Excellent!!

I recently took part in a Video Games live concert and loved the
interactive T Shirt thing they did ... the wearer became the shooter
in Space Invaders!

v. funny to see them running around the stage as it was tracked on the
huge screen above the stage

These look great. I haven't forgot about the new DS website I was working on.
This is good inspiration to get busy on that project again.

OK, if you go into the Files area for this group, you'll find a new tray
file in Arcosanitarium ART and a new inside and tray file in That
Merciless Sky ART. The old files were renamed with "-OLD" appended to them.

If someone is truly agonizing over something on one of these files that
wasn't done right or really needs to be fixed, tell me right away; I'm
sending them over to Darrell tonight because I won't get a chance to
work on them again before he needs to upload them.

Hey, DS'ers!

We could even go so far as to dispense with controllers, EWIs and
pads, and use the T-shirts as our input devices.

Check out the MIT AudioPad here:

Cheers!

I just reviewed this for RECORDING. Yes, an actual review; they sent one
to us and Lorenz went bananas and insisted that we yank a legit review
and replace it with this instead (since the January issue will reach
subscribers well before Xmas). Naturally you'll have to wait for the
review to be published to learn my findings. Meanwhile, I've promised
Lexie I'd teach her how to play -- what else? -- "Smoke on the Water".

On the inside image for Merciless, it looks as if the lines of text
are too close together: the top of the "B" and "F" in "Bill Fox" are
cropped, presumably by the line above.

Or maybe it's just an artifact of the compression you applied to these
uploads - some lower-case letters appear to be affected as well.

Weird... The JPEG files are all absolutely crystal clear here, and I
assume that Darrell would have flagged me if he saw any drastic
readability issues. Could Yahoo have screwed up the file when uploading
it? I don't see how that's possible. Anyway, I don't see a problem and
no one else appears to see it either, so...?

Or at least a week: I get a weekly e-mail of new sales from AudioMIDI; sometimes
the "no-brainer" super-sales span multiple weeks, other times they don't. The
closing date is rarely advertised up front.

So, while the sale on the XILS 3 synth (read: VCS3-ish softsynth) may or may not
still be going next week, I should mention that the Nomad Factory Blue Tubes
Analog TrackBox sale "expires 12/6/09 at midnite" according to the first ad they
sent me -- by which I assume they mean it expires at 11:59 PM on the 6th, or at
12:00 AM on the 7th, but who knows for sure...

Anyway, here are the links:

Very funny! I spent more time than I ought to have in the UK shouting down sewer
pipe that was waiting to be laid to see if I could get an echo. I also took one
of the huge red abandoned plastic end plugs to use as a frisbee. Anyway, I
should have used smilies in the note!

Speaking of sewer pipes as musical instruments, I would love to know how
the horn section in Spike Jones' orchestra produced that horrific
wah-wah farting noise that was used for melodic emphasis in songs like
"Der Fuehrer's Face". Does anyone happen to know?

As for its being a joke, Brian, I didn't mind folks riffing on it for a
bit. Every year is another opportunity to try something a little
different, like 2008's strict limitation on number of instruments.
Cheapnis is an interesting option in and of itself, funny or not.

Not using Logic but my dept is buying me first computer in six years, rather
shamefacedly, too. The iMac looked like a winner but I opted for MacBook Pro
with 8Gb RAM and 500Gb drive.

Why?

I am gonna use it for M&P class and also load up cheap-ass softsynths & Cubase &
Virus TI software & use it at DS. Easier to carry than an iMac...

Dept is also getting me Akai mini-keyboard & pads. Or I may just ship my
Bumblebee. It's to die for.

Yep, softsynth virgin gets defenestrated. Or is that deflowered?

Cheers!

Hi John,
I am planning on trading some of my gear straight up for the Mac so will see
what I can get apple-wise for it. Hope to make it to DS 2010 with it also.
Appreciate your input as always.
Thanks
Ed

Cheers!

Hey,

I use Logic 9 and love it for writing, and midi and audio stuff.

I'm not too keen on the Mainstage software that comes with it for live
wok though .. it seems waaay too complicated.

for that Ableton Live just can't be beat!

I'd love one of those new imacs too, but again, for the live stuff a
macbook pro is pretty neat

Ed, some people have brought iMacs in the past and found places to set
them up on stage, but seriously, a laptop is way easier to lug around,
so if you plan to do a lot of mobile stuff, you might want to get a
MacBook Pro instead.

That having been said, Logic Studio 9 is what it is: Logic. Whether or
not that's a good thing depends on who you are and what you're used to.
Maybe I'm just weird, but I see a lot of my old favorite long-dead DAW,
Opcode Studio Vision Pro, in the newer versions of Logic. Since rev 7,
Apple has kept all of the original Emagic program's function set
available under the hood, but has done a lot to the user interface to
make the program kinder and gentler to people who didn't want the alien
brain implant that you needed to understand Logic 5. It's a very
powerful DAW, has lots of cool sounds built right in, and is pretty
straightforward to use.

The rest of the utilities and added content that come in the package
range from "that might occasionally be useful, what the hell, hard disk
space is cheap" to "Oh my God, how did I ever get on without this?". My
experience with MainStage 2 has been less than thrilling, but said
experience was very limited and under tight time constraints; I have a
feeling I'll be forced to use it more and more as we write articles
about it and probably a tutorial or two on how to keep it from sticking
its spoon in the wall right when you need it.

For now, I agree with Claire; Ableton Live may be an entire DAW, but its
CPU overhead is tiny and it makes for a very reliable host for
softsynths and effects plug-ins. (I have not QUITE decided that Live 8
is as good and stable as Live 7. What have other people's experiences
been? Keep in mind that I change my hardware configuration a lot, which
is something most people never have to deal with.)

I have Logic 9 and Live 8 and could probably do an entire show with
either of them and no external addons if I had to, the included synths
and effects are plenty good enough. I think Logic has the edge in terms
of synth and effect programmability and sound quality, but Live has the
edge in terms of stability and ease of use under fire -- Logic isn't
really set up for this sort of thing, which is why MainStage was invented.

You could do an entire show with a broken toy reed organ and a delay pedal.

Only half joking,
John

Sigh.

I could have had one for $1000 or maybe less in the early 1990s.
Hollowood Music in Pittsburgh had one and they couldn't give it away;
the M1 had made FM synthesis passe', and no one wanted something that
big and heavy that sounded like an FM synth. At the time, I had a
Prophet-T8, so the poly aftertouch keyboard was no big deal. It was in
their used gear room and it sat and sat and sat for years, untouched and
unloved. Dean Swan contemplated buying it because he finally learned
that Yamaha in its infinite corporate wisdom had destroyed the only
prototype of the V80FD that he wanted so badly, but he never did.

Eventually it was destroyed in a fire that gutted the store. DSers may
remember my incredibly ugly keyboard stand that looks like a pair of
insect wings, that I've left stored backstage at the Colly Soleri
amphitheatre along with one or two others; I got that stand for ten
dollars at the fire sale, as it was one of the few items that survived
the blaze unhurt. What a tragedy. Hollowood reopened and I think they're
still doing well, but that poor DX1 was gone forever.

Sigh.

Apparently I did the last update in 2007 but I don't see I'm the owner/manager .
Anyone can take over as the band manager once you have an lastfm account set up.
Lastfm works like wikipedia and anyone with an lastfm account can add or edit I
belive. To become manager there a link in the dropdown menu in he upper right
when you are logged in.
