This is not an easy note to write. It is indeed bitter sweet. Just in the past
week, we found a house that we really like and got a contract on it to buy
tonight. After getting flooded out nearly 1.5 years ago now, we are very, very
ready to get set up in a more livable space than the small apartment we have
been living in since last year's floods. I will have a much larger space for my
studio/workspace than I have ever had. I am so excited. I was not really
intending on buying right now, but life just deals out stuff and it all just
fell together in the past week. We will be moving into the house the week of
Different Skies. I will be needing to take that week's time to work on the house
and get moved in. I am very sorry to say that I will not be able to make it to
Different Skies 2011. I have been looking forward to that week since last year's
event ended, but, getting my own house with the perfect spaces for my family is
a life changing event. I will surely missing seeing the folks who are making it
out there this year and sharing time and music with them.

sincerely,

Tony Gerber

Me too, I'm afraid. I had to make an emergency run out to NY when
Shymala got sick, and I'll need the vacation I have to help her find a
new place and get moved in when she's well enough to go back. So no DS
for me this year. :(

Sunday, September 4, the Soundscapes Concert Series returns to the
Nazareth Center for the Arts with Modulator ESP of the UK.

Modulator Experimental Synthesis Project, a.k.a. Modulator ESP, performs
improvised music that explores the boundaries of dark ambient, drone,
Berlin School sequencing, and noise using modular synthesis, real-time
sampling, sound manipulation, and live looping. Eschewing playing along
to pre-programmed, structured backing tracks, Modulator ESP prefers
something a bit more freeform. This is the revelation he had upon
discovering bands like Arc, RMI, Redshift, Airsculpture, and Arcane who
were doing a retro-styled improvisational take on EM.

Modulator ESP has been described variously as "vintage synth overload to
propel you into the outer reaches of the cosmos" and "one man will
descend to (this) earth in a hail of analogue synth tones; called upon
from the singular consciousness of John Carpenter and Vangelis - like a
2046 dystopian dream with the optimism of Jean Michael Jarre and his
penguins."

Modulator ESP loves playing synths because of the electronic, synthetic,
other worldly nature of the sounds. This makes Ambient, Berlin School EM
the best style for his interests. He plans to stretch the boundaries by
incorporating some of his progressive influences.

Doors open at 7:30 pm and the concert is at 8:00 pm. The concert is
free. Donations are requested to support the musician and to enable the
Nazareth Center for the Arts to pay operating expenses. The NCA is
located at 30 Belvidere Street, Nazareth, PA 18064 just off of Route 191
on the southwest corner of Belvidere Street and South Spruce Street.
Check the NCA site for parking information.

The Soundscapes Concert Series is the concert companion to the Galactic
Travels radio program on WDIY-FM and to Thought Radio on WMUH-FM and
presents electronic music to the Lehigh Valley.

Good morning, DS'ers,

There are too many reasons to go into about why I absolutely CANNOT attend
DS'11.

I really mean CANNOT.

So I've decided to do something illogical.

Maybe even stupid.

I'm coming.

Allen, I'll mail you a check for, what was it? $465?

Anyway, please remind me of the amount and your address.

Rig this year will be ultra-micro, ultra-lightweight and mono:

• Teenage Engineering OP-1 w/USB charger
• Korg Kaossilator
• M-10MX mixer
• mono out, mono in cables for FOH mixer
• NO MIDI—so I'm already out of the sequencer numbers

I will buy 2 16-packs of AAs when I get there. No power supplies. Not green.
Tough.

If I get really energetic, I may bring my MacBook with KORE2.

But I'm keeping everything to one carry-on bag. Rig, clothes and a toothbrush.

Good thing, since flight restrictions are tough and luggage charges are pricey.

So my flight and car are booked, and I am ready to go. I'm getting to Phoenix at
7pm Saturday and can take one person. I'm leaving Monday, so I can take that
person or another back, too. No "crack of dawn" returns on Sunday.

Cheers from INDY—"I'm not dead yet!"

John, basically it's what I have on the DS page, minus Tony and Joe. But add
slate... I'm actually in Denver right now, and I get to experience Casa Metlay
tomorrow so I'm away from my files.

I will send out an updated GO list as soon as I get back

Hi folks, especially those attending this year,

DS 2011 starts in about four weeks and as we have less people on stage than in
previous years we all get to play more. It might be a good idea to get familiar
with some of the stuff we're going to play in advance, so here's what I have got
(so far):

<http://www.ozoneplayer.com/DS/>

What you will find there:

The Enemy Nest (from my latest release Long-range Influence, no charts yet)
The Birdman of Arcosanti (new piece - rough demo + charts)
Kiss Your Darlings (new piece - rough demo, no charts yet.)

Cheers,

Otso

I'd be happy to learn the bass part on any or all of these. I should be
able to get a reasonable facsimile of the "Kiss Your Darlings" sound
with fuzz & filter. But don't let me hog all the bass parts if other
people want them!

My pieces are here:

http://doubtfulpalace.com/ds2011

To those who wish to play on them:

"Nudging Space" is generated by simple instructions; if you want to do
some advance preparation, come up with three or four complexly modulated
sustaining patches, in the vein of the demo. We'll need some percussion
for the middle section as well, both boomy and clattery.

"The Appointed Hour" is another of my "spaghetti western" tunes. I'll
take the bass; we'll need melodists, harmonists, and a drummer. The
chart isn't perfectly accurate, but I think it's close enough to be helpful.

