sounds in my
alphorn pieces. He can hear things that I would never have heard
without his tutelage. Overtones, harmonics (he knew a saw wave
was in the original patch I built for the alphorn because he
heard the harmonics) etc. He has offered suggestions to revise
my patch. He has also played an alphorn in Europe, and knows
how things like emboucheur sound, and what a novice (i.e., noob)
alphornist can play. So I'm back to eight notes to practice with.

Yes that dirty word again.

There is no escape, even on a synth. Although he thought my little
trick was "clever," it was not a compliment. For some reason he
likes my music and thinks it has potential. Not much, but enough
that we have coffee every other week.

Nice to live in Bloomington. We have a good School of Music, and all
that that implies. When the pupil is ready, the teacher is not far
away!

;-)

Cheers!

Greetings Mac Experts,

Every now and then, my wireless mighty mouse loses communication with my
iMac. To restore it, I've been pressing the power button behind the
monitor on the left side; once to turn off the screen, and once to turn
it back on. No data is lost and communications are restored.

Now please tell me what I'm doing wrong and what the correct procedure is.

Cheers,

Just a timely reminder to tune in tomorrow night(i.e. Monday)to my

Just look for the links at the top of the page for listening options.

And no....you don't have the option of 'not listening'.

These are merely different methods of accepting the stream...as the basic act of

Enjoy ;)

Hi, Bill,

I don't know, but I work with a guy who might. Would you give
me permission to pass this question on to him? So far no one
has sent a reply, or if they did, it was private.

BTW, your piece "Ada or Linda" was one of the ones that listening
to at my leisure after DS'08 helped me improve my music. Just a
brief note of thanks.

Cheers!

No problem. Permission granted 'cause I still need an answer. (I've

That was Tim's piece, the second half of what was presented as
Sidewinder Linda at the concert. I just played (badly) on it.

There's an old pamphlet of cartoons called "The Orchestra." Among other
things, it contains drawings of the conductor, as seen by the various
sections of the orchestra. I don't remember them all, but the string
section saw the conductor as a shepherd, leading them through, well, who
knows what. The brass, on the other hand, simply saw an empty podium.

But in an emergency a carbon fiber bow can be used as a rapier in a bar
fight. For when you take your expensive violin to play that Skynyrd
cover band gig.

Years ago I dated a woman who was a DJ on the local classical station,
and had a degree in opera conducting from IU. At one point I asked her,
"So what's it like to have a degree in an inherently dead field?"
Inexplicably, I think the relationship ended soon after.

We might have already covered this before it was on my radar...but any
recommendations for a reliable and affordable wireless mic? Plus whatever else
you need to make-it-go?

It would be for vocals. Probably not so much for talking. (Even though I'm
scared of the former, I'm probably more scared of the latter.) Thanks!

Jeannie, I highly recommend the Sennheiser wireless systems. There are
quite a few to choose from, depending on what sort of mic you want, lav,
cardioid, headset, etc That's what I used for DS07 & 08 and I am very
happy with them, good range, and no interference

Prices range from @$500 up to $1200 depending

Cheers

Audio-Technica also makes some good ones. ALL brands make inexpensive ones and
I would really recommend staying away from them. Quite often you can find deals
on used systems; Craigslist, etc. Churches seem to go through various systems
quickly.

Do you want a handheld or headset mic?

Hi Allen and Ivan, good to know. I thought a headset mic sounded cool since I
need both hands to play instruments and I'm not exactly super coordinated.

But after seeing the investment that takes, I'm going to stay with a gooseneck
mic. Or I could just work on *not* bumping into a regular mic stand I guess :-)
Thanks

Subject: Proposed piece for DS 2009, "Timeline of the Universe"
shamaniaq
Send Email Send Email

Good afternoon, DS'ers,

I have been working on a piece for the entire DS orchestra
and even those who cannot attend but who can send me an MP3
clip to inject at the proper time. (I'm bringing a Roland
Sonic Cell this year.) Jim Combs, you could do your special
syncopated shakin' and rattlin', and Klimchak you might
contribute the cool Marimba Lumina doing hang drums.

This piece is derived from the 1984 FermiLab timeline of the
universe from the Big Bang to Now. It goes a bit further by
including a period of silence before the Big Bang to represent
the unknowable; the singularity. It also may be bad physics
but acceptable music to trigger the switches to expanded
groups and/or styles of performances with "Little Bangs" that
will, hopefully, reduce or remove the need for a conductor.
(And didn't Brian just say that the orchestra ignores the
conductor anyway? ;-)

As the diagram shows the piece evolves from some tones and
drones by adding percussion, then notes of a scale, then
more instruments (see the matrix of parts at the middle
left of the diagram), then melody, then adding harmony and
finally a period of improvisation to represent intelligent
life in the universe.

This year I will have simple scoring and chords as well as an
MP3 of the piece as it is "drafted" to give an idea of what it
might sound like, but not what the group could build it into,
if it is accepted for performance.

The file is available for you to examine and comment on, and
the scoring will be uploaded soon. The MP3 should be ready
sometime in a week or so.

This one is intended for everybody. I hope you will enjoy it!

Cheers!

Yea that one too. Hell, they're all bitchin. Listened to the whole thing
twice today and I'm really getting off.

I'm really liking the way you can listen to the catalog now. For some reason
the stream doesn't choke like it did before. I'm on my computer most of the
day now and at any given time I may have two, three and sometimes four apps
open at the same time. I listen to SS a lot and sometimes the audio stutters
or gets chopped for a few seconds. Today I started listening to the EM
catalog and there is no problem at all. Listened to Altus and now Haven.
Everyone here has such wonderful vision and execution. I'm really humbled to
be included in such esteemed company.

You can always get a wired headset mic. Just have to remember you've got it on
when you try to walk off stage...

This is going to give you a bass-ackwards musical structure. I mean, all

Somewhere I think I have some sound files that are sonifications of some

And still has a rise in blood pressure when she remembers a comment from a
