Hi Dylan,
    I really like this rhythm also! Here is some info that I found on Yamama from various resources but I'm pretty sure this will lead to more confusion. The first one I posted said that Yamama is a Susu rhythm also called Mamaya but I only found that connection on one site. The other references are for just Yamama or Mamaya as seperate rhythms.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"YAMAMA - From the Susu ethnic group, also called “Mamayaâ€. The women of the village get together once a year to honor the female spirit of Yamama. On this occasion they will ask her for whatever they need for the coming year."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Originally a mask dance from the Samou region, now played at various occasions."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Yamama- Powerful dance rhythm of the Mandeis ethnic group of southwestern coastal Guinea."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The old Mandingo-dance Mamaya (Mamayah) was very populair in Guinea during the 1940 - 1960 period. Traditionally it was a very stately dance, that was performed in a club or a group where one was part of. Dressed in gouba's and embroded shirts, male and female dancers could express their beauty, while dancing in two circles (men in outer circle, women in inner circle). Dance-steps were made in a majestic way and a handkerchief or decorated stick was used as an attribute. The rhythm started with the singing of a Griot and/or music made with the Balafon, Bolon or Tama. Mamaya is traditionally without an echauffement."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Mamaya : a rhythm that deals with the perils of greed and jealousy."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Mamaya- Origin, Northeast Guinea ethnic group Malinke."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So now that you are probably more confused, I hope this helps???
Peace,
Dan E.
"Yamama is so ugly that she can't walk in the woods without some yelling "Bigfoot!"" Boooo, bad play on words :-p
Dylan wrote-
<Just wondering if anyone has got the cultural scoop on Yamama, one of my
favorite rhythms! I've heard that it is Susu rhythm from the coastal
region of Guinea. I've heard two different descriptions as to why it is
played: 1) mask dance done with movements simulating the removal of
chaff from grains, rice, etc. 2) A rhythm played where women get
together to honor the spirit of "Yamama" and ask for blessings in the
coming year (i.e. good harvest, fertility, etc.).
any and all info will be appreciated!>
What does your Yamama sound like? I played what our Guinean teacher said was Yamama for the first time last week. The djembe accompaniments were really really difficult and exhausting, I was on the duns, but I can't imagine what we were playing could possibly be a stately dance, so just wondering if it is similar to the one you are referring to? It does get so confusing!
Cheers Molly
Further to my last post - Pretty sure the Mamaya is stately cos it's a slow one, I think Yamama is a different rhythm altogether and it is fast. But still not sure on origins.
I will keep searching, I am very curious!
Hi all,
Thanks for the posts on Yamama!!! I am pretty sure that the Susu Yamama is NOT the Malinke Mamaya and they should not be confused. I originally learned Yamama from Michael Markus but have lost some of the detail due to my poor memory!!! doh! bad djembe student!!!
For a good example of Yamama that I am talking about please refer to the following link: http://tinyurl.com/895c4nj. Still not sure what the purpose of Yamama is. Seems to either be an agricultural rhythm or a rhythm played to ask for blessings in the coming year.
Amina,
Dylan
Here some info about Yamama from Fara Tolno's instructional DVD:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEPi3Unnq_g
And, yes, the Susu Yamama is nothing like the Mamaya of the Malinke people. Mamaya is a circle dance from northeast Guinea with a completely different feel to Yamama, which is a mask dance. Neither Yamama nor Mamaya are agricultural rhythms.
Cheers,
Michi.
From the "The Rhythm Reference Project" by Fara Tolno http://www.rhythmreference.com
Yamama comes from the Temine people.  It was traditionally a masked dance, played once a year as a ceremonial offering for better crops, prosperity and other good luck upon the village.
Hello Fellow Drummers,
At long last, the recording project I put on hold while caring for my Dad's passing is now in it's final stages of production. I have poured my heart, my light,  my soul into this project, and I hope you will find the music a true gift. It also resonates from my recent successful trip to Bahia Brazil, an incredible journey with twelve students hosted by the inspirational Brazilian choreographer/dancer Rosangela Silvestre.
So, I invite you all to....
Come celebrate the return of the Sun at Ellen Clegg 's CD Release Concert "This Time" with OffBeat Womyn's Drumming Ensemble Saturday Decemeber 17th at 7:30pm at the Arts Block in Greenfield MA.  Inspirational, energizing drumming and dancing, uplifting sounds of the steel drum, and soothing melodic marimba. Sliding scale $15 - $5.  To purchase tickets in advance, or for more information, visit www.foundsounds.com  or call 413-824-8813.
