Hi Everyone,
I know this site doesn't get much traffic anymore, with the official
site being so much more comprehensive and visible, but anyone who
stumbles upon this site shouldn't miss out on the excellent fan
photos that have been posted here that aren't available for viewing
anywhere else (at least that I am aware of). I just thought I'd
mention that.
Karman
I remember when in Germany stationed in Wurzburg, a buddy and myself
played on AFN on the Jeff Philo show. His radio show was called
the "Morning Mouth" and he said he was a good friend of Don's
earlier on as he was a roomate of his.We were called "Shoe and Pope"
and Jeff told us our music reminded him of some of Don's earlier
stuff. We played live Thanksgiving day and it was truly an experience
I will never forget.I wonder how Jeff is doing now and would like to
get to a Don Mclean concert if he is going to be in my area.
Best Regards,
Wolfman

I recently asked Alan if he would bring back the chat room on his
site - this one gives us SOOO many problems. I also think that
having it based on his site will bring in a lot more people to chat.
So, from now on, our weekly chats will take place in that chat room.
Although they're "officially" on Saturdays, I'll usually be there on
Sundays at the same time, too. I hope to see all of you there!
Karman and Martin, do you notice that our Club's (now Group's) first
anniversay will coincide with the date of release of Don's children's
album? Can we celebrate the double event somehow? Martin, how about
some of your wonderful graphics?

So sorry to hear about Marga Sanz, Bob, esp. since you told me about
10 days ago that she was doing okay. Oh well, the result of a heart
operation can be so unpredictable, and she was so young! As you say,
may she rest in peace!
Fuzzy
I am very sad to report that little Marga Sanz lost her fight against
heart disease today Thurs April 25th . To everybody who helped
thankyou - may this little angel rest in peace .

Hi and welcome, Jim! OK, here's the deal... We have our own little
message board and a guitar forum for all you geetar nerds (the URLs
are in the welcome message). We post there (our standards are a
little more relaxed than the "main page's" message board - we don't
mind a tangent or two here and there) and we also talk to each other
via Yahoo Messenger when we're online (takes about 5 minutes to
download) - look for me under the name karmanakasmartepants and I'll
hook you up with everybody else. We also have chat sessions in the
chat room on this page every Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 4:00pm
Eastern US time, until whenever. I hope to see you soon - we get to
know each other pretty well here and some very good friendships have
been formed. We're always happy to add a new member to the "gang."
New AP site - Verse 4 revision

To Anyone Interested,
I think I cleared this verse up (or as clear as it's going to get):

...and now I'll shut up.

Nice page Jim, a very well written and thought provoking
interpretation. I guess no one will ever really know the definitive
meaning behind those lyrics (unless Don finally speaks or puts it in
print) but your analysis is one of the best I have read.
re: 'the marching band', it was widely interpreted throught the years
as referring to the Vietnam war, that despite all that went on, the
horrors of that conflict just continued relentlessly. It was
interesting to see a different 'take' on that.

Thanks, Pouncer. The marching band certainly resonates, doesn't it?

Thank you, Jim. That must have been the product of much thinking and
knowledge of the socio-political background of the time.
However, the significance of the 'players' and the allusion to The
Byrds still bother me. Amidst all the other references, i.e. to
drugs, war, protest movements etc., could the stanza also be talking
about the rivalry between musicians who simply played their
instruments and sing (players) without relying on synthesizers and
other electronic effects and those who introduced these effects into
their music, such as The Byrds and The Beatles in their "Sergeant
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"?

Jim, thanks for your new site, which is really gorgeous!!
Definitely the first really thoughtful interp. I've seen. I like it.
I also liked the So Long Hopalong Cassidy link with Bye Bye MAP,
which I'd never considered before.
Just a really great site! Well done!
PS. Fuzzy, your discussion of the fourth verse is really interesting.
I like your point about the conflict between the "players" (I hadn't
thought of players in that sense) and the "sergeants". It seems more
logical than a couple of AP interps I've seen that basically say that
Don is (supposedly) blaming the Beatles, with that WONDERFUL album,
for the demise of danceable music (hello? the waltzy bit in "Being
For The Benefit Of Mr Kite", the catchy "When I'm 64" which just
MAKES you bounce along, ditto with "A Little Help From My Friends"
~aw Ringo~, the mesmerising Indian sounds of "Within You, Without
You"... rant rant rant!). It's such a daft interpretation especially
when you consider that Don said he wrote the AP album with the same
magnificent album in mind (at least I'm almost sure it was this album-
- odd little bits of his music remind me hugely of the White Album,
which I suppose isn't surprising considering that that album has
EVERYthing...)!
Was on earth was I talking about again?

