Hey Tim

Glad to hear that your cataloging efforts are going well....
Regarding the tree, how do I figure in?.....I've lost track of who's
doing what and in what order......I'll be happy to do whatever is
needed, if I only knew what that was......

For those DS attendees who have been ensnared by the evil machinations of our
resident Finnish drug pusher: there is now a Finnish grocery exporter that has
been cleared by the FDA to send many of their products to the USA, including
most of the 30 kinds of salmiakki they offer. These include all manner of
salmiakki, from the relatively inoffensive big chewy ones to the unbelievably
obnoxious Xylitol Super Salmiakki that make you feel like someone poured Drano
up your nose and lit it (Otso, does "Liiallisella käytöllä voi olla
laksatiivisia vaikutuksia" mean what I THINK it means?) and everything in
between, including 2.2 kg bags of the stuff.

Please contact me (offlist, unless there's a need for list-based hilarity on
the subject) about putting together a group buy, or talking me out of
developing a really expensive addiction.

Doug W. is your source, so make sure he has your address. I dropped the
CDs (and DVDs, in Paul V.'s case) in the mail this morning.

Salmiakki is ammonium chloride, the active ingredient in the candy of the same
name, popular in Finland (and in Norway and Sweden, where it's called
"salmiak"). It comes in many varieties, but most are variants on a theme:
small black chewy candies that are made with a combination of conventional
licorice and salmiakki. Some are filled with pure salmiakki powder in the
center for extra kick, some are made with xylitol to help prevent tooth decay,
some are sugar-coated or otherwise sweetened, some are harder or softer, and
the very softest come in special shapes for little kids; the "real thing" is
usually scooped from bins at tobacconists' shops and sold in little paper bags
by the gram.

There's no real way to describe salmiakki's taste. It's like licorice gone
horribly wrong. Perhaps the scariest thing about it is how addictive it
becomes once you've tried it a few times. I mean, it ain't heroin, but it does
worry me that one can develop a hankering for a candy that feels like
roto-rooting your sinuses.

Wow! So, does it have, like, you know, "properties"? Sounds like
candyfied poppers or something. And perhaps not so good for you? Not
that I am Nancy Regean all of a sudden, but wow, that sounds hard core!

Here's what a quick Google turned up on ammonium chloride:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------
Label Hazard Warning:
WARNING! CAUSES IRRITATION TO SKIN, EYES AND RESPIRATORY TRACT.
HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED.

Label Precautions:
Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
   Avoid breathing dust.
   Wash thoroughly after handling.
   Keep container closed.
   Use only with adequate ventilation.

Label First Aid:
In case of contact, immediately flush eyes or skin with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
Wash clothing before reuse. If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not
breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give
oxygen. If swallowed, induce vomiting immediately as directed by
medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious
person. In all cases, get medical attention.

In the Netherlands and Belgium it's called "drop". Everybody knows what it
is, most people like it, and kids love it. You can buy it almost everywhere,
and in hundreds of different varieties.

Nah, it's not that powerful in a medicinal sense. Think high-yield menthol /
eucalyptus cough drops for something equivalently potent (but with an entirely
different flavor).

Come visit me in Boulder, madam. There's a legal, licensed absinthe den here,
if you really want to feed your brains to the green dragon...

Thank you very much, Tim. Eventually I will be able to give you time of day for
most of these segments. That's burned on the tape but I cannot read it without
an analog monitor connected to the recorder (!). Will do so at some point.

Naah, it's harmless. We used to make ammonium chloride in the chemistry
class when I was a kid, and eat some of it. Tasted like salmiakki
without the licorice and sugar.

Absinthe with Salmiakki Koskenkorva (the salmiakki liquor) could be
even more fun! Gotta try it someday...

Good for you! Is "drop" the English translation? If so, what is it
called in Dutch?

Hehe... No, "drop" is not the English translation. It's the Dutch word.

Greetings Everyone,

Some of you may remember talking to a local reporter who was going to
cover Different Skies for Big Bug Canyon News. Well, I got a
clipping from the Oct 13 issue from my mother yesterday (who lives in
Prescott, and came to the show of course) and I found an online copy
at the newspaper's website. Go to www.bigbugnews.com and do an
article search on 'Different Skies' in the upper right of the page.
The article's title is "Space music wows Arcosanti audience and
students", written by Andrew Johnson-Schmit. It's a nice article and
it includes an overhead pic of Bill, Greg and myself during the
Mutation Vector set, as well as a shot of Stephen Kelly (the rapper
dude).

Regards,
Dave B.

Well, there's my new .sig quote. :)

Nick, the term in the USA is usually "soccer mom", referring to a reasonably
well-off suburban parent who spends her time shuttling her kids to soccer
practice. This is interesting in this context for a couple of reasons.

One is the fact that the term "soccer mom" is well-accepted is an impressive
statement about how soccer, an essentially unknown sport in the USA as
recently as 20 years ago, has become quite entrenched in our culture (and not
yet totally destroyed by the big-media attention given baseball, football, and
basketball, and hockey...).

Another is that at least in my interpretation of the word, a soccer mom
doesn't work for a living; I wonder if he's implying that we're all
trust-fundies, or merely that this isn't our day gig? (I can't read the
article myself, the server's timing out on me. Maybe later.)

That's what I thought - don't they all drive big 5-ton gas-guzzling
SUV's since it's not safe for their children to be out on their own?

Anyway, I thought they were "security moms" these days, fixated on the
perceived intangible terrorist threat from those parts of the world
producing the oil to fuel those SUV's.

(Don't get me started...)

I got the sense that "soccer dad" meant we were approachable, old enough to have
kids as opposed to
being kids ourselves, and dressed like we were standing around cheering the

If spacesuits had been worn per my suggestion this wouldn't be an issue. I
picked up a nasa flight suit for about $60 on ebay. A different skies mission
patch maybe is in order for next year.

For me too. But I kept insisting and it eventually worked for me. I
copied the URL from the popup window, closed the popup, and pasted the
address into a regular Internet Explorer to allow me to perform a
File->Save As. Jim and/or Doug; I reccommend you do the same so we can
display the article on the web site... with the paper's permission, of
course.

It seems like their website can't handle much traffic (maybe that means >1
person :-) ). I've had some problems too. But I managed to save it off and
created an MS Word document of the article over lunch today. If it's needed
for the website or whatever, I'd be happy to send it...Of course I won't send
it anywhere without the paper's permission.

If we all did this, we'd be able to do a convincing cover version of
Magic Fly.
