I need a tentative show of hands of all likely participants for my
'15' piece...or at least of those who have expressed a strong
interest. Due to the fact that I want to keep my final surprise under
wraps until we converge at Arcosanti, I'll be sending out rough audio
excerpts via individual emails to the respective players instead
posting to the entire room. Should have something ready to send by the
week's end, hopefully.

Any info regarding accompanying visuals on da beeg video screen this
year? Are we just gonna have to get a satellite feed from the
Discovery Channel and try to edit out the commercials in real time? Or
is Giles going to have to work overtime to make a quick slideshow that
runs on endless loop? Or maybe we all should bring along some photos
of us from our childhoods and make it a true Kodak moment....

Anyone...?....Bueller?....

Rus,

Check out the participants list for Tim Thompson:

http://www.differentskies.com/ds2007participan.html

Search for Thompson on this list and you'll get a feel for what he has
planned.

Cool. Hadn't visited that page in quite a long time, and hadn't
noticed many posts about this issue in the recent past. Was wondering
if we had anything truly secured, or if someone had to step in just to
fill a void. Now I'm a lot more enthused about things ;) Apologies to
Mr. Thompson for the glaring oversight on my part. Looking forward
seeing his stuff.

All of the above minus the mixer, which we're still trying to figure
out how to get safely to Arcosanti since Ivan will need to ship it
and no one from the LA area is coming out this year. But we're
working on it.

I think Tim T is bringing a projector and Arcosanti will supply the
screen, Doug's Roland system is available as a backup... we're
actually in pretty good shape.

I am still recovering from the shellshock of August and will attempt
to jumpstart my creative autumn with two concerts this weekend,
tonight on stillstream and Monday afternoon on Second Life (1 PM SLT
which is Pacific time, so the European audience will have an evening
show). This will help to crystallize my gear plans and clear the
cobwebs so I can figure out what, if anything, I'll actually be
PLAYING at DS this year.

So why not just use Doug's setup? It's in state, it has a way of
getting to Arcosanti, there are no shipping charges, little to no chance
of damage during shipping.

Ok I'll go back to my stage-right corner now

BTW, have I expressed lately, just how freaking stoked I am?

Subject: New free ambient releases at Earth Mantra Netlabel
dburga01
Send Email Send Email

Just a quick note to let folks know that there are three new ambient
releases now available for free download/listening at Earth Mantra
Netlabel (www.earthmantra.com):

earman021 - Stephen Philips - Soliton
http://www.earthmantra.com/soliton
Stephen Philips' first release on Earth Mantra is a wonderful lush
ambient sound poem, that visits both dark and light ambient territory.
Despite the fact the music was performed live on StillStream.com, the
music is masterfully produced and the recording is pristine. We
recommend listening to this terrific piece in your favorite easy
chair, with darkened lights and headphones, to maximize the experience.

earman022 - Medicine Man - Cerulean
http://www.earthmantra.com/cerulean
Medicine Man is another artist new to Earth Mantra, and we're very
excited about his release. Cerulean is the chronicle of the Medicine
Man's last year in school. Although there is indeed a good deal of
dark ambient territory covered by this album, there is also a great
deal of other territory as well, including some exceptional light
ambient as well as more progressive forms.

earman023 - Palancar - Ambient Train Wreck Back Catalog Collection Nine
http://earthmantra.com/trainwreckbackcatalog9
Palancar returns to Earth Mantra with the ninth installment of his
Ambient Train Wreck Back Catalog series. All of the releases in this
series are from the rather large back catalog of ambient
improvisational performances ("Ambient Train Wrecks") that Palancar
has performed live on StillStream.com over the past several years.

All the releases are ambient and are well worth your time to download.
Like all releases on Earth Mantra, these are released under Creative
Commons. Since the music is free to anonymously download and enjoy,
there's no reason not to grab these releases and hear for yourself.

Cheers!

The problem with Doug's setup is that in an ideal world it needs to
be run by Doug, who has been there done that for several past shows
and if he can make it at all this year would like to play rather than
engineer. Ivan's setup is a whole package of gear he's comfortable
with and can get into play rapidly and effectively; we could
substitute Doug's mixer but it wouldn't be a comfy fit for Ivan. So I
prefer to have the Roland system as a backup rather than simply punt.

