Hi Everyone,

I just thought I'd ring in since it's just about a month away and
there hasn't been any traffic lately. I imagine it's due to everyone
working intensely on their music! ;-)

I'm going to be starting that myself (at least for the prewritten
stuff), and also need to buy a few more things beforehand. I've at
least been trying to keep my chops up lately. It's been a challenge
with everything else going on in life.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to next month. It's hard to believe it's
almost here. I'm also looking forward to meeting everyone (and re-
meeting a few of you) there.

Regards,
Dave

Yes, definitely getting close. My visual software is back together and has been
through one shakeout performance. Anyone with suggestions or visual assets
they'd like me to incorporate with their performance please get in touch with
me, I'm happy to accomodate you. Looking forward to a great experience.

I have an idea... how about a subliminal picture of Metlay behind everything,
with a message that says something like, "Thank Metlay, and come back
next year!"

Me too. I wonder if I have any album art I can send your way.

One thing I'd like to do, David, is subtle titling to introduce
artists entering or leaving the stage without disrupting the music.

*sigh* Doug, why are you so obsessed with giving away so much of the
credit you've rightfully earned for yourself? This event would have
happened in some form or another if I'd done it alone, but it will be
carried out with its solid logistical and marketing foundation
entirely due to your efforts. I do hope we have a chance to do this
next year and in subsequent years, but you deserve a great deal of
the kudos. Enough said on that (for now).

Having just completed my last set of really time-sunk commitments
before DS, I now have a month to get my part of Otso's set sorted,
finish working with my own set (Foxy, if you hoped to learn anything
from how I program my Nord, give up now :-\ ), and get travel
arrangements sorted out.

Some random notes as we head into final prep mode:

1. Those of you who have never been to this part of the USA, trust me
and bring or buy a bottle of SPF 45 sunscreen, a hat, and light but
skin-covering clothes. What the sun can do to you down here in one
unprotected half hour can look like something out of a science
fiction movie.

2. If you want to do swimming, pack swimsuits. Arcosanti has a very
nice pool. I don't know if they provide towels, I'll have to ask.

3. Almost as bad as the sun is the effect of high altitude and the
desert environment. Get used to drinking a lot of water and doing so
constantly; otherwise you'll wind up with unexplained splitting
headaches that aspirin won't cure. I plan to have one or more sport
bottles of water with me at all times the whole week. (This part of
Colorado isn't as bad as Arcosanti will be, and I easily drink two
liters of water a day in addition to normal meals and beverages.)

4. Who-all is bringing a HandSonic to the show? I know of at least
one. Could you loan one to Otso for his set so he doesn't have to
schlep it on the plane if he doesn't want to?

5. I believe everyone who's going has paid. Thanks to all for your support.

6. I will pack a couple of emergency items for the show, including a
spare keyboard and a couple of extra stands, van space permitting. I
will also probably bring a ton of extra cables. Will anyone have a
laptop with the Nord Editor 3 software on board? I'd rather not drag
my WallStreet if I don't have to.

There'll be more later; I'm recovering from a very long weekend trip
with the kids (we went to see Jesse Sola of Numina get married; quite
the shindig!)...

I salute you all and look forward to making horrific noises with you all.

on the subject of titles, I think I will have the time and ability to make nice
titles with band names and composition titles. Naturally, it will be helpful to
have show order defined in advance of the performance :-). Very helpful during
the performance will be having the Stage Manager inform video, audio, and
lighting when pieces will be ending, preferably with about 30 seconds warning,
it's really nice to get to black at the end of a song!

On the subject of images, yes please forward cover art, I may be able to
incorporate with your titles, or use it while you are playing.

On the subject of a Metlay image staring down from on high, bring it on, but
don't tell him!

I'll be happy to bring mine. Do you need the pedals too?

I hadn't heard from anyone the last time I broadcast things that I could
bring, so I wasn't planning to bring much. If we have an emergency, I
can drive down to Tucson and bring some stuff back. We could do
that when we do the KXCI run. And I'd have slave labor too! ;-)

> Will anyone have a laptop with the Nord Editor 3 software on board?

I've got a Dell Inspiron 7500 running win98se with the Nord software
and a midiman 2x2. (I'll be bringing it with me anyway...)

Well that would be absolutely great, thank you! That would make my
traveling much easier. Are you going to use it yourself there? I would
have to sysex dump my kits into it, I hope that doesn't cause a
logistical nightmare.

We're going to need at least a kick drum trigger pedal. Do you have it
mounted on a stand? (the HandSonic, not the pedal)

Hello All
I'm still alive and kicking, and still planning to come out and play! At
this time I'm planning to fly out alone (with two keyboards) and travel
light. That is, if I can get from Phoenix to Arocosanti - anyone still going
my way, and still have room? I'll need to book the flight this week, so I
really need to know what my options are asap. I'm hoping it's alright to
just plug in with someone else - I'll bring all the cables I might need.

No worries. At this point, I don't know whether I'll play or not, and if
I do, I can always do another sysex dump into it again. It doesn't
take very long, and I'll have my laptop already there. Say, do you
want to send me the sysex file? I can have it loaded up for you and
I'll store a backup copy on the laptop just in case...

Alrighty, I've got you covered...

Yes, it's on a stand, the blue one that looks like a V-Drum stand...

Somebody get this man a shuttle run from the Phoenix airport! I'd do it myself
but I am now dependent on Paul Vnuk's van for transport. (Speaking of which,
Foxy, gimme a call about your post-show travel plans; I need to work out with
Paul if you're coming back to denver in his van with us.)

Giles, it's great to hear from you... I was getting worried. :) I'll write you
about some details you may have missed, in private.

