I am currently in Subterranean Scumbarge Studio B, watching the good Dr. run
around like the proverbial beheaded chicken moving and sorting an enormous piles
of electronic junk while cursing to himself. When he momentarily looks at me
with his crazy eyes, and the eyebrow of doom and proclaims that the GO list
opens Sat April 15th at midnight your local time.

"Several things to remember," he said, "All requests to be on the go list, need
to be sent to Metlay@..., anyone who sends an "I'm in" message to the
Different Skies list will summarily be subjected to painful public humiliation."

"Second, if possible, please indicate your desire for lodging space either up
the hill down the hill or backstage."

"Third, please do not include any follow up questions concerning recent
discussion topics, as I am still getting back up to speed and will not be able
to address additional concerns in a timely manner." then Mike went on to say "I
would like to apologize for my silence in recent weeks. I will not bore you with
the circumstances that have kept me offline. I am hoping to be ramped up to full
speed by late May, after my two live concerts."

"I am in somewhat better shape then when I last wrote, and u thank you all for
your patience. I am hoping to help make Different Skies 2012 the best ever, and
I look forward to seeing you all there."

He then looked into the distance for a moment and quietly added, "Most of you
anyway..."

Good evening, DS'ers!

I have the permission of Jackson Scott Byam, one of my I400 Metaphor and
Programming students, to share this short but beautiful YouTube video with you.

Students in I400 do not have a background in music, so I teach a number of ways
to connect music and other artforms including programming as a metaphor to
explore and relate to the world around us. Improvisation, such as we have done
at Different Skies, plays an important role in music. In programming, it is
unabashed hacking! :)

All of the other students' videos and "mashups" were creative, too, but I know
many of you like space music and space imagery. In this case, NASA footage from
the international space station was set to Jackson's original music. Enjoy!

Cheers!

Thank you to everyone who wrote to me; I have made a bunch of phone
calls and have now whipped up a framework for how DS 2012 will be
working. It will in fact be different from any other year and I
appreciate the support for this new idea that has come from those involved.

If you belatedly change your mind and want to be considered for this
year, drop me a line. We don't have a wait list per se, but I will keep
you in mind if plans change.

Thanks,

mike

Well, I waited until yesterday, but I finally found a n iPad 3 64GB WiFi at my
local Target.  I bought it and a notebook case for it.  Now, I need to know what
I need to get it to talk MIDI with the rest of my studio.  I understand that the
camera USB adapter works with many physical MIDI controllers that have USB
connectors and that the IK Multimredia AmpliTube iRig connects others, and I
have ordered both.  However, I don't know what to attend to in the app store for
apps that support external MIDI devices.  I get the feeling the something called
"Core" is important, but I'm not sure in what sense.  My semester ends on Friday
and I have a lot of time after then to play around with this. I'd appreciate any
advice you iOS people can give me.

The apps are so cheap, I advice getting a bunch of them and seeing what suits
you best. To my surprise, of all synth apps I have on my iPad, a pretty basic
(but comprehensive enough) virtual analog synth called NLogSynth Pro has been
the most useful for me so far. (But only after Alesis fixed a bug in their iO
Dock firmware that caused stuck notes.)

Congrats on your new J2.... er.... iPad :)

I'm checking out Line6's Mobilizer, which has MIDI in and out.

As for synths, I'm toying around with the freebees and cheapees for now.

Since you already have a lot of midi I highly recommend Lemur. It comes with an
editor for Mac and pc and a daemon that will run in the background on your pc
which allows you to connect to the iPad via wifi. There are tons of control
surface templates you can use to get started.

The Lemur app on the iPad is lovely but the editor is somewhat awful.

(I don't want to say bad things about the Liine guys since they're nice folks
and are just up the road near Eberswaldestraße, but I think they inherited the
editor and it's, well, French. I keep meaning to knock up a
Clojure/Overtone-based template generator to replace it.)