I need to know next year's dates whenever that is possible so I can feed
that information to Vic Rek. It seems that the Ricochet Gathering next
year will be in Romania in the late September or early October time
frame. The sooner I can block off the week for Different Skies, the
better chance I'll have of not having these two important events in my
yearly schedule be in conflict.

Last week I was at the Ricochet Gathering and the previous week I was on
my annual hiking trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We went to the Smoky
Mountains, too, this year. (Mind3Spiral was last April. DS will be my
last big trip of 2007. Brian and I are going to the Canyon and beyond
with a few extra days to spend than in previous years.)

The interview of Vic Rek on Polish TV that included me jamming with
Steve Jolliffe (formerly of Tangerine Dream) in the center square of
Wroclaw was unfortunately lost to us. Please don't let that happen with
any radio and TV coverage of DS. Record it yourselves, if possible, and
get a DVD from the TV station so Jim can archive it on the website.

Cheers,

I raise my hand and wave it about furiously a la Horshack. Please send
a link and not actual audio if at all possible. Even with DSL, large
files via email make whatever email program I use grab all processing
power of my computer. Don't understand why since downloading from a
link leaves plenty of cycles for multitasking. I gave up on Outlook
Express years ago but even Thunderbird ties up my computer.

Despite the CPU limits encountered using VIs with LE, I can't
complain even on my old 1.8 GHz iMac G5. I'm often printing tracks as
I record them, and then inactivating the VI Instrument track after
printing. I use Reason a lot because it's CPU friendly, but also
Velvet, Hybrid, Xpand, Kontakt, Absynth, Reaktor, B4, FM7, Cameleon
5000, and others.

There are no "problems" running any of these synths on LE (PT
v7.3.1cs3, 002r), you just can't run more than 4-5 at a time (which
just happens to coincide with my typical workflow!). Can't imagine
how much better things would be on even the current low end iMac!

Am I just lucky?

I've decided not to bring the iron lung, the 1/87-scale relief map of
the Gettysburg Battlefield, the VAX 11/750, the trebuchet, or my
Clydesdales. Consequently, I'll have enough luggage space for a bigger
mixer that has a pair of XLR balanced outs.

I purchased two TRS 1/4" meter cables and a two 1/4" female TRS to
XLR male widgets. That way I have the easily broken connection
close to me and can run XLR mic cable the rest of the way. This
seemed like the simplest and most foolproof solution to me.

Please see my earlier post (#8493) for details. I outlined two pieces
in my post. The first of the two, Dissolve, is the one in question. It
is now un-officially referred to as 'That Damn 15 Tune'. Or '15', for
short. Plus, it is primarily a guitar piece. So, be sure you have one
if you still wish to participate.

Next year's show is 80 to 90 percent likely to take place on
September 14-21, with the show on the night of the 20th. I am sorry
if this conflicts badly with Burning Man, but two late years in a row
and I'll be forced to bow out and let someone else run it, if not
cancel it entirely.

I have archives of the KAZ-TV appearance from last year, provided by
KAZ itself. Shouldn't be hard to get one this year too from their
archives. It might be harder to get the 2004 one, but I should ask.

I, on the other hand, will tentatively step in, recognizing that I'm
already working on Otso's piece and trying to write the one I want to
do live on KAZ-TV...

Brian

See my earlier post (#8493) for details regarding the song structure.
The tune you're looking for is tentatively titled 'Dissolve'. It's
primarily a guitar-based piece, but I've left room for the possibility
of an Ebow-type voice, or nicely processed sax.

As an offshoot of my original 15 idea, I've swerved into another song
idea that may be right up your alley. As I see it, the piece would be
suited for no more than two people, or a duo of sorts. It's a simple
7/8 form, with a slow meditative pace. A nice verby sax dialogue would
sit perfectly on top. I'll try to have something for you in audio form
before we meet at DS in October. You could probably play brilliantly
on it without ever hearing it first, but I bet it would be nice to be
familiar with it nonetheless.

Don't care about Burning Man. (Sorry.) Thanks for the dates. I've
asked Vic not to overlap RG with DS because I need to attend both events
fully.

Cheers,

Bill

Okay...okay! Don't get your panties in a wad ;) I'll see if I can
upload some audio to an FTP site or something similar. Then I can
forward a link on to you.

Cool. If you get in too deep and have to bow out, I'll forgive you :)

Wait a minute....aren't you also supposed to be the demented conductor
for my secondary proposed piece (a la The Magic Flute)? Don't spread
yourself too thin, now...