Giles,

Looks like Tim and I will probably be driving through Phoenix Monday
morning, and I bet we can strap you to the top of the van... ;-)

What time will you be getting to Phoenix? I could also pick you up
at the Tucson airport if that ends up being cheaper for you. If you
come in on Sunday to Tucson, I'm sure I could find space for you
at the house. (I think Tim has dibs on the sofa bed, but we'll work
something out...) :-)

The other option is that it's not that far from Arcosanti to the airport,
so I wouldn't mind driving down to get you if you come in later...

What kind of keyboards are you bringing?

It's good to see you'll be joining us! I'm in Phoenix, and would like to
help you out. However, Bill's already taken my spare bed, so you'd have to
take the couch or floor. And my car is just big enough for two people and
their gear, so I'd have to rent a larger vehicle. If you don't find a
better arrangement, you're quite welcome to stay at my place and go up and
back with Bill and I. And if you do stay with us, I hope you're not
allergic to cats. :-)

That would be very kind of you. I will also bring a laptop and can do
the sysex dump from there, although maybe as a safety measure I could
also send the file to you. I'll email you later.

What do you all want to do about the poster.

We can have it commerically printed. This was under $400.

I can send people digital copies and you could print it at kinkos or on
your own printer.

Let me know. I think I've made all the corrections.

Jeff, you still don't have the 2 PM show for Friday on there, and there may be

Apologies to the non-Americans on the roster for a very IN joke, but:

I just scored an old used copy of _Schoolhouse Rock Rocks_, and am somewhat
disappointed by some of the tracks. ("Conjunction Junction" turned out okay
and "I'm Just A Bill" has its moments, but whoever covered "No More Kings"
needs to die, unless it's Blind Melon, in which case it's too late.)

I have a sudden itch to choose a random Schoolhouse Rock song and do it for
the Different Skies audience.

Needless to say I have no time to transcribe, arrange, negotiate rights for,
or rehearse such a tune, but the idea was too silly not to pass along.

I'll shut up now.

I'm bringing my JP-8000 and my K-2000 - nything with a "thousand" in it's
name. Well, I'm not bringing my Kord SDD-2000 delays. I'm travelin' light
these days, but I may miss my PCM-70s! I'll check and see if it's cheaper to
fly into Tucson on Sunday. As it is, there's a cheap flight into Phoenix on
Monday morning (arriving around 8:50am). Keep watching this space for
further details.

BTW, I've really been getting into Reason lately, transfering my sample
library and generally playing around. Anyone else out there using it for
space music? or Deep Ambient? A little Deep Space Dub anyboday?

Esp. when you start using a midi controller to control the nobs and
such. I haven't figured out the sequencer yet, just have been playing
it live. Rebirth is good to if you just want the basics, a couple of
303's and an 808.

Paul Vnuk has already said you can borrow his Korg MS2000, and if you need my
K5000 I can probably help you. We'll probably talk about MST3000 at some
point, too.

Point thy browser at http://www.pamplemoussemusic.com and follow the links to
MP3 samples and the like. It's not "purist" space music, but I find it very
nice to chill to, and I believe that the vast majority of it is done in Reason
with augmentation by Native Instruments softsynths. I know for a fact it's all
hermetically sealed in code, having slept in the spare bedroom that serves as
Gareth's studio and seen his rig: a tiny old Evolution keyboard, a pair of
Yamaha monitors and power amp, and a horking huge Pentium with the side panels
off to keep it from overheating.

I should point out that my own experience with Reason has been limited but not
promising, and I hold out a lot of hope for Live mainly because I know so many
people who love it and have not yet done enough with it myself to get
discouraged. I hold up Gareth's music as an example that shows you CAN make
worthwhile music just in software, but I remain unconvinced that I could ever
do it. Pity; it would save me a lot on studio space and cash.

You know, that may work! It seems that the Strong Bad Techno song is quite
well known. I was at a party a while back where someone started singing it.
Then last month I was at Anime Expo waiting for an event to start, getting
bored and started doing the bass drum doo-doo-doo-doo. And all around me
people started performing the other parts with me. It was too bizzare! :-)

I keep forgetting to mention that I have a Roland XP-10 that I could bring
with me if someone needs an extra controller or synth. I know it doesn't
have very many zeros in the name, but it should be able to handle the job
well enough.

Hello everyone!
Just wanted to say I'm really looking forward to coming out there
to participate in what should a notable (at least!) moment in EM history. I do
need one favor.... I will be arriving in Phoenix from Philly on flight 167 at
12:13 Pm Monday Sept. 8th. If there is anyone that has access to a ride north I
would greatly appreciate it. I will probably only have two bags.
Thanks in advance! I suppose I could take a cab or something, but
the cost may be prohibitive. See you there!

Tim and I will be at the Phoenix airport at 10:30 AM or so getting Giles,
so maybe we could hang out and drink coffee and wait for you. If you
only have a couple bags, we should be able to fit in my van...

Mystery Science Theatre 3000??? Cool! ;-)

Hey, I've got an MS2000 that I can bring if it saves anyone travel space...

Speaking of the MS2K, I played around with the Alesis Ion. Nice
piece of work - I played a couple notes, held down the keys, switched
patches and the sound kept playing! I then played a couple more notes,
switched patches, played more notes... I had four different sounds going
at the same time just by holding keys and switching! Fun...

Michael Mage is using Reason as his main instrument. I've been messing
around with Reason myself, because it has that nice long reverb that ends
up feeding back on itself... :-) I still love having real knobs though...

Are the notes holding till the end of their envelopes, or just ignoring
the note off?

(The former is how it works on the Andromeda, which is the right way to
do it)

Handsonic? (maybe Otso and I could perform a "borrowed handsonic" duet?)