Hi Fuzzy. I know that the electronics was a big issue with Dylan's
old school fans when he introduced them into his music in sixty-five,
but I'm not sure where this issue comes up in verse four.
Certainly "Eight Miles High" is full of electric guitars. Maybe I
missed it. Where do you see it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by Fuzzy on February 10, 2002, 4:23 pm , in reply to "Re: New
AP site - Verse 4 revision"
Jim, I don't see it explicitly stated, but I'd been wondering for a
long time what 'players' refer to and why there seems to be a match
or tussle between them and the other team (to take Don's football
image). This other team is not just the Beatles, because "the players
tried for a forward pass" before the Beatles were referred to.
I then thought: What was it that the early Byrds songs have in common
with "Sergeant Pepper" ? -- and the electronics and other effects
came to mind. It's the word 'players' that made me think of people
who simply play their musical instruments without benefit of
technology. It seems to be Players vs Marching Band. Weren't the
Byrds and the Beatles both bands rather than individual performers?
But why 'marching'? I can't answer that. Nor can I understand
why "the birds/Byrds flew off WITH a fallout shelter." Why WITH?
Sarahjane, I do share your enthusiasm for the "Sergeant Pepper"
album. I didn't like the Beatles until I heard that album. And though
I'd only got to know the Byrds music after listening to "American
Pie" just over a year ago, I've come to LOVE their "Tambourine
Man", "Turn, Turn" and "Eight Miles High", as well as "So You Want to
be a Rock and Roll Star?"

You mean I've been singing it wrong all this time? WAHHH!!! I always
thought he was singing "The birds/Byrds flew off FOR the fallout
shelter" - it does sound kind of like he's saying "with," but since
that didn't make much sense to me, I just substituted my own
preposition that DID make more sense, I guess. Hmmmm... So, they took
the fallout shelter with them? Eight miles high, then dropped it?
Gee, I'm really getting confused now!
The marching band reference seems to tie in to the sergeants
reference, to me. Both military-sounding - so, maybe the marching
band could be another reference to the Beatles, around the time of
Sergeant Pepper.
This is why I've NEVER let myself (until now - it's all YOUR fault,
Jim) get sucked into trying to analyze this damned song! I'm crazy
enough already without making things any worse by tormenting myself
this way!

Oh yeah, now THAT'S a song that lends itself to some VERY interesting
interpretations... Hey, Donny, if you're reading this, resurrect it
into your repertoire once in a while for us die-hards, OK?
Pleeeeeease? It's the first song I ever heard him perform live and I
was hooked from that monment on...

I'll take the easy one for now, Fuzzy: the marching band is the
Beatles because they all wear marching band uniforms on the cover
of "Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band."
As for the rest...it's late, and this song is starting to make my
head hurt. Maybe I can think of something later.

Ah, the classics...
Karman & Martin, how do we get to the message board? Every time I
tried in the last few hours, I was asked for a user name and password,
and it won't accept my yahoo ones.
Are the board rules being changed for some reason?
Look at Martin's BEAUTIFUL new HTML artwork on here on the main page -
isn't it LOVELY? He put DAYS into this - and it's WONDERFUL. The
links all work, too - I tried them out. I'm SO glad I made him a co-
founder, so he can make this group as pretty as his gorgeous
websites!!! Time to embarrass Martin, everybody and post about how
beautiful it looks and what a genius he is!!! Welcome to our new
GROUP, too, by the way!!! Try to show up for chat sometime, too, OK,
people?
What awful news! Oh, Bob, we're with you in
spirit and I know we all hope he gets better as soon as
possible. I have the same group of people praying for him
that I had praying for YOU and THAT worked, so... I
don't know what else to say except that I'll be
thinking of you and praying for your whole family. Take
care, OK?
Bob has asked me to post some devastating news,
so that you can offer your prayers.<br><br>His
youngest son is in a critical condition in hospital,
having been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer. He is
concious but running a 40.5 degree temperature and his
condition is very, very serious.<br><br>He is to be

his chances are rated as 1 in 4.<br><br>Please,
please share in my prayers for Bob's little boy, who I

I have added in Karman's Miscellaneous Don
Pictures, a picture of the album cover of Scott Fagan's
1968 SOUTH ATLANTIC BLUES, where he sings "The
Carnival is Ended" (covered by Don in Favorites and
Rarities).
Thank you for the explanation, Martin. Sorry to complain so much.
<br><br>Indeed, their ads are weird!! Either they incite us to gamble or treat
us to a list of unsavoury symptoms!

their message boards offline for about 12 hours to do
some maintainance, resulting in the annoying page not
found messages :) Sylvia and Cookie posted just before
the off line period started.<br><br>By the way, what

At last, at the witching hour of midnight

things are so puzzling!
I tried to access our message board at different

I found a really interesting photo on the
internet of Tony Migliore, the pianist in Don's band. The
caption said President Jimmy Carter, so it must have been
taken between 1977-1980 (correct me American friends if
I'm wrong). Tony looked so young and handsome in that
photo (he still looks good now!) that I thought I'd
share this with you all.
Hi Everybody - I want to remind everybody about
our weekly chats on Saturday and Sunday starting at
4:00pm East Coast U.S. time/9:00pm UK time (8:00am
Sydney time, the next day), until the last person drops,
usually about 5 hours later. If you come in and nobody is
there, just wait a while, someone will show up. I try to
be there the whole time, if I can, so you can always
at least find me (I try). Also, it's a good idea to
download Yahoo Messenger, if you don't have it, because we
use that as a back-up if this chat room doesn't work
right, which sometimes happens. There are times when
there may be only me in this chat room, but if you come
in, I can hook you up with 4 or 5 of us chatting on
Yahoo because this chat room can be is screwing up. You
never know...<br><br>I'd like to get an extra-good turn
out this week, plus some people who don't usually
remember to show up (then, of course, they'll make it a
habit - hee hee). See if you can fit it in to your busy
weekend, OK? Hope to see you there!
