Spoons Café hosts Drums Not Guns Performance and Community Drum Circle
McKinney, TX - On Saturday, May 10th from 6PM -9PM Spoons Café, on the square in downtown McKinney, will host Drums not Guns, a local community service group, in an exciting display of drumming and community participation. In conjunction with the regularly scheduled Art Walk in downtown McKinney, Drums Not Guns will be performing a solid set of African rhythms and inviting the community to join in.
Michael Kenny, MMT, MT-BC, Drums Not Guns newly elected Board president said “We have been working hard to establish a drum and dance community here in McKinney with workshops, and an Annual Soli Drum & Dance Festival at Old Settler’s Park which was launched in 2006. There are a number of young people benefiting from the sense of accomplishment and the simple thrill of making people dance that comes from learning West African drumming. The positive results will be evident when we perform at Spoons Café!”
Spoons Café has recently moved to the corner of N. Kentucky St. and E. Louisiana St.; right on the square and is an active leader in building excitement in downtown McKinney. Karen Klassen, the owner of Spoons Café and McKinney native said, “McKinney’s rich heritage is reflected on the square. Our community is diverse in many ways, but the small town charm and hospitality I remember as a child has not been lost, even as our city continues to grow at a very rapid pace. This event showcases just one of the many great programs that benefit the youth of our city.”
The event will include some red hot drumming and extra drums and rhythm instruments that Drums Not Guns will have available for people to join in on the excitement. People of all ages and skill levels are invited to join. “I’m hoping we’ll see people dancing all over the square. It’s hard not to start dancing when the drumming kicks in.” said Randy Harp of Drums Not Guns. Randy has been conducting weekly drum workshops at Old Settler’s Recreation Center and has seen young people really growing in their performance skills. Some of the young workshop participants will also be performing on May 10th.
Drums Not Guns has recently reorganized to include a newly engaged Board of Directors whose focus is to expand the work of Drums Not Guns in North Texas, Our goal is to provide young people and our community through the power of percussion with creative ways to channel negative energy...diffuse anger…build team spirit, self-worth and self-esteem in support of peace and non-violence.
Spoons Café: - established in 2003, is a perfect balance of small town charm and good home cooked fair. Set in a 1920’s historic building designed with an eclectic touch to create a family friendly atmosphere where you can come in and hang out with a cup of coffee, breakfast, or stop in for a hot or cold lunch and even have dinner on Friday or Saturday night. Friendly wait staff add to the warmth as they invite you in as part of the family. While you eat you may even get to watch one of our pastry chefs decorating a cake.
Our in-house bakery is ready to meet your event needs as well. From an assortment of homemade pies to cakes, our pastry chefs can make your special day even better.
If you are looking for the goodness of home cooking, but don’t have the time. Spoons Café also offers their menu items to go. Just call ahead and we will have your order waiting for you. Or, choose from our selection of prepackaged items prepared daily so you don’t even have to plan ahead. Open Sunday thru Thursday for breakfast and lunch, Friday and Saturday for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