Favorites of mine (and non-favorites):

Synths:
  - AniMoog is great. Supports external MIDI fine. Recommended.
  - MorphWiz is fun, no MIDI support. On the fence; it was one of the first
available and I probably wouldn't buy it now.
  - GarageBand for the iPad will give you a couple very, very nice electric
and acoustic pianos; haven't tried it with MIDI but I believe it does
accept it. Nice job of simulating touch sensitivity using the accelerometer.
  - Addictive Synth: pretty good. Good MIDI support, can do wireless MIDI
from other iOS devices. ROMpler with morphing filters.
  - Sunrizer: analog modeller. Quite like it. Solid MIDI support.
  - Filtatron: more a processor than a synth, but can sample and then
filter/semi-granulate them. No MIDI.
  - Epic Synth. Not epic. Don't find myself using it a lot. Very
primitive-sounding, though clean. No MIDI.
  - Alchemy: Pretty good. Another morpher with two X-Y pads. No MIDI.
  - iGenDyn: noisy toy. Not recommended.
  - B.machine: six Buddha machines. Fun.
  - Beatwave: Monome-ish. No MIDI support.
  - Phaedra: 4 32-step step sequencers. Have only played with it trying to
connect to other apps on the iPad, with mixed success. Not the easiest
programming interface. If it was programmable over MIDI it'd be awesome. If
you like this kind of thing, you might like it a lot. The new iPad should
have enough grunt to make it work; the original's not quite powerful enough
to run this and AniMoog together (glitches).

Controllers:
  - SoundPrism is okay but no MIDI; SoundPrism Pro has MIDI. So-so built in
sounds. You may or may not like it.
  - TouchOSC. OSC controller; lets you send OSC messages wirelessly to
anything that consumes them, so you can hook it into Max, Pd, Live, ...
Supports CoreMIDI and the MIDI Mobilizer. Have had mixed success with it,
but when it works it's totally amazing. Will be experimenting with the new
Live Lite to see how well that works.
  - Mugician: Think of it as a 12-string Stick-like instrument. Opaque in
the extreme until you get the hang of it (which I don't feel like I have
yet). Replaced by GeoSynth which looks like a better app.

That's what I've got so far; I haven't been tracking recent stuff (last 3-4
months) so there may be some nice new stuff I don't know about yet.

Actually, Alchemy does have both midi in and out. It can be very useful if you
have the full Alchemy synth on your computer.

interface here (as opposed to wherever my box of junk is in Arizona).
According to everything I read, since the interface has a no-driver mode, I
should work with the camera connection kit USB module which I'll be picking up
at Target later today.  I bought a handful of synths and control apps
(including two emulated analog sequencers) last night.  I also bought the $10
Fairlight CMI app,, however, it doesn't appear to function on an iPad 3.  Now,
this begs the question, how does one get a refund from the iTunes store?  It
seems that a few years back when I bought my iTouch, you could elect to
uninstall new programs, and iTunes would issue on-the-spot credit.  I see no
mechanism for that now.  So, if anybody
knows how to get a refund for an app that is incompatible, I'd appreciate
finding out about it.

John

Actually, Alchemy does have both midi in and out. It can be very useful if you
have the full Alchemy synth on your computer.

I've used a few midi USB adapters with the camera kit. What I've found is the
seem to work best if you connect them just after you unplug the iPad from the
charger or after a full power on/off. Some times your apps won't see them even
when they look to be power up. Connecting to powered hub seems to work too.

I've really wanted to check out iConnectMidi that looks to handle multiple
devices so you could build something like an iOS modular.

I was looking at that the other night, the thing that puzzles me is why things
that big don't include hi-current electrical supply to the iconnector.  It
seems pretty stupid that all of the MIDI solutions (except the Alesis box) seem
to require the iPad to run on battery power.  I haven't looked, but it seems
that there would be a market for an iDock connector pass through where the
passive connector supplies device power.