Born with music in her blood, Ellen Clegg has been immersed in drumming and rhythm since the age of five. Her thirty year journey has involved extensive training including Oberlin College and traditional drummers in rhythmic traditions from across the globe; djembe from West Africa, steel drum from Trinidad, multiple percussion from Bahia Brazil, taiko from Japan, doumbek from the Middle East, and drum set, timpani, and marimba from US and Ghana.
Director of  FOUND SOUNDS, Ellen unites her passion and skills as a percussionist, performer, and educator to facilitate drumming classes, workshops, community rhythm events, and wellness programs throughout New England.  She believes in the ever-present power of rhythm and drumming to promote health, build community, and find strength in differences.   She has recently traveled to Brazil to continue her studies and currently is studying with Master Drummer Valerie Naranjo (2008 World Percussionist of the Year) in NYC. Her latest recording, Under the Piano, is a collection of original music that celebrates the melodic potential of drumming and rhythm. Influenced by myriad teachers from powerful music traditions, it sings with universal rhythms and inspired personal experience.
OffBeat performs inspiring rhythms influenced by the great traditions of Brazil and Yoruba, and by the evolving creativity of our drummers and compositions of the Director Ellen Clegg. Named for our unique character and sense of humor, we hope to create an inclusive, celebratory environment with each performance.
Fresh from studies in Brazil, OffBeat brings a depth of musical inspiration which arises from personal experience in Bahia: the Land of the Drum. There we have established a 'sister' relationship with the samba band Dida, studying with their most talented drummers. We also had personal instruction from the drummers of Bale Folclorico da Bahia, as well as movement and cultural studies with world-renowned choreographer Rosangela Silvestre. Come share in the joy, creativity, and exhilaration of rhythm which resonates in every heart.
Ellen Clegg
Hey All -
I have several very nice Jembe drums available for sale, with more to follow.
I have been building just a few each year, to keep my hands in the craft, and
for the interest and amazement of seeing and hearing how they turn out. But,
like a new litter of pups, you may love them all, but can't possibly keep them.
So I have one new Guinea drum and one re-conditioned Mali drum available now,
and 2 more shells,(also Lenge, carved in Guinea), ready to be built up.
I price them well below "market" because I'm mainly interested in covering my
cost and procuring a few more shells to keep the process going.
Sales within the Northern New England region would be easiest, but there's
always the UPS option where greater distance is involved.
You can see the drums at my band website:   ARABALON.com
Hello Group,
Drum Jam Events are looking for apprentices to join our Facilitator
Apprenticeship Program.
The program will train between 1 and 3 apprentice's to run our Rhythm Based
Events for Education, Community and Corporate Groups.
Do you know anyone who would be interested? Please forward this email onto them?
An initial selection process will take place during our Spring Community
Drumming Group. Which takes place on Tuesday evenings in Central Finchley. After
which we will choose between 1 to 3 apprentices to take part in the Free
Training Program over a period of around 6 months.
We need all potential Apprentices to attend at least 4 Tuesday night sessions in
Finchley in order to be considered.
If you are selected to take part in the training program, you will be offered
paid work when it arises. Therefore this program would suit musicians who are
already working as self-employed, and are looking for some extra income to their
already current projects.
If you have some experience of rhythm based events or are able to play
percussion and looking to further your career prospects this Training Program
could be for you.
Please let us know by emailing your CV and contact details to info@...
Many Thanks
Drum Jam Events Team
,Hi,
Let me introduce our concert held in Kagoshima, Japan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF7jQ6Rh5FE
After the tsunami and the nuclear accidents, we are working hard to
come up with alternative ways of generating power.
The djembe concert tries to show the effectiveness of Small Hydroelectric Generation.
All the LED lights used there were generated by a small pump set in the side of a small piece
of vegetable garden.
When I travelled to a village Sigiri in Guinea, I was amazed by the wonderful concert
lit by a few small halogen lights. Our concert is  inspired by it¡Ä
Unexpectedly I am in S. Florida for at least a couple of months. I am on the east coast between Ft. Lauderdale and W. Palm Beach. Formerly I played for dance classes in Hollywood that no longer seem to exist. I am looking for opportunities to drum while I am here. Anyone want to meet at Quiet Waters or another park if you cannot recommend other venues?
Hey Bev!
Greetings from a recent Florida transplant to Colorado!! Hope all is great with you!
Check out Shannon's site - http://www.drumcircles.net - if you can't find someone on there, he's on the other coast in the Tampa Bay area of FL; he may know of someone...
If that doesn't work, get in touch with me and I'll put more feelers out!
