Thought I'd drop a line to mention that I recently
bought Nitin Sawhney's new album, Human.
The first Sawhney album I bought was Beyond Skin
and was in the Jazz section and reasonably so, though
other stores put him in 'Dance'. His previous albums
did have a drum and bass type influence but I
hardly classify his music as Dance.
Anyway, Human is more pop oriented, despite pop being
a category I avoid almost as much as rap et al, I
find this an attractive album. The Indian elements
are as strong as ever, it being an excellent fusion
of Indian and Western styles and elements. Despite
Natacha Atlas singing on one track and another sounding
very like 'Only You' a hit in the UK for Yazoo and
the Flying Pickets, I doubt it will yield a hit single,
which is good, something like that could ruin a fine
musician.
A fine album.
Also, I was recommended an album by Paban Das, the
only one I found was Real Sugar which he made with
Sam Mills. It's 'OK' but short of the enthusiasm
expressed. There has been another, Gravitation, which
might be the one intended. Anyone know of it?
A.