I think it would also be a good idea for people to come prepared with a
solo piece, maybe five minutes' worth or so. That way if we come up
short on group pieces we can fill out the set. It's not quite the DS
way, but hey...

Sounds like a good piece to use either of two soft synths starting in "A" - or
both! :-)

John, would you like to play the "combined arpeggio" part?

I'd like to have some variation and oh-so-yummy-out-of-tune flavor by doubling
every note. In the demo there are two sound sources for every note excluding the
bass line, the "combined arpeggio" piano part plus the "divided arpeggio" played
with three separate instruments with some detuning. That would take four
players. Then there is the bass part (Tim?) and the "birdy effects" (Slate?) and
the solo from the middle point (me…unless someone else desperately wants to play
the solo.) We could add some percussion, too.

Hi, guys,

I have, as usual, tons o' stuff. On my Soundcloud site there are three
favorites:

• Heat
• Hyperion, Mysterious Moon of Saturn
• Migration of the Last Mammoth

Check out http://soundcloud.com/shamaniaq-slate.

I recently bought Sibelius and could produce scores if you want them. I'd prefer
to prepare "roadmaps" and let you improvise, but then I'm pretty loose about
this
sort of thing. Everyone could play on any one of these and toss in drums, esp.
on "Migration". Also can retitle them, such as "Migration" --> "Last Shuttle".

;-)

We could also play longer individual pieces, trading off between several shorter
pieces.

Cheers!

Hi, Otso,

My audio-MIDI feedback performances are good at detuning and "birdy" trills &
riffs.

Might fit in well, as this has some very nice aleatoric sound, but I can dial it
in to be modest
or wild, you choose! Also can bring the softsynth & do just about anything.

Cheers!

I know you do a lot of live experiments, are you able to recreate the tones
pretty well?

roadmaps are fine Jonathan and they can be freeing and fun.

cheers,

Hi, guys,

I have, as usual, tons o' stuff. On my Soundcloud site there are three
favorites:

. Heat
. Hyperion, Mysterious Moon of Saturn
. Migration of the Last Mammoth

Check out http://soundcloud.com/shamaniaq-slate.

I recently bought Sibelius and could produce scores if you want them. I'd prefer
to prepare "roadmaps" and let you improvise, but then I'm pretty loose about
this
sort of thing. Everyone could play on any one of these and toss in drums, esp.
on "Migration". Also can retitle them, such as "Migration" --> "Last Shuttle".

;-)

We could also play longer individual pieces, trading off between several shorter
pieces.

Cheers!

Hi folks, especially those attending this year,

DS 2011 starts in about four weeks and as we have less people on stage than in
previous years we all get to play more. It might be a good idea to get familiar
with some of the stuff we're going to play in advance, so here's what I have got
(so far):

<http://www.ozoneplayer.com/DS/>

What you will find there:

The Enemy Nest (from my latest release Long-range Influence, no charts yet)
The Birdman of Arcosanti (new piece - rough demo + charts)
Kiss Your Darlings (new piece - rough demo, no charts yet.)

Cheers,

Otso

Sure! In 2009 I cut "Oncologia" from 15m to 5m, thus surprising Mike. Music is
fluid, especially
a space piece like Hyperion. It has a relatively simple trajectory. It also fits
in with this year's
space theme, and also has some great photos, like this one that inspired the
piece:

http://wanderingspace.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/hyperion.jpg

And then there is this stunning Cassini photo of Saturn:

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0610/newrings_cassini_big.jpg

Put these together and we have a song!

Ok, so I am back from a very lovely trip to Denver, where I was thrown headlong
into the chaos that is Casa Metlay.

First order of business, will be the updated GO LIST

Rus Foster
Dave Fulton
Allen Goodman
John Krikawa
Jonathan Mills
Otso Pakarinen
Giles Reaves
Tim Walters

Yes, you are reading that list correctly, we have a mere 8 individuals who will
be attending this year. I for one am not concerned at all, as we all are DS
Alumni, and excellent musicians in our own right. I am certain the music we
produce will be of the highest quality as it has been in previous years, so long
as Tim doesn't ask me to sing =)

Rus has completed the poster for this year, and I will be forwarding it to the
PR contact, as well as uploading it to the DS website in hte next couple of
days.

Sound:
I will be obtaining Doug's PA and mixer rig in the coming weeks, as Ivan can not
make it this year.

Visuals:
I am not really all that concerned with visuals this year, while they are
certainly nice to have, I don't feel they are a show buster if we don't have
any, or if they are nothing more than a WinAmp or iTunes visualizer that gets
projected. My MAIN concern is that we have good music.

That's pretty much it...

We're still on, and we're going full speed ahead, T-minus 25 days and counting

Cheers

Allen

Hello, group.

I finally got this stupid Yahoo group poop functioning.

Not sure how I will be configured this year. Could be big since there is plenty
of space. (Large Modular anyone?)

Or small... 2 iPads and a iPhone?

Or somewhere in-between.

An iphone connected to a small modular.

hmmmm....

Lasers?

Maybe we should all sing? Okay, maybe not...

I managed to coax the ever-so-buggy Cubase scoring section to produce something
resembling intelligible charts to the rest two of my pieces for this year.
They're here: <http://www.ozoneplayer.com/DS/> as well as the mp3s plus a text
file named "song notes" that contains a short description of the structure of
each piece and the instrumentation needed. Two of the three needs all eight of
us to participate - so pick your parts now if you want to be able to choose!
