West African drumming in the village style of Guinea and Mali, taught by Baba Abubakr Kouyate, a master drummer with over 40 years of experience.
Authentic djembe rhythms require six drummers, all playing different parts. Besides the djembes (large, wineglass-shaped hand drums), each rhythm requires the three dunnuns, large drums that are played with sticks. Dunnuns define the rhythm. Djembes accompany them.
In class we quickly learn several parts for each rhythm. Everyone plays all the types of drums. We also learn universal drum parts that can be played in--and will dazzle--any drum circle.
This Yahoo group is mainly for Baba Abubakr's djembe classes on Thursday evenings at Temples Gate in the Heights and on Saturdays at noon at Bara-Hambright Studio in the Spring area
