Hi Chris,

What NPR space music show? Details, please.

Cheers,

It is called At the Edge on Wisconsin Public Radio. Just broadcast on
two affiliates in the Green Bay area. I am filling in for the usual
host when he wants to get away. He has been doing it for like 15
years and I am hoping he will want to retire at some point. It's so
hard to get a show, not like my college radio days when they would beg
you to do a show!!

Hey y'all:

Just checking. Anybody affected by the nasty weather that's been rolling
through the middle states Sunday and today? Hope everyone's OK.

Ah ha. So it's a WPR program and not an NPR program. The WPR stations
are obviously NPR member stations but the space music show is locally
originated and doesn't come from NPR. Had me going there for a minute!

Hey all:

Been collaborating with a Hindu chanting guy since December on a joint
chanting/ambient CD. The title is Hearts of Darkness. Very cinematic,
almost like a literal film soundtrack. Very spooky, but not too
creepy. It's based solely on the Kali element of Hindu goddess
worship. It's divided into two long-run sections(34 minutes
apiece)...like LPs from the old days. Some of it is actually quite
reminicent of old TD, if I do say so myself. Other parts remind me of
old Alan Parsons, too(Tales of Mystery & Imagination).

It's finally finished and ready for distribution, which will most
likely be through CDBaby and both of our personal websites. For any
interested parties in the DS room, I can make some 'special edition'
copies here at home and send them directly to you. If you want them
personally autogrphed by both of us, I can certainly arrange that as well.

Salud!

Sorry,

Don't know all the distinctions. Are you trying to get your show
nationally syndicated at NPR? I wish you could!!

I do, too, but I doubt that NPR would be interested in something so
small as spacemusic. It's covered under the New Age marketing umbrella
which already is tiny but *is* a known market quantity.

We aren't quite at that stage yet - still negociating key signatures
and tempos - but we're getting there.

With trusty P3 to hand - and it's proving to be fantastic as an
improvisational ideas generator, fed into an OasysPCI running a pile
of physical models, pitch-shifters and tempo-locked delays - I am
enjoying my new-found role as Sequenceman, Master of Time, otherwise
known as Doctor Clock. Bow before me, minions, or be forever out of

What do people on the list use for firewire recording interfaces? I currently
have a M-Audio 410 which is great for output but is pretty limited for
recording.

I'm looking to upgrade at the $700 - $1500 level and get at least 8 balanced
channels in and the ability to expand inputs using adat.

Right now I am looking at the Motu 828mkII or the M-Audio project mix. Seems
like the Motu is a better interface, but the control surface on the M-Audio
has appeal. Has anyone used the M-Audio Project mix. I've heard some reports
there is no trim pot for the inputs and no balanced ins and this frustrates
some and I think it would me too.

What can people on the list recomend for around $1k. My use would be for home
recording, some accoustic but mostly direct in from synths. I would like to
have all balanced inputs, but not required.

And on that note, Greg, Paul and I all elected to call out tempo
values and freewheel. :)

We're about to run through a complete technical rehearsal of the
completed sets, recording the results. Here goes, well, everything....

Thanks for the good wishes, all.

Whenever I look at interfaces, I'm generally most concerned about the
local mixing/cue mixing facilities. The MOTU's (at least up until the
brand new 1/2-rack unit, which I know nothing about) have good cue
mixing. Having looked at the Edirols and Presonus boxes, they seem to
almost but not quite do what I think's important.

For performing at DS and the like, I used the M-Audio Firewire 410. For
multitracking, I use the MOTU 896HD expanded with the Behringer ADA8000
for and additional 8 ins and outs. MOTU's QueMix rawks... almost. I've
requested that an addtional four busses be added to QueMix is the
hardware will support it. LaCie is IT for external Firewire hard drives.

Cheers,

Bill

I'm looking at the tiny MOTU, in an effort to shrink the traveling rig.
But I also noticed that there is a half-rack RME box, announced but
not shipping. I know several people who like the Fireface 800
sonically, and if the little one is similar, it might be worth a look.
RME claims to have the same kind of mixing flexibility that the MOTU
boxes have, but I don't know the details.

I just bought the RME Fireface 800. One reason for choosing it was that
it's got two ADAT inputs and outputs.

Brian,

I am currently using the RME Hammerfall HDSP 96/52 in the main
computer in my recording rig. It's a PCI card, and totally ADAT
interfaced, but from what I can tell, most of the current RME stuff
appears to be doing the same things (differing only by Host I/O and
audio I/O compliment), if not using the same final pathway
hardware. The Multiface DSP 24/96 is a small (1/2 rackspace?)
Firewire box that has all of the same features as the HDSP 96/52
(except it has 8 balanced analog in/out, and only 1 ADAT set, and
connects to the host via Firewire). The point is that it has all
of the firmware/software stuff that every other product in the RME
line appears to have. Apparently most important to Nick, it has
the Total Mix (720 channel/40 bit mixer) that is capable of doing
anything that you want with the sound path. It also has the HDSP
Meter Bridge, which is a pretty cool software meter bridge.
Anyway, it is all based on the Hammerfall HDSP technology and, I
can't believe there is anything out there that could provide the
sound and flexibility for the money. ZZounds is selling them for
about $650.

Good luck guys. Hope your evening of music is marked with minimal
technical glitches and maximum enjoyment. Looking forward to hearing
the results.

Nick: Are you thinking of using essentially the same setup for the
DS06 show? I have some sequences and rhythms I'd like to send from my
cpu, as long as I can fuse successfully with the master midi clock
source. Wanted to join in last year on some of the heavily sequenced
pieces, but had too many other musical issues to address at the time.
Been working with NI's Electronic Instruments suite, especially the
sampler/sequencer device...I think it's called Krypt. That thing is
quite wacked. But I managed to coax some truly wicked results from it.
Many of the patterns I created gently morph from one variation to
another over time, which means at least they're not completely static.
Sounds mechanical and organic simultaneously. Should be a pleasant
counterpart to the monster P3 patterns. Glad to hear that you've
managed to employ your P3 so impressively. With Nagle's certain
absence, I was wondering what alternatives we might have among the
remaining P3 enthusiasts. This definitely gives me renewed hope.
